To end on a positive note, the speaker system is rather impressive and we were surprised with the quality of the overall sound, especially in the lower mid range registers.

The MSI CX640 may not be the prettiest 15.6-inch laptop around, or the sveltest, but it certainly offers decent performance. Running on an Intel Core i5 processor, it'll set you back around £600. If you're after a relatively affordable desktop-replacement laptop, the MSI CX640 is worth considering. Just bear in mind that you'll have to learn to love its appearance.

Out of the box the CX640 carries with it a 64-bit copy of Windows 7 Home Premium. There's a bit of bloat ware, but nothing too major that you might find yourself uninstalling quickly.

On the face of it, MSI's good-looking CX640 laptop has most of the bases covered. £600 is a reasonable outlay for a 15.6in machine with an Intel Core i5 2410M chip, discrete GeForce GT 520M 1GB graphics card, 4GB RAM, USB 3.0, and 500GB hard-drive. But specifications are just one part of a modern laptop.

Aside from a keyboard that lacks the quality we'd like to see, the CX640 has no significant downsides. The combination of excellent performance, long battery life, vibrant screen and solid build makes this a fantastic all-round laptop that will suit a variety of tastes and users. Most importantly, it will handle anything you care to throw at it.

The MSI CX640MX may only be a sub-£400 laptop, but it manages to get the formula exactly right. Hitting the balance between style, performance and usability, this feels like it should cost at least another hundred pounds.

MSI: Micro-Star International (MSI), is a Taiwan based computer hardware manufacturer since 1986 best known for desktop computer motherboards. MSI also designs and manufactures graphics cards, barebone PCs, notebook computers, networking products, servers, multimedia, consumer electronics, and storage devices. MSI, as most Taiwanese computer manufacturers, sells products on OEM/ODM basis. It also sells products worldwide based on its own brand name "MSI". The market share of laptops with the MSI brand is rather low.
Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.

15.6: 15 inch display-variants are the standard and are used for more than the half of all notebooks. 15.4 inch display with 16:10 are the standard for notebook displays. However nowadays, more and more 16:9 displays with 15.6 inch appear. The reason why so many people like displays with medium size is, that this size is not exhausting for the eyes, does not need too much energy and the laptops can be kept quite compact.
» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.
2.5 kg:
This notebook is lighter than the average of all notebooks. It is too heavy for sub-notebooks. 14 inch displays are normal for this class of weight.
2.6 kg:
78.91%: This rating is not convincing. The laptop is evaluated below average, this is not really a recommendation for purchase.
