AMD: AMD gives out details of Fusion based chips for ultraportables
These Zacate chips will be faster, twin cores and paired with graphics card, which means let’s forget about energy efficiency
AMD was late to arrive in the market of ultraportable processors, which have been dominated by the Atom series from Intel and various ARM-based processors till now – depending upon the form-factor. But the American processor manufacturer, only second to Intel, when arrived - arrived with bang. And now AMD gives out details of its newest Fusion platform for the ultraportables.
Showed off during IFA 2010 in Berlin, AMD’s new Fusion platform is a hybrid mechanism in which combines both an AMD CPU and GPU. Called the Zacate, this platform will be faster than most of today’s ultraportable processors, but will consume as many as 18W of energy. It will have two cores based on Bobcat architecture and will support DirectX 11 3D effects. It is expected to support 1080p video playback as well.
The design is based on 40nm architecture. The availability is not known right now.
