I am sure that all of you must have heard about notebooks/netbooks being subsidized by internet/telephone carriers like AT&T. Sprint, Verizon, etc. in return for the user signing a one or two year contract with the carrier whereby the user promises to pay a fixed amount of rent per month for the services of the carrier and in return gets a huge discount on the market price of a particular laptop model.

We had slowly become used to seeing telephone/wireless/internet carriers subsidizing laptops like HP Mini, Asus Eee PC, etc. Now, the Samsung Go N310 netbook has also been subsidized but this time it's not a wireless carrier, it's the New York Times which is one of the leading dailies (newspaper). Anyone who buys a one-year subscription of the Times Reader will be entitled for a $100 rebate on the Samsung Go N310 netook.

TimesReader is a desktop application for reading the New York Times online. The latest version of this software v2.0 happens to be built on Adobe Air which runs well on Windows, Mac, and Linux. When you load the Times Reader you will see a list of articles on the front page which can be then clicked to read the full text and any pictures. The software is quite effective and it feels as if the person is actually reading a newspaper.

This netbook will be offered through J&R music and computer world until March. The Samsung Go N310 is priced at $420 while J&R is offering this netbook for $379 and if you decide to subscribe to the Times Reader then you will get a $100 rebate which means that the Samsung Go will cost you around $279 mark. The main specifications of the Samsung Go are as follows:

  • 1.6Ghz Intel Atom N270
  • Intel GMA950
  • 1GB RAM
  • 160GB HDD
  • 10.1-inch 1024x600 pixel display
  • Ethernet, Bluetooth v2.0, WiFi  802.11b/g/n, 3G support
  • 1.3MP webcam
  • 3 USB ports, Audio in/out port, VGA port
  • Card Slot

Although the netbook is available for $279 but users would still have to shell out $179 for a one-year subscription contract of Times Reader. So the netbook will cost the user $458 which is quite too expensive.
