Motorola Xoom Family Edition announced for October 16th

Teaser
The 10.1-inch tablet will be similar to the original Xoom in terms of specs, but with even more pre-loaded software at only $379

Motorola today officially announced a new Xoom tablet, called the Xoom Family Edition. We reported on its imminent release just a few days ago. While it’s not the massive upgrade that users have been expecting with a possible Xoom 2, the Family Edition model will actually be more accessible to users in terms of retail price and preloaded apps compared to the original Xoom.

Nowadays, everyone from mom, dad to the youngest child use the same tablet device,” said corporate VP Jim Hamilton of Motorola in the press release. “We set out to design a device that’s kid and family-friendly yet versatile enough to handle your business needs.

Indeed, the Family Edition tablet will come pre-loaded with almost $40 worth of applications, such as QuickOffice Pro HD and other Motorola-specific apps. For the rest of the family, the tablet will also include games and the award-winning parental care software Zoodles.

Since this new Xoom model is targeting a wider, more family-oriented audience, don’t expect the hardware specs to satisfy any ultra-hardcore users out there. According to the press release, the 10.1-inch Xoom Family Edition will make use of a 1GHz dual-core CPU, IPS display, front-and-rear cameras, 16GB SSD and up to a 10 hour battery life.

The rumored Xoom 2 tablet that leaked a few weeks ago may have in fact been the Family Edition. The smaller 8.2-inch “Media Edition”, however, has yet to be announced and remains a rumor.

The Xoom Family Edition will be available this coming Monday, October 16th in the U.S. across Best Buy Stores for only $379. Hit the press release below for closer details.
