Reviews for the Maingear eX-L 17

While the $4,746 price tag on our eX-L 17 might strike even seasoned gamers as a bit steep, Maingear offers different variations with the same brutish video card all the way down to $1,899. For the amount of horsepower you (still) get on tap, that’s reasonable, but still more than comparable systems from other custom builders. AVADirect, for instance, sells a similar base configuration in the same case for $1,641, and the iBuyPower version starts at $1,539.

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870:
High-end DirectX 11 graphics card based on a desktop HD5770. Models with GDDR5 are ideal but there may be a bottleneck due to the 128 Bit memory bus.
Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.
The Core i5-520M has only 3 MB L3 Cache (compared to the I7-640M) and clocks between 2.4-2.93 GHz (Turbo Mode). Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (GMA HD 3150) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.
