The Latitude 13 is now available on Dell's US and UK websites, starting from $559 (£329)

Dell has just launched its latest addition to the Latitude series of business notebooks, the Latitude 13. The 13.3” notebook is available on Dell's US and UK websites and it starts at $559 and £329. The entry-level model is equipped with a 1.3GHz Intel Celeron M 743 ULV processor, which is ranked 281 in our CPU benchmark list. All models in the Latitude 13 range are based upon Intel's Mobile GM45 Express chipset with an ICH9M configuration and feature Intel's GMA 4500MHD GPU. The 4500MHD is only ranked 169 in our GPU benchmark list and you can find out more about it here.

The entry-level model's rather modest performance potential can be increased by upgrading the processor to an Intel Core 2 Solo SU3500 ULV for an additional $120 or £61, or by upgrading it to an Intel Core 2 Duo SU7300 ULV for another $170, or £77. However, the SU3500 is ranked 258 in our CPU benchmark list and will only provide users with a minor performance increase, whereas the SU7300 is a far superior choice, as it is ranked far higher, at 74.

The entry-level model is fitted with 1GB of DDR3 SDRAM, a 160GB hard drive, an WLAN 802.11 b/g Dell Wireless 1397 adapter and a 6 cell battery. The Latitude 13 can be upgraded to support Bluetooth v2.1 via a Dell Wireless 365 Module, and the US model can also support 802.11 a/g/n via an Intel WiFi Link 5100 adapter. Ubuntu 9.10 is installed on the entry-level model, although other operating systems, such as Windows Vista and 7, are available on the next models up.
