Since the original MSI Wind U100 was released two years ago it has been copied by almost every other netbook manufacturer. It was the first computer to combine a 10in screen, 160GB hard disk, 1GB of memory and a low-power Intel Atom processor - almost every netbook sold today has an identical specification. While a netbook is still sufficient for light use, the U200 is a better option if you want a more capable portable computer

Gone are the days of your netbook being as low powered as one of the flunkies in The Thick Of It. The MSI Wind 12 U200 is the latest lappie we’ve laid our hands-on that mixes the small style skills of a netbook with the beefed up grunt of a proper lappie. So how does this 12.1-inch laptop mashup mix it with its rivals? Read our MSI Wind 12 U200 review now and we’ll deliver up the final say. An excellent and good value compromise between netbook and laptop.

The littler Wind's bigger brother, with better everything, to boot. As a cheap and functional all-day laptop, the MSI Wind U200 is very desirable. Ultimately, choosing a CULV Wind over a netbook Wind is about the size. The final retail version uses an SU41100 processor with slightly less performance but potentially longer battery life. Either way,it's very desirable as a cheap and functional all-day laptop.

MSI - Wind U200 review

MSI may be sitting on the fence somewhat with the U200, which isn't powerful enough to handle intensive graphics processing or gaming but gives the ‘netbook' market a shot in the arm with a higher resolution display and a more powerful processor. This, and the fact that it's quite reasonably priced, suggests that the Wind U200 would prove a popular alternative for those who need a good balance of portability and power on the move.

MSI has done a good job of covering some middle ground with the U200 and, although it will struggle with gaming or intensive graphics processing tasks, it's more than good enough to handle just about everything else you can throw at it. It's slim, versatile, attractive and well-specced, and those who appreciate the extra processing power shouldn't have too much trouble justifying the price.

Despite being marketed by MSI as a netbook under its Wind brand, the use of a 12.1-inch screen and Intel Core 2 Solo processor mean the powerful and portable Wind 12 U200 has more in common with a CULV laptop than most netbooks. The Wind U200 is a good netbook that offers impressive performance and portability. The keyboard isn't the best we've seen, but doesn't detract too much from the otherwise good usability.

The MSI Wind 12 U200 is bigger and more powerful than a typical netbook, yet it's still small and easy to travel with. We love its keyboard, its battery life is good and its CPU is relatively powerful. Our main complaint is that it's a top-heavy unit, so firm knocks can make it topple backwards, especially when using it on your lap.

Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500M: The graphics core of the Intel GL40 and GS40 chipset features a slower clocked GMA 4500MHD (400 versus 533 MHz). Because of the slower core speed, full Blu-Ray Logo support is not given and the gaming performance is a bit worse.

» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.

Intel Pentium M: With Intel chip set (855 or 915) and Intel WLAN also available with the name Centrino (name for the package).
In the comparison very fast per megahertz and very modest with weaknesses in floating point operations.
It is also available as a low voltage version with very small current consumption.

12.1: This is a common display format for subnotebooks. Most netbooks have a tinier display. The advantage is, that the subnotebook can be small dimensioned and can be carried easily. Further the small display needs few energy, which improves the battery runtime and in consequence the mobility. The disadvantage is that the reading of texts is a bit exhausting for the eyes, especially with high resolutions.

» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.

1.4 kg:

This subnotebook is one of the most lightweight of all notebooks and can be carried very easily. There exist only few sub-notebooks, which weight less. 10 inch displays are normal for this class of weight.

1.4 kg:

74.3%: This rating is bad. Most notebooks are better rated. This is not a recommendation for purchase.
