The X460 laptop is another powerhouse mid price machine from MSI. It is a small, perfectly portable chassis with a class leading Core i7 2630QM processor delivering plenty of power for heavy duty tasks such as 3D rendering and video encoding on the move. If you demand a powerful machine but are limited by budget then this is clearly one of the best choices right now.

During light usage the X460 is very quiet and the palm rests barely get warm, but once you start to utilize the power of the Core i7-2630QM, the fan tends to spin up creating quite a racket. Given the compact design of the X460, the cooling capacity is quite limited and this is likely why the Core i7 series can't be paired with a discrete graphics chip. The new X-Slim appears to be solidly built, the screen while glossy was bright and had respectable color reproduction and viewing angles. I definitely liked the keyboard feel and the touchpad didn't present any major issues either. It's hard not to be impressed by the performance and features of MSI's flagship X460 notebook, though I personally find the mix on the X460DX models more attractive. Systems with an i5-2410M, GT 540M, 6GB of RAM and a 500GB HDD can be had for $850, while an i3-2310M with 4GB of RAM can be found for $750.

The MSI X460DX is a very portable 14-inch laptop that has a solid, brushed-aluminum design with lots of offer. It has two of the latest USB 3.0 ports, an Intel Core i5 CPU, 6GB of RAM and discrete graphics. This is definitely a mobile laptop for power users, but it's not without some minor flaws.

The MSI X460DX may not hold the title of "lightest" or "most powerful" or "longest battery life," but it is certainly well rounded. It's light enough to carry around daily, powerful enough to finish everything but the most resource-intensive tasks, and long-lived enough to last through a flight across the country. Plus, its design is forward-thinking with two USB 3.0 ports, and it costs well under $1000.

All in all, MSI has managed to exceed our expectations in most departments with the X460DX. For those who aren't concerned with the somewhat underwhelming screen resolution or camel-like battery life, this is a machine that is definitely worth your consideration. At $850, perhaps a few corners had to be cut, but at least they weren't areas that affected performance and overall usability in any way.

The $849 MSI X460DX offers a strong balance of performance, graphics, and endurance in a modest, unassuming package. We appreciated the 6 and a half hours of battery life as well as the system's vibrant display. However, we weren't fans of its keyboard, speakers, or build quality issues. Users who want more productivity power, a better keyboard, and more solid build quality--but don't need discrete graphics--might want to check out the business-oriented Lenovo ThinkPad T420, which offers a 2.3-GHz Core i5-2410M CPU with 4GB of RAM, a 320GB, 7,200-rpm hard drive, and Intel HD Graphics 3000 GPU for $854. Those looking for a less-expensive option with comparable graphics muscle should consider the $799 Acer Aspire TimelineX 4820TG-6847. Still, if you want a 14-inch system that can handle work and play equally well and last through the day, you'll find a lot to like in the MSI X460DX.

MSI: Micro-Star International (MSI) was founded in 1986 in Taiwan. MSI is especially known as a manufacturer of motherboards and graphics cards for PCs, but also offers computer accessories, complete systems, motherboards, graphics cards, laptops, desktop PCs, monitors and other components. However, the Microstar brand name in Germany belongs to the Medion company. MSI is known for its gaming products and has developed a wide range of gaming laptops and desktop PCs. The company is also active in workstations, servers and industrial automation. MSI has offices in North America, Europe, Asia and Australia.
Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.
Intel HD Graphics 3000: Integrated graphics card in the Intel Sandy Bridge processors (Core ix-2xxx). The HD 3000 is the faster (internally GT2 called) version with 12 Execution Units (EUs).
Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.
NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M:
Mid-range graphics card based on the GT 435M chip (GF108) with higher clock rates and DDR3 support.
» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.
Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
2630QM: Fast Quad-core processor based on the Sandy Bridge architecture with an integrated graphics card and dual-channel DDR3 memory controller.
Intel Core i5:
2410M:
Dual-core processor based on the Sandy Bridge architecture with an integrated graphics card and dual-channel DDR3 memory controller. The CPU is clocked at 2.3 GHz (Turbo Boost 2.6-2.9 GHz) and the GPU at 650 (1200 MHz Turbo).
2430M: Dual-core processor based on the Sandy Bridge architecture with an integrated graphics card and dual-channel DDR3 memory controller. The CPU is clocked at 2.4 GHz (Turbo Boost 2.7-3 GHz) and the GPU at 650 (1200 MHz Turbo).

14.00:
14 inch display size represents a middle ground between the small subnotebook formats and the screens of the standard 15 inch laptops.
The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, provides good resolutions with usable detail sizes, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact.
In the past, 14-inch devices were very rare, but now they are the standard for laptops after the 15-inchers.
