The 3Qi hybrid display will have three modes a black-and-white mode, full-color mode, and an e-paper mode
Pixel Qi, the company which had been at the fore front of the OLPC program and is known for its low power and low cost displays, has recently been in news because of a new display named the 3Qi. The 3Qi is a unique hybrid display to be used in netbooks that can operate in three different modes:
· A full-color, bright, conventional LCD mode
· A very low-power, sunlight-readable, reflective e-paper mode
· A low-power, basic color transflective mode.
The screens will initially be available in 7.5-inches and 10.5-inches. It combines the benefits of high-speed and full-color traditional LCD plus the low-power and reader-friendly qualities of electronic ink displays. According to latest pictures posted by the founder of Pixel Qi on her own blog, we can see that one can easily read from the display in the two modes i.e. full color mode with its backlight on black-and-white electronic paper mode with its backlight off.
Another good thing about these displays is that they also have a mode that enables the user to read in the sunlight which is a good thing to have in a netbook because most of the users use it when they are outdoors and on the move. These screens are expected to be launched by this year end.
