Toshiba to offer Laptops that Sharpen Internet Video
Toshiba’s quad core SpursEngine chip is used to deliver sharper & cleaner full screen Internet video
Toshiba is all set to launch its new Qosmio multimedia laptops which will feature its new quad core SpursEngine chip which is based on the same architecture as the Cell Broadband Engine microprocessor from PS3 and has four SPE (Synergistic Processing Elements) cores instead of 8 cores as in Playstation 3.
The graphics processing chip will help in delivering a cleaner and sharper Internet video when viewed in full screen mode but would not work when video is played in window mode. Also, this would work only with Internet Explorer and not with any other browser. The chip basically has a hardware encoder and decoder for MPEG2 and MPEG4 AVC/H.264 video which can also be used as a co-processor to handle intensive calculations required for delivering real-time high-definition graphics.
Although this technology was present in the earlier Qosmio but it could only clean up video which was played back from a DVD. The new models would support more features and hence a bigger price tag ranging from ¥2,10,000 to ¥3,40,00, that turns around to be US $3,420 for the high end G50 model which has an 18.4-inch (full HD) widescreen LCD, 2.66GHz Core2 Duo processor, a 640GB hard disk and dual digital TV tuners.
These laptops will initially go on sale in Japan only, before they are launched worldwide.
