As they promised at CES, Huawei and Amazon collaborated to integrate Alexa into the Mate 9, with more devices to follow.

As announced at CES earlier this year, Huawei and Amazon collaborated to integrate Alexa into the Mate 9 smartphone. Alexa is Amazon's intelligent assistant that previously only resided in voice activated smart devices and an app. The integration is somewhat unusual, as Android already includes a fully-integrated assistant, Google Now. Per Huawei's press release, Alexa will be capable of many of the tasks Google Now can already complete. This list includes: checking the weather and calendar, finding businesses, controlling connected home devices, and getting information about famous people, places, and dates.

Alexa will be provided through an over-the-air update being pushed out to devices today. Even though Huawei is integrating it into their EMUI 5.0 software, Alexa still won't operate as seamlessly as Google Now. In order to use voice commands, the Huawei Alexa app must be open. While this integration will come in handy for those who use Amazon's smart home devices, most users are likely to find Google Now's superior integration more useful. Regardless of its usefulness, Huawei and Amazon have promised that more devices will feature Alexa integration in the future.
