Archos is planning to release a Linux version of its 10-inch netbook Archos 10 - the Archos 10 Ubuntu Edition, which will run the latest Ubuntu 9.04. It will offer 2GB of RAM, a 500GB HDD and a 6-cell battery for €375 (about $525) in France for now. So far this has only been announced for the Archos 10 and not for any other model.

This is only slightly more expensive than the standard Windows XP SKU that costs €349 and comes with 1GB RAM and a 160GB HDD. The reason for this small price difference can be traced back to Windows’ specification of a netbook’s configuration for having to be able to run Windows XP, which is generally - 1GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, probably an Intel Atom processor, and a 9 or 10-inch display. But you don’t have that limitation with Linux; also the cost of Linux goes down significantly to be able to pass on the profits to the customers.

Our kid will sport the same 1.6GHz Atom N270 processor though, along with the 945GSE chipset. Other specifications include,

·         a 1.3MP camera

·         weighs 2.9 pounds

·         measures 10.2 x 7.4 x 1.1″ in dimension

·         802.11b/g WiFi

·         3 USB ports

·         a 6 cell battery

It is not clear whether this will be released outside France or not.
