Lenovo V14 Gen 2 laptop review: Passively cooled, affordable & upgradeable
With the V14 Gen 2, Lenovo is showcasing a reasonably-priced office laptop aimed squarely at the entry-level segment. In our review, we explain which pros and cons to expect from a passively-cooled laptop paired with a quad-core Intel Pentium Silver N6000.
It is very similar to the similarly affordable IdeaPad 3 14IIL05. The 8 GB of RAM can be expanded to 16 GB and two SSDs can be fitted (M.2-2280 + 2.5-inch). Our model's FullHD display uses ageing TN technology and although IPS models are available (according to the spec sheet), in reality, they are extremely hard to come by.
Price-wise, the laptop costs around 329 dollars for the 256GB model. Alternatively, V14 G2 comes with more powerful CPUs such as the Core i5-1135G7 or also a Ryzen 5 5500U hexa-core processor which we have already reviewed in the larger Lenovo V15 Gen 2. Direct competition can be found in the form of Acer Swift 1 and the Asus ExpertBook L1.

Case & Features: Expandable RAM and Gigabit Ethernet
In black, the Lenovo V14 proves to be robust with a non-slip surface but is a bit of a fingerprint magnet. The display lid could be somewhat stiffer and the base unit can only be twisted a little. The hinges are tight and don't allow the device to be opened with one hand but it does, however, open to an angle of 180°.
The compact 14-inch laptop, with an 88 % screen-to-body ratio, weighs only 1.32 kg, in contrast to the manufacturer's claimed 1.6 kg. The WiFi module, battery, RAM (1 Slot) and M.2 SSD can be swapped and, additionally, a 2.5-inch SSD can be fitted. The predecessor's SD card reader has been omitted but Gigabit RJ45 and a single USB-A 2.0 port remain. The other USB-A port has been replaced by a USB-C one.
Realtek's WiFi 5 chip is quite sluggish and only sends data at a speed of around 243 MB/s when WiFi 6E chips can do the job many times faster.

Input Devices: A solid Lenovo keyboard with average key travel
The keyboard used here is similar to the spill-resistant one found in the IdeaPad 3 14. Similar to Lenovo's current ThinkPads, the very quiet 16 x 16 mm non-backlit keys possess an average travel of ~1,5 mm. The typing experience is astonishingly good, the pressure point is clear and the keyboard unit is devoid of flex.
The very small touchpad's plastic surface is smooth to the touch but firm pressure has to be applied to the integrated click buttons meaning they register unusually late.
Display: The Lenovo V14 G2 uses antiquated display technology
The 14-inch, 16:9 format, matte FullHD display uses outdated TN technology. This means the displayed content is very dependent on the viewing angle and colors are weak, with 55% coverage of the sRGB color space. At 231 cd/m², not only the brightness is fairly low but also the contrast, which sits at 631:1. At 10.4, the Delta E values differ greatly and images have a very blue tint. Any kind of image processing is, therefore, out of the question but at least PWM flickering is absent.
All in all, the V14 Gen 2 should be primarily used as a stationary PC connected to an external display. Alternatively, either the IdeaPad 3 or the Acer Swift 1 should be considered, as both Asus laptops in our comparison table also use TN displays. According to the spec sheet, a brighter IPS is available but, in reality, they are extremely hard to come by.

In comparison: 53 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 17900 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 3846000) Hz was measured. |
Outdoors, in spite of the display's matte surface, content is only clearly legible in the shade. The average brightness of 231 cd/m² is simply insufficient.
Typical for TN panels, the viewing angle stability is very poor and spoils the user experience in nearly all everyday use cases. We would therefore primarily recommend using the laptop with an external monitor.
Performance: The Pentium Silver quad-core CPU is sufficient for office tasks
The Lenovo V14 Gen 2 is intended for office tasks and surfing the internet. The 8 GB DDR4 RAM can be swapped for a 16 GB module and is the maximum the built-in Intel Pentium Silver N6000 can support. In addition, a dual-channel configuration is not possible as there is only one RAM slot, and, at the same time, no part of the RAM is soldered.
The integrated Intel UHD Graphics (32 EUs) also suffers because of this. The Core-i7 model can be equipped with a GeForce MX350. Models with Intel Core CPUs up to an i7-1135G7 and AMD processors up to Ryzen 5 5500U hexa-core, can be fitted with up to 40 GB RAM and dual-channel mode can be activated.
Test Conditions
The three Windows performance modes have no influence on the CPU's performance limits of 16-watt PL2 and 7-watt PL1. This is also the case in battery mode. However, for our benchmarks, we chose performance mode and for the WiFi battery life test, balanced mode.
Processor
Intel's Pentium Silver N6000 is an economical quad-core CPU with a 6-watt TDP for budget laptops. Multi-core performance is more or less on the same level as a seven-year-old i5 6300U and comparable to the N6000 in the Acer Swift 1. The dual-core Celeron 6305 found in the IdeaPad 3 is considerably slower.
We have already reviewed the Ryzen 5 5500U, currently found in the larger Lenovo V15 Gen 2 which has more than four times the multi-core performance. The Core i5-1135G7, which is also available, is on average 2.5 times faster. Both alternatives also have their noses in front of the Pentium Silver in the area of single-core performance.

System performance
Multitasking is only possible to a limited extent. 4K YouTube run smoothly, using 50 % of the system's CPU resources. As it is not possible to implement a dual-channel configuration, system performance suffers, as seen in PCMark 10.

Mass storage
The Toshiba / Kioxia BG4 with 512 GB is a PCIe 3.0 SSD in the small M.2 2242 format. An M.2 2280 SSD and a 2.5-inch hard drive can also be used but the purchase of an additional connector cable to the mainboard is necessary.
Transfer rates are average, with low 4K values and after a few minutes, the SSD is throttled to half speed due to overheating. However, this is only really noticeable in everyday use when copying large amounts of data with many small files.

Graphics card
The integrated Intel UHD graphics (32 EUs) is connected to single-channel RAM, which is a sort of death knell for gaming. As the office laptop is not really intended for gaming, that shouldn't be of great concern.
Playable games should be around 10 years old, in order to run smoothly at the lowest resolution and settings. The 3DMark 11 benchmark and some games even refused to boot.
An Intel Xe7 (80 EUs) of the Core i5-1135G7 achieves frame rates four times higher and the RX Vega 7 in the larger Lenovo V15 G2 is 4.5 times quicker, with the optional GeForce MX350 found in the Lenovo V17 offering more than seven times the graphical power.

Power consumption
Without continuous load, the Lenovo V14 consumes 11 watts. At 4 watts, the Acer Swift 1 is better (same SoC). Every other competitor in our comparison field achieved lower scores.
At ~16 watts, the load values are low, due to the passively cooled SoC's low 6-watt TDP. During the combined stress tests, 33 watts were consumed for a few seconds - something easily handled by the 45-watt power supply unit.

Battery life
Not much should be expected from the 38Wh battery. However, a runtime of a little over 6 hours is disappointing. With the same battery capacity and SoC, the Lenovo V15 lasts 2 hours longer.
With the same SoC as the V14, the Acer Swift 1 manages twice the runtime in spite of only having 33 % additional battery capacity, even in maximum load scenarios. With the same battery capacity, Lenovo's IdeaPad 3 lasts one hour longer.

Cons
Verdict: Silent & expandable but with a poor display & battery
In our test, the Lenovo V14 Gen 2 Intel demonstrated sufficient power for office and web-based tasks but limited multi-tasking abilities.
However, its potential is wasted by making a dual-channel RAM configuration impossible even though the RAM can be doubled by adding a 16 GB module. Passive cooling is a cost-saving measure which has the positive side effect of making the system run completely silent.
The Lenovo V14 is a silent and affordable office computer which should be used mostly docked.
Some positive aspects are the relatively good keyboard, the Gigabit ethernet port and the possibility of accommodating a second SSD in the 2.5-inch slot - although an additional connection cable is needed for this. By contrast, the performance of Realtek's swappable WiFi module is way below average. Unfortunately, Display Port is absent, as is Power Delivery via the USB-C port meaning you can only connect an external monitor via HDMI 1.4b. In principle, the plastic case is fairly robust but the lid lacks stability.
If you wish to use your laptop in its primary function away from your desk it would also be worth considering the similar and equally affordable Lenovo IdeaPad 3, that we are currently reviewing, which has a speedy AMD SoC. The Acer Swift 1 has an IPS display, is silent, manages twice the battery life and comes with a sturdy metal case.
Price and availability
The Lenovo V14 Gen 2 IJL (256 GB) is available on Amazon for 329 dollars. The larger, review-configured Lenovo V15 G2 is available for 470 dollars, also on Amazon.
