Top-notch. Since our last update article on the MSI 17-inch gaming laptop, the manufacturer has modified certain features. Although our test model, the GT72-2QE16SR21BW, lacks Nvidia G-Sync technology, the Wide-View display entices us to take a closer look.

When all is said and done, the GT72 Dominator Pro G-1438 is a very good gaming laptop that falls a little bit short of being great. Its gaming performance, for instance, is fine. But we've seen better from similarly priced systems. And while the G-Sync feature is a definite plus, that alone isn't going to put it at the top of shoppers' lists.

MSI might not have the brand cache of Alienware or even Asus Republic of Gamers here in the US, but they make a mighty fine collection of gaming laptops and desktops. If you're in the market for a desktop replacement laptop that can do it all, or a gaming laptop that has the best possible specs, the MSI GT72 Dominator Pro G is a top pick.

Overall this was a very impressive performer with a great design and plenty of attention to detail (things like the built-in sound - excellent, by the way - that I didn't even cover here). I found the value to be very high considering what you get for your $2099 investment compared to what's out there in the high-end gaming laptop market, and the outstanding keyboard and excellent screen are reason enough for me to recommend the MSI at this price. Laptops like this aren't for everyone, and far less portable than the classification indicates. Still, 2 hours and 45 minutes of battery life from our demanding PC Per Wi-Fi battery test is actually really good for a gaming laptop, and demonstrates some of the power savings from the Intel Broadwell processor.

Focusing on the gaming experience, the application of a 75Hz G-Sync panel makes a huge amount of sense in a laptop ecosystem. While it is possible to add graphics horsepower until frame rates are playable in a desktop environment, that’s not the case for a laptop. The hardware can show its age far quicker and that’s why adaptive-syncing technologies are smart moves for a mobile environment. When next year’s AAA titles launch and the GTX 980M is already starting to look old, G-Sync may make it possible to enjoy a smooth, stutter-free gaming experience without needing to turn down eye-candy or invest in new hardware. 60 FPS (or perhaps in this case, 75) is no longer the sole target for enjoyable frame rates. And when the GPU is capable of showing its muscle, the panel’s enhanced – 75Hz – refresh rate provides good motion clarity.

Prepare to make all the kill shots. Nvidia's new G-Sync technology could be the beginning of the end of unsightly screen tearing and input latency. By synchronizing the GPU and display refresh rates, you get sharper, instantaneous rendering, which, when paired with the MSI GT72 Dominator Pro's beautiful display, is a sight worth seeing.

The MSI GT72 Dominator Pro G-1438 is a midrange gaming laptop that performs like a high-end gaming laptop. While it does come with a lot of bloatware, and its C: drive is a little on the small side, you can't argue with its best-in-class 3D gaming performance and its gamer-friendly features, like the separate mouse buttons and G-Sync optimizations. It's a smoother operator than the MSI GS60 Ghost Pro 3K, for the same price. Sure, the GS60 Ghost Pro has a higher-resolution screen and is lighter, but the GT72 Dominator Pro gives you a much better experience on 3D games, and after all, isn't that the point? If you have the means, dominate the game grid with this system, our Editors' Choice midrange gaming laptop.

Model: Equipped to dominate the gaming scene, the MSI GT72-2QE Dominator Pro G comes with killer specifications and good look. The entire chassis looks aggressive with edgy lines and air vents mimicking a racing car. There is a sturdy brushed aluminium lid with the MSI branding while the entire laptop comes in dark grey. A key feature of the MSI GT72-2QE Dominator Pro G is the NVIDIA G-SYNC display technology. This enables the display to synchronize its refresh rate to the GPU's refresh rate eliminating screen tearing. The Windows 10 system comes with a beautiful 17 inch Full HD anti-glare LCD display, which produces superb clarity and colors. Audio on the MSI GT72-2QE Dominator Pro G is also similar in quality with the stereo speakers and woofer setup by Dynaudio providing immersive sound.
There are also a 5th gen Intel Core i7-5950HQ processor, up to 32 GB DDR3L RAM, the powerful NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980M with up to 8 GB GDDR5 VRAM and storage solutions up to a combination of 1024 GB Super RAID 3 + 1 TB HDD on-board. Other features on the MSI GT72-2QE Dominator Pro G include either a BD writer or DVD Super Multi drive, a Full HD webcam, a card reader, six USB 3.0 ports, two mini-DisplayPorts and an HDMI out. NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980M:
Fast high-end graphics card based on the Maxwell GM204 chip from the GeForce GTX 900M series.
Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
5700HQ: Broadwell-based quad-core processor for notebooks. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 5600 GPU and is manufactured in 14 nm.» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.
17.30": This display size is a standard format for desktop replacements (DTR). The DTR laptops are heavier to carry, need more power, but texts are easy to read and high resolutions are no problem. DTR are mainly intended for stationary desk use, where weight and energy hunger don't matter. In return, you enjoy the advantages of high resolutions (more details, better legibility).» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.
3.72 kg:
Only a few laptops are in this weight class because the mobility is rather limited due to the high weight.
MSI: Micro-Star International (MSI) was founded in 1986 in Taiwan. MSI is especially known as a manufacturer of motherboards and graphics cards for PCs, but also offers computer accessories, complete systems, motherboards, graphics cards, laptops, desktop PCs, monitors and other components. However, the Microstar brand name in Germany belongs to the Medion company. MSI is known for its gaming products and has developed a wide range of gaming laptops and desktop PCs. The company is also active in workstations, servers and industrial automation. MSI has offices in North America, Europe, Asia and Australia.
