More PlayStation 5 console refresh hints land as wireless earbuds and new headset allegedly in the works for the PS5

A recent report from Tom Henderson at Insider Gaming has added some weight to the rumors that an updated modular PlayStation 5 console could hit the shelves later this year. Purportedly, Sony is busy on creating more PS5 accessories, this time in the forms of wireless earbuds and a new wireless headset. The report states an expected launch date for the new PlayStation products as “the end of FY23”, which is then defined as April 2023 – March 2024. However, depending on Henderson’s sources and actual information received, “end of FY23” could mean various dates, with Sony Group reporting its FY22 Q3 results this February.

No doubt the source will update the potential launch timeframe for the new PS5 accessories when possible, but there are other details to be shared now. Apparently, the codename for the wireless earbuds is “Project Nomad” while the wireless headphones have the codename “Voyager”. It seems the PS5 wireless earbuds will have a 5-hour battery life and can be connected to the console with a USB-C cable for charging purposes. The report also mentions that the “Voyager” wireless headset might be similar in function to the already existing INZONE H7 accessory, but it’s likely it will be dressed for compatibility with PlayStation 5 branding akin the PULSE 3D model.

There is some belief that Sony will produce a refreshed PS5 console later this year with a detachable disc drive, which will eventually replace the existing regular PS5 and Digital Edition PS5 models. While it is unlikely this rumored refresh will be either a PlayStation 5 Pro or PlayStation 5 Slim, with some observers reckoning Sony might just leave things as they are until it’s time for the PS6 (around 2027-28?), with new accessories also on the horizon it can be fair to say that Henderson’s presumption of “a serious relaunch of sorts” is not too wide of the mark. This revamped PlayStation 5 is expected to be launched in September 2023.
