AMD: AMD’s “Bobcat” netbook chips might find a place in servers too

AMD plans to turn the heat on rivals Intel and VIA by introducing server-compatible netbook chips

AMD has been religiously working on its new-generation processors that will see the light of the day very soon. Amongst the various CPU platforms that are on the way, the low-power Bobcat CPUs will power netbooks and ultraportable devices.

But supposedly, AMD has extended plans for the Bobcat platform. AMD’s new CTO Donald Newell, who was previously employed by rival Intel, reportedly revealed that they are interested in testing the Bobcat processors on low-end server platforms. He adds that AMD will definitely try to make the platform compatible with low-end servers although there is a lot of research still to be done.

This concept that AMD plans to implement is not any new to the industry. Until now, Intel's Atom and VIA's Nano CPUs have been doing duty on many servers that are out in the market. Some low-power ARM CPUs are in the making too, which would be compatible with servers. Netbook processors being low on energy consumption and heat generation are thereby preferred on servers even though their processing capabilities are low.  And so they are used in places requiring very less computing power.

With AMD planning to take on its rivals now with server-compatible netbook chips, it will be interesting to see if the AMD chips can actually outperform theirs, as rivals Intel and  Via have had a fair amount of experience in this sector.
