Lenovo ThinkPad T420s Review
Source: Notebooks.com English
The ThinkPad T420s offers great performance, an incredible high-resolution matte display and an excellent keyboard. With extras like better video conferencing and premium audio users will appreciate the T420s as much as IT managers appreciate the security and durability. Thanks to the great $1,099 starting price and feature-set, the ThinkPad T420s is very attractive for business users and a good option for students who want a notebook capable of surviving four years of years of school.

The ThinkPad T420s is another example of Lenovo’s stubbornness. Besides the hardware, which is quick, there’s nothing about this laptop that is particularly modern. The entire design philosophy, from the boring matte black surfaces to the beveled key caps, could easily be at home on a laptop built five years ago. But being stubborn isn’t bad when you have it right.

The Lenovo ThinkPad T420s is amazing when you realize that its power, feature set, and battery yields are usually found in much heavier laptops like the the Dell Latitude E6420. You can find a lighter 14-inch business laptop, but it won't pack in as many features as the T420s, or be priced as reasonably. It's the premier business laptop that should be at your side at all times, whether you're on the road or dwelling in an office, and is the new Editors' Choice for business laptops.

The lightest 14-inch notebook on the market, the Lenovo ThinkPad T420s remains a truly compelling choice for business users looking for the optimum combination of power and portability. The HP EliteBook 8460p has a more attractive design, and the Dell Latitude E6420 offers longer battery life. But if you want the best keyboard, a high-res screen, and solid performance, this is the business laptop to beat.

Battery life with the T420s is disappointing, especially since we got only 2.5 hours of life with the included 6-cell battery. It's definitely a good idea to purchase the additional battery that slides into the optical drive bay if you need more battery life. When using this battery in conjunction with the main battery, we got an extra 1.25 hours of life.

So, am I happy with my purchase? Overall, yes. I’ll get used to the clattery keyboard because it is otherwise pleasant to use. I’ll rarely be needing sustained CPU usage that makes the fan scream (and I can turn on some music to drown the keyboard and noise). And now I’ve managed to tweak the display settings, it looks OK until I look at another, better screen. Finally, I was wanting less weight and in that area the T420s meets the requirements although the UltraBay battery starts to erode the weight margin. This is the first time I’ve bought a Thinkpad. It’s too early to predict if I will repeat the experience but I have invested in the 3 year on-site warranty in case I encounter any problems.

While laptop buyers have been flocking to 13-inch platforms for portability or 15-inch models for mainstream affordability, the happy-medium 14-inch thin-and-light has been all but forgotten. The Lenovo ThinkPad T420s delivers better performance than its predecessor thanks to Intel’s latest Core i5 platform, but the thin machine skimps on battery life.

Business class. The ThinkPad T420s is mainly to convince business customers of its advantages as a powerful and yet portable companion. Equipped with a Core i7-2640M and a fast SSD from Intel as well as built-in UMTS, Lenovo has created good prerequisites for this venture.

In a nutshell, the Lenovo ThinkPad T420s is a powerful business portable that's a pleasure to use, but not exactly a looker. With its contourless, black plastic body and sharp edges, it looks like it has climbed straight out of the 90s.

Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.

Intel HD Graphics 3000: Integrated graphics card in the Intel Sandy Bridge processors (Core ix-2xxx). The HD 3000 is the faster (internally GT2 called) version with 12 Execution Units (EUs).

NVIDIA NVS 4200M: Business Graphics card that is based on the GeForce GT 520M with special BIOS and drivers for business applications. The clock speeds however can in theory slightly surpass the GT 520M, in the Latitude 6420 however they are at a level of the GT 520M.

» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.

Intel Core i5:

2520M: Dual-core processor based on the Sandy Bridge architecture with an integrated graphics card and dual-channel DDR3 memory controller.

2540M: Fast Dual-core processor clocked from 2.6 to 3.3 GHz (Turbo Boost 2.0) based on the Sandy Bridge architecture with an integrated graphics card and dual-channel DDR3 memory controller.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.

2640M: Very fast dual-core processor based on the Sandy Bridge architecture with an integrated graphics card and dual-channel DDR3 memory controller.

14.0: 14 inch display size is a mixture between the small formats of subnotebooks and the 15 inch standard display. The reason why so many people like displays with medium size is, that this size is not exhausting for the eyes, does not need too much energy and the laptops can be kept quite compact.

» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.

1.7 kg:

This sub-notebook weighs less than the average of all notebooks and represents a medium class of weight among the sub-notebooks. 11 inch displays are normal for this class of weight.

2 kg:

These sub-notebooks weight less than the average of all notebooks, but represent a heavier class of weight among the sub-notebooks. 12 inch displays are normal for this class of weight.

82.89%: This rating should be considered to be average. This is because the proportion of notebooks which have a higher rating is approximately equal to the proportion which have a lower rating.
