Behemoth for Professionals. MSI’s WT72 now sports updated hardware in the form of a Skylake Xeon processor and a more powerful Nvidia Quadro GPU. The other specs remain largely the same and the workstation thus remains a solid choice for CAD work and 3D modelling.

This is a massive workstation (although a lightweight affair compared to yesteryear's desktop replacement models) with an equally massive price tag. We're disappointed by the warranty which, standing at only 24 months, is far too short for a laptop costing that much. This aspect is especially telling compared to established players like Dell, Lenovo or HP who have workstations that would score worse on the value-for-money front, but end up getting the sale because of the ability to provide far longer (up to five years) and more responsive aftersales service.

While other gaming laptop manufacturers fall into a steady groove with their products, MSI is never afraid to push boundaries. As the first VR-capable workstation, the WT72 is a testament to the company's innovative instincts. For $4,999, game designers, architects and other creative professionals flush with cash can build their own VR worlds, thanks to a system sporting a powerful Intel Core i7 CPU and a Nvidia Quadro 5500M GPU.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
4980HQ: Haswell-based quad-core processor clocked at 2.8 GHz with Turbo Boost support up to 4.0 GHz. Offers an integrated Iris Pro Graphics 5200 GPU and a dual-channel DDR3 memory controller.
6700HQ: Skylake-based quad-core processor for notebooks. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 530 GPU and is manufactured in 14 nm.
6920HQ: Skylake-based quad-core processor for notebooks. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 530 GPU and is manufactured in 14 nm.
Intel Xeon:
E3-1505M v5: Skylake-based quad-core processor for workstation notebooks. Offers an integrated HD Graphics P530 GPU and is manufactured in 14 nm.
