Maingear eX-L 15 Notebook Review: All Dressed Up and Ready to Game
Source: PC Perspective English
Of course, Maingear could have screwed this up by choosing an inferior chassis for their product, but fortunately the Clevo-supplied chassis is a great platform. The display is another of the laptop’s high-points, and the audio, while not best-in-class, is certainly better than much of the competition. My only complaints are the small touchpad and the high system temperatures. If you need an kick-ass, jaw-dropping mobile gaming powerhouse, the Maingear eX-L15 will serve you well.

90% Maingear EX-L 15

At nearly 7 pounds without the power brick, the laptop's weight is reasonable, though a little hefty, for a high-performance gaming unit. The 180W power brick boosts the weight to a backache-inducing 9 pounds, 3 ounces. But if you're looking for great gaming performance, don't mind carrying a little more weight, and have deep pockets, Maingear's EX-L 15 gets the job done.

The eX-L 15 didn't lose a single performance benchmark when pitted against recently reviewed systems, even those built around the same Sandy Bridge platform. Equipped with a Intel Core i7 2720QM processor and Nvidia GeForce 485M, the eX-L 15 lived up to Maingear's lofty claim, at least within the stable of the system's we've recently reviewed.

80% Maingear EX-L 15

If you're interested in one of Intel's new Ivy Bridge CPUs, for now the options are limited to a handful of relatively high-end gaming and multimedia machines. With desktop-replacement power in a midsize package, the 15-inch Maingear EX-L 15 is a niche product, but one that largely delivers.

Maingear: US-American computer manufacturer, founded in 2002 with low international relevance.

These graphics cards are able to play the latest and most demanding games in high resolutions and full detail settings with enabled Anti-Aliasing.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 485M:

High End graphics card based on a full GF104 chip and significantly faster than the 480M.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 675M:

An upcoming high-end graphics card for large notebooks expected to launch with Ivy Bridge processors in the first half of 2012

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.

2720QM: Fast Quad-core processor based on the Sandy Bridge architecture with an integrated graphics card and dual-channel DDR3 memory controller.

3820QM: An Ivy Bridge-based quad-core processor clocked at 2.7 GHz with Turbo Boost support up to 3.7 GHz. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 4000 GPU running at 650-1250 MHz on a dual channel DDR3 memory controller.

15.6: 15 inch display-variants are the standard and are used for more than the half of all notebooks. 15.4 inch display with 16:10 are the standard for notebook displays. However nowadays, more and more 16:9 displays with 15.6 inch appear. The reason why so many people like displays with medium size is, that this size is not exhausting for the eyes, does not need too much energy and the laptops can be kept quite compact.

» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.

3.1 kg:

This weight is average for notebooks. Therefore the numerous mass of laptops with 15 inch display fits in this class of weight.

3.2 kg:

85%: This rating should be considered to be average. This is because the proportion of notebooks which have a higher rating is approximately equal to the proportion which have a lower rating.
