New low power GPU for notebooks

S3 Graphics today announced its Chrome 400 ULP (Ultra Low Power) graphics processor series, based "on the most power-efficient GPU architecture on today’s market" (according to S3). It should enable the users to enjoy the latest HD media playback and offer support for DirectX 10.1 gaming on mini-notes as well as notebook PCs (but don't expect a high performance). Ultra mobile devices need to be very light and thin, so manufacturers have been unable to integrate discrete graphics up to now largely due to the required cooling apparatus. Using less than 7 watts, the S3 Graphics Chrome 400 ULP series graphics processors should produce significantly less heat than its competitors, enabling the integration of dedicated graphics into mini-note PCs.

Three different models will be available. The Chrome 430 ULP which is the most energy efficient, the Chrome 435 ULP which offers a power boost and the top of the line - the Chrome 440 ULP with support for 1080p media playback including dual-stream Blu-Ray video playback.
