Dell commits to greener laptops
Dell is shifting all laptops to LED backlighting
Dell plans to change its laptop displays to LED backlighting. LED screens use less power than traditional laptop screens and more importantly, they don’t contain mercury, a bio-accumulator that has serious health side effects if ingested. This also makes them easier to recycle.
Dell estimates that by 2009 it can get 80 per cent of its laptops using LED screens and the whole transition is expected to be completed by 2010. Dell says its 15-inch displays will consume an average of 43% less power which will extend laptops battery life, nearly doubling it. The weight will also be reduced.
