5mm thick external HDD

Buffalo Technology has recently announced the launch of its new ultra-portable drive, named MiniStation Shinobi (“Shinobi” means “protector”), which the company claims is the world’s thinnest external HDD. This tiny drive measures 1.8 inch long and a mere 0.2 inch (5mm) thick.

The MiniStation Shinobi features an integrated USB cable. You just need to pull it out and plug it in so there are no more problems with loose cables. It is bundled with Memeo’s AutoBackup and Auto Sync software that allow consumers to securely and automatically manage and backup their files. In the event the drive is lost or stolen there is SecureLockMobile software to prevent unauthorized access. The drive comes with portable versions (no install required) of Firefox and Thunderbird (email-client) for those who don't want traces of their web-browsing sessions.

The 30GB model retails for $120, meanwhile the 60GB costs $170.
