Lenovo IdeaPad 110-17IKB 80VK0001GE Notebook Review
For the original German review, see here.
We recently tested the IdeaPad V110-17IKB. This laptop has been developed by Lenovo with business users in mind. Sadly, the Windows 10 Pro installation on that model makes it quite pricy. Its sister model has the same build but a lower price and is called the IdeaPad 110-17IKB. This is the model before us today and it is intended for private users. There are some significant differences between the two models: the IdeaPad 110 has a reflective screen whereas the IdeaPad V110 boasts a matte model. The IdeaPad 110 model we are testing uses a dedicated Radeon graphics card. Similarly equipped models can be found in the IdeaPad V110 series as well. The competitors of the Lenovo laptops include laptops, such as, the Acer Aspire E5-774 and the Dell Inspiron 17.
As the two IdeaPad models have the same build, we will not go into further detail about the case, the connectivity, the input devices or the speakers. This information can be retrieved from the review of the IdeaPad V110-17IKB.

Display
The reflective 17.3-inch display of our IdeaPad test model has a native resolution of 1600x900 pixels. The laptop has a relatively low brightness (210.4 cd/m²), but the contrast is acceptable (624:1). Unfortunately, the display suffers from PWM flickering at brightness levels of 70% or less (at 50 Hz). This can cause eye problems and headaches for users.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)
Screen flickering / PWM detected | 50 Hz | ≤ 70 % brightness setting | |
The display backlight flickers at 50 Hz (worst case, e.g., utilizing PWM) Flickering detected at a brightness setting of 70 % and below. There should be no flickering or PWM above this brightness setting. The frequency of 50 Hz is very low, so the flickering may cause eyestrain and headaches after extended use. In comparison: 53 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 18110 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 3846000) Hz was measured. |
When we took the test model out of the box, its screen showed a DeltaE 2000 color deviation of 9.83, which is quite normal for a cheap laptop. Ideally, the laptop should have a deviation lower than 3. Furthermore, the screen suffers from a blue tinge.

This means that the measured response time is worse than the average of all tested devices (33.9 ms). |
Lenovo has installed a TN display with weak viewing angles in the IdeaPad. As such, it is hard to read the panel from all angles. Outdoors, the laptop is challenging to use, as the display is reflective and the brightness is low.
Performance
The IdeaPad is a 17.3-inch office notebook with an Intel Kaby Lake processor. We put down 500 Euros (~$526) for our test model. This makes it the cheapest entry to this series and other configurations are available. If you want a matte panel, you might be interested in the IdeaPad V110-17IKB series (which uses the same build).
Processor
Although this is a new notebook, the processor is quite familiar to us: the IdeaPad is powered by an Intel Core i5-7200U (Kaby Lake) dual-core processor. The ULV all-rounder (TDP: 15 W) offers sufficient performance to meet user needs and provides some future security. The CPU operates at a base speed of 2.5 GHz. With Turbo, the clock speed rises to 3.1 GHz (both cores). The Turbo is available while running on battery and while charging.

System Performance
The performance of the IdeaPad is decent as shown by the PCMark benchmarks. The performance of the laptop can handle office activities and web surfing. Subjectively, we found nothing to complain about. The system runs smoothly and fluidly, but it can be further improved. To achieve higher performance, the HDD must be swapped out for an SSD. The system would run smoother and load times would drop.

Graphics Card
The test model offers the integrated Intel HD Graphics 620 GPU and a dedicated AMD Radeon R5 M430 GPU. The Radeon core belongs to the lower middle-class. It supports DirectX 12 and works at speeds of up to 955 MHz. This means the manufacturer has put a cap on the speed of the AMD GPU (officially 1,030 MHz). This GPU is a renamed Radeon R5 M330. After the latest driver is installed, the GPU is renamed in the system settings to Radeon R5 M330. As such, the performances of the M330 and M430 GPUs in the 3D Mark benchmarks are the same. Both GPUs place neck-and-neck with an Nvidia GeForce 920M.

Gaming Performance
The IdeaPad can run many games fluidly on its screen. However, the games must be set to low resolution and details. Demanding games, such as, Watch Dogs 2 will not run, as the GPU is far too weak. The results of the 3DMark benchmarks show that the dedicated GPU performs slightly above the level of the integrated Intel graphics chip (dual-channel mode active). In summary, the Radeon GPU offers little more than the graphics chip integrated on the Intel processor. We believe it was installed only for market purposes. It would have been simpler to leave the GPU out or install a stronger one.

Temperature
In our stress test, Prime95 and FurMark run for at least an hour together. The laptop runs this test differently, depending on whether it is plugged in or on battery. The CPU always runs at 2.4-2.5 GHz and the GPU works at 400 MHz (on battery) and 955 MHz (plugged in). The laptop does not heat up much. During the stress test, the model only exceeds the 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit) mark in certain areas of the case. In everyday use, the temperatures were always acceptable.
(±) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 40 °C / 104 F, compared to the average of 34.2 °C / 94 F, ranging from 21.2 to 62.5 °C for the class Office.

Power Consumption
When idle, the maximum power consumption is 11.7 W, which is acceptable for a 17.3-inch notebook. During the stress test, the consumption rises quickly to 48.4 W, but then drops to 45.4 W and then stays at this level. The dedicated graphics card contributes significantly to this consumption. Without it, the laptop would be better off. The power adapter has a specification of 65 W.

Battery Life
In our practical WLAN test, we simulated the load of web surfing on the laptop using a script. We set the power profile to "Balanced" and turned off the power saver options of the laptop. The brightness is lowered to roughly 150 cd/m². The IdeaPad achieves a run time of 4:05 hours, which places it at the same level as its sister model (3:51 h).

Verdict
This 17.3-inch Lenovo model is made for private users who need a simple office notebook for their homes.
The Core i5 processor of our test model was the right choice. However, the Radeon GPU seems to be more of a "nice to have, but can live without" feature, as it does not offer any significant performance increases. The manufacturer could have simply skipped it or installed a more powerful model. The laptop barely heats up and works quietly while idling. As soon as the fan hits high speeds, it starts to emit an annoying murmuring noise. Thanks to the 1 TB HDD the user will always have enough space, but it is possible to swap the HDD out for an SSD. This would be possible after opening the case.
About the case: the laptop should be placed on a reliable table. The base of the laptop is weak and the mainboard could be damaged if the laptop is moved around too much. The keyboard of the test model is fine for home use. On the other hand, the screen is poor as it has low brightness, bad viewing angles and a reflective surface. The contrast and battery life are acceptable.
