NVIDIA to provide Tegra for $99 MID

NVIDIA has announced plans of new platform based on Tegra 600 series for low cost Mobile internet devices.

Nvidia has announced its plans to roll out a new platform based on Tegra 600 series system on chip processors for low-cost mobile internet devices at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona. This new Tegra APX 2600 processor is getting rave reviews from HDTV enthusiasts – as reported by Wirelessweek . The chipset is capable of 720p HD output quality (some new sources even speak of 1080p).

In a recent video Nvidia even demonstrates Quake 3 with 35 fps on an Tegra based handheld.

As Techtree says – “Its new Nvidia Tegra 600 series system-on-chip based platform will be used for powering these low cost MIDs. For broadband connectivity, the company has partnered with ST-Ericsson to provide 3G communication to the MID platform.”

NVIDIA says the first NVIDIA Tegra APX-based devices are expected to ship from mid-2009.

NVIDIA Tegra:

Tegra was introduced in June last year. NVIDIA claims it to be a tiny computer-on-a-chip, smaller than a US dime (10-cent piece), designed from the ground up to enable the “visual PC experience” on a new generation of mobile computing devices while consuming the smallest amount of power. The first of this family was the APX 2500 targeted at smartphones and handhelds. The 600 series was the next to come. According to NVIDIA, the Tegra 650 features:

  • All-day media processing, for 130 hours audio, 30 hours HD video playback
  • HD image processing for advanced digital still camera and HD camcorder functions
  • Optimized hardware support for Web 2.0 applications for a true desktop-class internet experience
  • Display support for 1080p HDMI, WSXGA+ LCD and CRT, and NTSC/PAL TV-Out
  • Direct support for WiFi, disk drives, keyboard, mouse, and other peripherals
  • A complete Board Support Package (BSP) to enable fast times to market for Windows Mobile-based designs
