HP ZBook 15

The HP ZBook 15 is an incredibly powerful workstation or desktop replacement for professionals whose work requires a lot of computing power. It features a stylish magnesium frame with a brushed aluminum casing, which is surprisingly fingerprint resistant. It's extremely thick and heavy, at 1.2 inches (3.05 cm) and weighing a back breaking 6.2 pounds (2.81 kg).

Much of its bulk and weight is due to the workstation being designed to be customized and can support up to 3 hard drives. It has a 15.6 inch anti-glare display with standard 1920 by 1080 HD resolution, and the brightness is strong enough to display clearly under strong light conditions. The ZBook 15 also boast a full sized backlit keyboard and 2 sets of buttons on the touchpad.

For its price, the ZBook15 sure packs powerful combination of ISV certified hardware. With Intel i7 processor and Nvidia Quadro K2100M graphics card, this laptop is optimized for Computer Aided Design, simulation, programming, video rendering, and more. With all its processing power, battery life still fared reasonably well at over 3 hours.

Pure business. The ZBook series may be new, but its first models are coming out with a bang. Following on the footsteps of the ZBook 17, the ZBook 15 is everything the EliteBook series is and more. We take a closer look at the $2999 model in this full review.

If you need workstation power in a laptop then the zBook is worth a look. However, we wouldn't recommend investing in this as a desktop replacement. You'd be better off investing in an actual desktop workstation like the Z1 or even the Mac Pro - which provides Xeon power, SSDs, discrete graphics and plenty of expansion potential.

Our ZBook 15 shipped with the Windows 7 Professional operating system (you can order Windows 8 Pro as a no-cost option). Corporations are migrating to Windows 8 slower than they did to Vista, so this is an important option. A three-year warranty is standard with every ZBook 15, but there are four- and five-year next business-day, on-site plans available for $149 and $259 respectively. Accidental damage and post-warranty coverage is also available.

As far as workstations go, the HP ZBook 15 lives up to its claims, and will meet a variety of needs including those of business and government workers. The myriad of security features in particular are a nice touch, and the battery life is excellent for a laptop as large and powerful as the ZBook 15. The design is conservative, which is to be expected from a notebook that is in part targeted at business workers and government personnel as well as designers and those with demanding needs, but it does have some personality, so you won’t be carrying around a uni-color brick.

The HP ZBook 15 certainly isn't cheap, but mobile workstations that are sturdily built, easily upgradable and high spec-d don't come cheap. If you're a designer using CAD programs, an architect, video editor or engineer and want Quadro graphics rather than the gaming oriented GeForce graphics cards in gaming laptops, the ZBook is just the sort of machine to look at.

The HP succeeds in several key departments: fantastic application power and solid graphical ability mean it’ll scythe through virtually all work applications, it’s got plenty of ports, and good interior access. The keyboard and trackpad, too, are decent. The screen is bettered elsewhere, though, and Apple’s Macbook has a better keyboard and superior battery life. Rivals are also cheaper in most instances.

70% HP ZBook 15u G2 review: Tough but portable, HP's ZBook laptop will appeal to a professional audience
Source: Tech Advisor English Archive.org version
Hewlett Packard has done well to build a lighter weight 15-inch mobile workstation laptop with much of the strength and integrity of its traditional models that are far less mobile in real terms. Sacrifices have been made to the main CPU by fitting dual-core rather than quad-core, and the AMD GPU is a middleweight part rather than fire-breathing FirePro. But importantly the 15u runs cool and quiet enough not make itself a nuisance, even under load. Assuming the version we tested will cost under £2000 it could provide decent value, majoring on resilience more than style and sheer performance, but well enough equipped to prove attractive to the target professional audience.

There's no denying the HP ZBook 15u G2 is a competent workhorse of a notebook. I used it as my primary work computer for many days, and it was always quick in downloading files and smooth to use with multiple programs open. While bulkier, you can get the Lenovo W550s with comparable specs -- and its exceptional battery life - for about $200 less.

With its slim ultrabook design, the HP ZBook 15u G2 goes anywhere, and the combination of Intel Core i7-5600u processor and AMD FirePro M4170 graphics provide moderate workstation capabilities, perfect for content creation and editing. The performance won't match a full-fledged mobile workstation, but the portability counterbalances those concessions with a low weight and decent battery life, great for working with media on the go or in the field.

A sort of one-size-fits-all for the productive professional, the ZBook 15u G2 is an acceptable, if overly expensive addition to a lineup of high-powered portables that promise users a mix of functionality and style in one. This is a computer that be great to have at work, but also wouldn’t be bad to pop open on the sofa at home. It can’t game all that well, but considering it’s not made to, that oversight can slide.

HP ZBook 15u G3

The HP ZBook 15u G3 is a thin-and-light mobile workstation clad in a magnesium-reinforced casing. The display lid features a soft-touch paint around the perimeter with a stylish yet still rather subdued aluminum inlay in the middle. The display lid is thin yet rigid, and it does a good job of resisting twisting or pressure from the back. The HP ZBook 15u G3 is configurable with a few different display options. Among them are three 1080p displays - a standard TN LED anti-glare display, an anti-glare IPS panel with Panel Self-Refresh, and a touch panel with a glossy finish - and a 3840x2160 high-end IPS display. The HP ZBook 15u G3 is configured with the Intel Core i7-6600U. The Intel Core i7-6600U has a base clock rate of 2.6 GHz, with Turbo frequencies of up to 3.4 GHz (single-core) and 3.2 GHz (dual-core). This is certainly powerful enough for everyday activities, but the limitations of a dual-core chip should be considered before deciding on something as critical as a professional workstation. For most users, it will be perfectly adequate, especially when paired with the dedicated AMD FirePro W4190M GPU and 16 GB of DDR4 RAM. The keyboard is backlit and key visibility is good. To the right of the keyboard is a full-sized number pad, which those doing a lot of data entry are sure to appreciate. During continuous web surfing, the 3910 mAh battery is able to last up to 5 hours 12 mins before running out of juice. Standard accessories for the HP ZBook 15u G3 are a 720p HD webcam, internal speakers, WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0, dual SIM, 3 USB 3.0 ports, a fingerprint reader and an SD card reader.

77.7% HP ZBook 15u G3 Workstation Review | Notebookcheck
Affordable, portable, professional… The HP ZBook 15u G3 brings us a thin-and-light mobile workstation with capable specs, all within the realm of affordability. But is it a workstation, or is it an Ultrabook… or is it a little bit of both?
60% HP Zbook 15u G3

The HP Zbook 15u G3 is an odd laptop. It has almost everything most professionals could want out of a workstation, but not quite enough. HP not only fumbles the software but it also chose to include a surprisingly mediocre screen. That might be excusable in a cheaper laptop, but not in a portable workstation that costs so much.

The HP ZBook 15u is like a Hummer H3 with a Mazda Miata drivetrain--it's hard to say exactly where it fits other than as an upsell for the more powerful ZBook Studio and ZBook 15 models, or as a corporate purchase for those whose jobs don't entail heavy computational and design tasks.

Extremely expensive, extremely good? HP’s mobile workstations are traditionally some of the most expensive devices on the market. This did not change with the new ZBook 15 G3. But can the notebook for 4,000 Euros (~$4558) meet our high expectations?

All told, we were a little underwhelmed by the display—an unfortunate first impression for a workstation, and one we're sure would be reversed by the 4K DreamColor panel—but otherwise impressed by the HP ZBook 15 G3. It racked up win after win in our benchmark tests (and is the second fastest mobile workstation we've put through SPECviewperf), and can be configured as a real powerhouse in a 5.7-pound package.

HP ZBook 15u G4

The HP ZBook 15u is a compact mobile workstation equipped with Windows 10 and the latest Intel Core i5 (7th Gen) 7200U / 2.5 GHz processor. The 4th generation ZBook also comes equipped with three USB ports (charging, 3.1 Gen 1 and USB 3.0) a DisplayPort, and a 720p HD webcam. There are several HD touch or a non-touch 4K UHD display options. The HP ZBook 15u has a starting weight of 1.9 kg (4.18 lbs) with a maximum thickness of 19.9 mm. The 15.6-inch display optionally supports touch input. The laptop features a microphone or a dual-microphone array when equipped with the optional webcam. In addition, the keyboard has an integrated numeric keypad as well as a touchpoint interface for those who still enjoy using such over a touchpad. The sides of the workstation house all of the workstation’s connectivity. On the right side there are the USB Type-C charging port, a Dual-Mode DisplayPort for optional digital display devices, an SD memory card reader, a combo microphone-in/stereo headphone-out jack, a USB 3.x port, a space-scaling collapsing LAN port, status lights, a SIM card slot and a power connector. HP also leverages fast battery-charging technology, indicating that users can attain 50% battery life with just a 30-minute charge. As for display, the 15.6-inch SVA TN anti-glare display features a Full HD resolution (1,920 x 1,080 pixels), LED-backlighting, a 16:9 aspect ratio, 300 cd/m² brightness, a 400:1 typical contrast ratio, a refresh rate of 60 Hz, 142 PPI, and viewing angles of 45/45/25/35°. The dedicated AMD FirePro W4190M graphics card has 2 GB of discrete GDDR5 VRAM and delivers a sharp, clear picture. Users will also be able to output video to an external display at resolutions up to 3840 x 2160 using the system's DisplayPort 1.2 and VGA outputs. While this system natively includes 8 GB of 2133 MHz DDR4 RAM in a 1 x 8 GB configuration, it can be upgraded to a maximum of 32 GB when 16 GB memory modules are used in each of the system's 260-pin SO-DIMM slots. For long term storage of files, this ZBook 15u G4 is equipped with a 1 TB 5400 rpm SATA III 2.5" / 7 mm hard drive. If users want to expand their system's internal storage, there is one free M.2 2280 slot. As a business laptop, it starts with a genuine HP BIOS every time. HP Sure Start Gen3 monitors in-memory BIOS, recovers the platform without user or admin intervention, restores the BIOS to a custom state, and is enterprise ready for centralized management. Other security features include Common Criteria EAL4+ Augmented Certified Discrete TPM 2.0 Embedded Security Chip, DriveLock, Absolute Persistence Module and Support for Intel AT. For those who need a proper mobile laptop, the ZBook 15u is definitely a good person to  study first. Hands-on article by Jagadisa Rajarathnam

80.5% HP ZBook 15u G4 (7500U, FirePro W4190M) Workstation Review | Notebookcheck
Ultrabook or workstation. The ZBook 15u G4 is a mobile workstation made by HP that - while cheaper than its brethren - still manages to meet the ZBook’s high quality standards. Unfortunately, the light and thin workstation also comes with lower performance hardware. Find out whether or not the concept works as expected in our extensive review.

All in all though, for the price you're getting a reliable piece of technology. Armed with a spacious and vivid display, as well as a keyboard that lends itself to long hours of typing, the ZBook 15u is the type of workhorse notebook that should make the nine to five grind a tad more bearable.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.

4800MQ: Haswell-based quad-core processor clocked at 2.7 GHz with Turbo Boost support up to 3.7 GHz. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 4600 GPU and a dual channel DDR3 memory controller.

1.9 kg:

3.38 kg:

A laptop with this weight is comparatively heavy and less designed for mobility than for use at the desk. Therefore, the devices tend to shine less with battery life than with a large screen and higher performance.

77.38%: This rating is not earth-shattering. This rating must actually be seen as average, since there are about as many devices with worse ratings as better ones. A purchase recommendation can only be seen with a lot of goodwill, unless it is about websites that generally rate strictly.
