HP TouchSmart tx2-1275dx
Source: CNet English
The HP TouchSmart tx2-1275dx represents a minor update to the company's consumer tablet. Compared with the TouchSmart tx2z we reviewed earlier this year, which carried a baseline price $999 that quickly rose as you upped the specs, the retail-only TouchSmart tx2-1275 is a fixed configuration model priced at a reasonable $849. A fair price, an attractive design, and multitouch support may allow tablet shoppers to overlook the HP TouchSmart tx2-1275dx's middling performance and poor battery life.

HP's Touchsmart TX2 comes kitted out with a capacitive panel that can track several fingertips doing different things at once. Although the screen is sophisticated enough to handle lots of gestures, the software can interpret just a few - tapping, double tapping, zooming text or rotating pictures and opening the MediaSmart 2.0 application. Fortunately, it's a good enough laptop in its own right that it doesn't have to rely on multi-touch to get it recommended

Unlike standard notebooks, tablet PCs such as this HP Touchsmart TX2 feature a screen that can swivel and fold back on itself. The screen is touch-sensitive, which means you can then write directly on the display with a stylus or use a finger to tap on icons and buttons, rather than having to use a keyboard and mouse. Its multi-touch gestures are interesting, but they're not enough to make the Touchsmart TX2 stand out.

As far as Tablet PCs go, the HP TouchSmart tx2 gets enough right to warrant a look. This media-friendly tablet tries to take the TouchSmart desktop experience on the road, but at this point the size of the device and the software's limitations mean its touch capabilities are more a gimmick than a useful addition.

HP TouchSmart tx2 Review

After everything is said and done it's tough to be overwhelmingly positive or negative about the HP TouchSmart tx2. On one hand, HP succeeded in bringing us an affordable multi-touch notebook loaded with cool entertainment features and a slick interface to keep consumers happy. On the other hand, the new multi-touch interface doesn't always respond exactly as it should and you may end up touching the screen multiple times before the screen finally does what it should have done the first time you touched it.

Anybody in the market for a ultra mobile laptop could do a lot worse than the Touchsmart TX2. It’s a comfortable and stylish machine, and it’s crammed with features. We’re not so sure it’s successful as a Tablet PC, however, where it’s slightly too bulky for comfortable one-handed use, and the screen that responds to finger inputs in addition to a stylus proved too quick to register movements for our liking.

HP isn’t calling its new Touchsmart tx2 a tablet, but with a screen that swivels and folds back on itself it certainly looks like one. We can forgive HP for not wanting to use the T-word though, since tablet PCs have never really taken off. Unlike previous touchscreen laptops, the Touchsmart tx2 can be navigated with two fingers on the 12.1in display a technique made popular by the iPhone. Good range of features, but we were hoping for more from HP’s multi-touch capable screen

Stylish, comfortable and well-equipped, but not the fastest machine. Where most Tablet PCs are primarily aimed at corporate and field workers, HP's TouchSmart tx2-1020ea is a touchscreen laptop that targets the regular consumer. The 12.1-inch screen swivels and folds flat for tablet use. There's a stylus tucked into the corner of the chassis, so you'll be able to control the cursor and enter text directly on to the display itself, and the panel also responds to finger inputs. Comfortable, well-equipped and offering good build quality, the tx2 is an impressive laptop. We're not certain it makes a great Tablet PC, however, proving too unwieldy for comfortable one-handed use.

HP - TouchSmart tx2-1020ea review

Microsoft might have put a lot of money behind the concept over the years, but tablet PCs have always struggled to capture the imagination of the public. There's plenty to like about the TouchSmart tx2: it's attractive, well-designed, makes full use of Windows' built-in tablet features and is reasonably priced. However, if you've never been interested in tablet PCs, it's unlikely this one is going to give you a sudden enthusiasm for them, and we wish HP had made more of its multi-touch screen.

Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.

ATI Radeon HD 3200: Onboard (shared Memory) graphics chip (on RS780M chipset) based on the HD 2400 graphics core. It also features the UVD video engine to decode HD videos. Beware: Under Windows XP the HD 3200 may have no 2D accelleration because of a driver problem.

» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.

AMD Turion X2 Ultra: The AMD Turion X2 Ultra is part of the Puma platform and a mixture of the old K9 core (form the Turion 64 X2) and some parts of the K10 architecture (memorycontroller, hypertransport, crossbar switch from the Phenom). Because of the increased L2 cache ("Ultra" CPUs) and the improved memory controller, the performance increased a bit. Still a similar clocked Core 2 Duo is noticably faster.

ZM-86: Mixture out of two K8 based cores and K10 uncores (e.g. memory controller). Offers improved power saving functions compared to older Turion CPUs but still not as good and fast as a Core 2 Duo. The ZM-86 is the fastest CPU of the ZM series and a middle class CPU in 2008.

ZM-84:

Mixture out of two K8 based cores and K10 uncores (e.g. memory controller). Offers improved power saving functions compared to older Turion CPUs but still not as good and fast as a Core 2 Duo. The ZM-84 is similar to the ZM-85 but features a slower clocked HT link.

AMD Turion X2: The Turion X2 (without 64) is based on the Turion X2 Ultra, but has only 1024 MB L2 Cache and is therefore slower (performance compareable to the old Turion 64 X2). Because of new parts from the K10 architecture, the CPU should be more energy efficient.

RM-74:

Griffin based entry-level dual core processor. The cores are still based on the old K8 architecture (memory controller is newer).

12.1: This is a common display format for subnotebooks. Most netbooks have a tinier display. The advantage is, that the subnotebook can be small dimensioned and can be carried easily. Further the small display needs few energy, which improves the battery runtime and in consequence the mobility. The disadvantage is that the reading of texts is a bit exhausting for the eyes, especially with high resolutions.

» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.

2 kg:

These sub-notebooks weight less than the average of all notebooks, but represent a heavier class of weight among the sub-notebooks. 12 inch displays are normal for this class of weight.

3.9 kg:

This laptop is heavy below average, compared with the average of notebooks. Therefore especially desktop replacements fit in this class of weight.

68.55%: This rating is bad. Most notebooks are better rated. This is not a recommendation for purchase.
