OnePlus 3 and 3T receive Android Oreo

OnePlus 3T Android flagship gets Android O
OnePlus 3T
Only a few days before the release of the OnePlus 5T with Nougat onboard, the OnePlus 3 and 3T flagships receive their last major software update. This Android Oreo-based update for them comes as OxygenOS 5.0.

In just a few days, those who will buy the new OnePlus 5T will find themselves in an awkward situation, since the older OnePlus 3 and 3T will run on Android Oreo-based firmware, while their handsets will only use Android Nougat. Obviously, this will not last for too long, since this is the last major software update for the OnePlus 3 and 3T.

The OxygenOS 5.0 release has been announced yesterday as the first official Android O OTA update for the OnePlus 3 and 3T. In addition to the Android 8.0 Oreo core, these are the changes highlighted in OnePlus' announcement:

  • Parallel apps
  • Picture-in-Picture mode
  • Auto-fill and smart text selection
  • Redesigned Quick Settings
  • Launcher - redesigned app folder, can now upload photos directly to Shot on OnePlus, added notification dots

At last, those worried about keeping their handsets safe from threats should know that the security patch that comes with OxygenOS 5.0 is dated September 2017. As usual, the update rolls out in stages, so it might take a while for it until it reaches all compatible OnePlus handsets.

OnePlus recently promised that OnePlus 5 and 5T users will also get Android Oreo soon. The OnePlus 5 is expected to get the first beta by the end of November, while its younger sibling should follow in December. The stable Oreo-based firmware for them should become available in early 2018, but we cannot talk about its accurate launch date yet.
