Windows Chromebook. HP tries to compete with Google's Chromebooks with a slim 14-inch Windows notebook. An AMD APU works inside. The concept sounds good, but is it really convincing?

HP Stream 11-d001dx
The HP Stream 11-d001dx is a fun and user friendly laptop that does not hurt the wallet. There are two striking colors to choose from; blue and purple. The entire device comes in the selected color apart from the white island-style keyboard. The chassis is covered with a subtle pattern and looks clean and streamlined. The Windows 8.1 64-bit laptop packs in an Intel Celeron N2840 dual core processor clocked at 2.58 GHz with 1 MB cache and Intel HD Graphics.
There is 2 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 RAM and a 32 GB eMMC drive included. The specifications are as expected for the price point. The Stream can perform everyday tasks such as web surfing and play basic multimedia content. The one thing HP decided to splurge on is the 11.6 inch HD anti-glare WLED display. Output is crystal clear with good colors and contrast.
Other features on the HP Stream 11-d001dx include WiFi, Bluetooth, a USB 3.0 port, a USB 2.0 port, HDMI output and a headphone/microphone combo port. Besides this, there is a multi-format SD media card reader which could be used to increase the storage capacity and a HP TrueVision HD webcam. The entire setup weighs in at 1.24 kg and comes with a 3-cell lithium polymer battery which enables up to 8 hours of battery life.

It's a close-run thing between the HP Stream 11 and the Asus EeeBook X205TA. The Stream 11 has a small performance advantage thanks to its higher clock speed, and the screen is marginally better. However, this comes with a significant 300g weight penalty. Either way, both of the laptops are a steal at £180 and are well worth your cash if you're on a budget. If the Stream 11 doesn't quite fit your needs then check out our regularly-updated Best Laptops and buying guide.

Yes, if you have to stick to a tight budget. For £179.99, the HP Stream 11 is ridiculously good value for money for a Windows laptop, particularly considering you get an Office 365 subscription worth over £50 with it. Key features like battery life, speaker quality and design all left really good impressions on us, and ensure the Stream 11 will serve almost any student well. It might not allow you to watch all of the Rocky films back-to-back, but it’s more than good enough for casual entertainment and work.

What’s more, it’s a bit more versatile than a Chromebook, working brilliantly with online apps, but still able to run more conventional Windows software if you’re sensible about your requirements or pair it with an external USB 3 hard disk. As a result, while the Toshiba Chromebook 2 offers better hardware and a nicer screen, the Stream 11 outmatches it for sheer value for money. It’s the best sub-£200 laptop money can buy.

The HP Stream 11 is a full-fledged Windows device that is priced lower than most of the Chrome OS devices. This makes it a no-brainer for shoppers that are looking for a budget laptop that will help them to get things done on the go. The HP Steam 11 is also very portable and sports an exceptional keyboard. For a device of this calibre, the audio is not bad and you can always give it a boost with a great pair of headphones. Additionally, the HDMI port allows you to use the Stream 11 on your flat screen television for large screen entertainment. Plus, it comes with a Windows Store gift card which reduces the price.

Overall, the Stream 11 is one of HP’s more interesting entries in the consumer laptop space, and it’s an entry-level unit that should be just fine for anyone who wants a basic and small computer. Its battery life is good (it lasted 6hr 17min in our video rundown test), its screen isn’t glossy (though it does look a little dull), and the overall build and feel of the unit is not cheap (despite the price).

For many people, the fact that Windows laptops can run desktop apps (and work fully offline) means they're inherently better than Chromebooks, regardless of the price. As a bonus, the Stream 11 actually costs less than most Chrome OS devices, which could make it a no-brainer for some shoppers.

The pitch for laptops running Google's Chrome OS, known as Chromebooks, is pretty straightforward. The HP Stream 11 aims to be an cloud-focused laptop, much like a Chromebook, but with the added utility of Windows 8. It's a rock-bottom budget laptop, so don't get your hopes up, but the battery life is impressive.

There's a war going on between Microsoft and Google, and because of that shoppers will ultimately win. But is the HP Stream 11 a winner? In many ways, yes. This ultraportable is more versatile than a Chromebook, and I like the comfortable keyboard and loud speakers. And while the playful design isn't for everyone, it will definitely stand out in a crowd.

The $199 HP Stream 11 is a surprisingly successful Windows alternative to a Chromebook for mostly cloud-based computing. The Stream 11 is a niche product compared to low-priced laptops with conventional storage, but we've given four stars to numerous Chromebooks and the HP deserves no less.

HP Stream 13-c020nr
Despite rather low retail price, the HP Stream 13 is a new ultra-portable laptop with a basketful of surprises. The Stream 13 comes in 2 unique gradient of colors, Horizon Blue and Orchid Magenta, which looks pretty sweet and eye catching to conventional laptops. The chassis is made of plastic rather than aluminum to reduce weight, though it still feels solid unlike other low cost laptops such as the Chromebooks. At only 0.77 inch (1.96 cm) thick and 3.33 pounds (1.51 kg), it is easy on the back and fits well on the lap or into an airline tray table. The Stream 13 has a 13.3 inch display with a 1366 by 768 resolution. The picture quality is decent, though limited in max brightness and viewing angle. Storage is a double edged sword. The Stream 13 uses a 32 GB solid state drive, which makes it run pretty fast, but is not really practical for storing any reasonable amount of data. Users are encouraged to use the Microsoft OneDrive online cloud storage system, with free service in the first year, though there is always the old fashion way of external hard disks. Battery life on the Stream 13 is amazing at over 9 hours, sufficient for an entire day of work without going back to the plug.Specifications

The Stream 13 offers solid battery life, a good enough screen, a better than good enough keyboard, and capable connectivity in an attractive (if slightly garish) and highly portable package. It's even more likable than the Stream 11. The bigger sibling of HP's landmark Stream 11 delivers the productivity basics in a Chromebook-busting $229 package, with LTE and touch-screen models available for big spenders.

A $200-$230 computer is appealing. The price may grab headlines, but the slow performance, substandard storage total, minimal RAM, and mediocre display should make potential buyers pause before hitting the ‘buy’ button. The machine will only please a small segment of the population who like the idea of a Chromebook, but find ChromeOS limiting because they use one or two Windows programs they can’t live without. My wife fits that group. She can’t imagine living without Microsoft Publisher to create fliers and worksheets for her classroom. For that reason alone the HP Stream 13 makes sense. She doesn’t need more power or storage and loves the look and built quality.

For those who prefer Windows OS, the HP Stream 13 offers better software flexibility than Chromebooks for a comparable price. For $230, you get more high-quality apps that can run offline, plus a comfortable keyboard, strong speakers and fairly smooth performance in a fun design. The two things that hold this system back are its dim display and below-average battery life (though 6.5 hours is decent).

The HP Stream 13 is a great laptop for the money. It reverses the conventional wisdom that you have to pay a premium for an ultraportable laptop, and it undercuts the pricing of most of our recent Chromebook review units by anywhere from $20 to $100. It's quicker than other Windows PCs at or above its $230 price tag, thanks to a relatively speedy eMMC SSD. If you have constant Internet access or a spare $12 to $40 for a 64GB microSD card, you won't have to worry about running out of room on the 32GB SSD.

HP Stream 11-d020nr
The HP Stream 11 is Microsoft's answer to the emerging low cost Chromebooks flooding the market. While within the low cost category, the HP Stream 11 is optimized for slimness. With a fanless design, the build is barely 0.8 inch (2.03 cm) thick. It comes in Orchid Magenta, certainly a loud, eye catching color which might prove too bright for users who prefer more conservative designs. The screen is an 11.6 inch display with a 1366 x 768 resolution, which provides decent image quality. The hardware for the HP Stream 11 comes with a few surprises. The designers squeezed in an almost full sized keyboard, which is very unusual in 11.6 inch devices. However, the Delete, Esc and arrow keys are half sized. The HP Stream 11 comes with an Intel Celeron dual core processor with 2 GB of RAM, which is sufficient to smoothly run most light applications. The HP Stream 11 also comes with a couple of additional perks such as 1 TB of OneDrive storage and Microsoft Office 365 Personal for a year.Specifications

Overall, with a full version of Windows 8.1, 1TB of cloud storage, and access to Office 365, it is obvious that Microsoft has designed the Stream 11 to occupy a market that was previously taken over by Chromebooks. Although it is still a budget laptop with a few tradeoffs to prove it, I think the drawbacks can be forgiven when you look at all of the other advantages to this little laptop.

For an inexpensive Windows laptop, our top pick is the HP Stream 13 (13-c020nr), which is merely $30 more expensive, but offers similar portability and performance without the wonky touchpad issues. The Stream 11 does, however, offer a nice alternative to the Asus Transformer Book T100TA (64GB), provided you don't need tablet capability, and is a good choice over the Acer Chromebook C720P-2600 if you want to save a few extra bucks and still have Windows onboard.

Are HP’s new Stream machines really Chromebook killers? As a fan of the Chromebook it pains me to say it, but yes. The x360 is as well made and stylish as most Chromebooks but offers the full Windows experience which, at version 8.1, ain't at all bad. Once you install Chrome and the Google apps launcher you pretty much have a Chromebook anyway. The build quality, design and basic hardware of the x360 are all better than I expected for the price making it a hard machine to criticise.

The HP Stream 11 is a very nice laptop indeed. Perfectly suited to web surfing and cloud integration, if you can get past the slightly childish build and appearance, you’ll find a very capable machine under the surface. What’s more, the value for money is absolutely stonking. Considering it costs less than a budget smartphone, the Stream 11 has no business being anywhere near this good.

The HP Stream 11 is using the cheapest Intel chip that can run Windows comfortably, has a very limited eMMC storage card with just 20 GB available space, and includes a free version of Windows given away to PC makers to keep Google Chrome OS at bay. But the result is a surprisingly useful compact laptop, attractively styled for anyone that likes bold bright colours. It runs quick enough to surf and type, and always remains cool and silent. To use HP’s own bizarrely chinglish marketing prose, that’s got to help you ‘work from happy place’.

Ultimately, while the Stream 11 looks like a laptop, it doesn't really offer the full range of functionality that laptops do. With the performance of a tablet but no touchscreen, it winds up feeling exactly like a reimagined netbook. What would really make this product interesting is if HP were to offer some kind of deal with mobile service providers for a reasonable amount of free 3G data every month. For now though, we would advise buyers interested in the Stream 11 to think very carefully about whether it will suit their needs.

For only $230, the Stream 13 offers the flexibility of a full Windows 10 experience and the performance to handle basic computing needs. Giving this laptop an attractive design and solid build quality, HP put together a strong package for the money, but we wish the system lasted longer on a charge and offered a brighter display.

The HP Stream succeeds where many others have failed: making cheap look good. And I mean cheap in a literal sense -- the best laptops start around $1,000, while the HP starts at $200. It's £149 in the UK, or around AU$300 in Australia. The HP Stream laptop deftly balances fashion and function at a rock-bottom price.

HP Stream 11-r000ng
The HP Stream 11-r000ng is an entry-level laptop. The blue plastic chassis has a unique design, which might be too colourful and flashy for some people. The Microsoft Windows 10 Home 64-bit system features a 1.6 GHz Intel Celeron N3050 processor, an Intel HD Graphics (Braswell) graphic card, 2 GB DDR3L RAM and a 32 GB eMMC flash disk. Its 11.6-inch TN panel features HD resolution (1366 x 768 pixels) and a 16:9 aspect ratio. Color accuracy and brightness are average and response time is slow. Thus, the display might be unsuitable for playing fast-paced 3D games. However, this laptop is not designed for demanding gaming anyway. The decent keyboard is suitable for those who want to type books, reports, and longer emails. The touchpad is easy to navigate and it supports Microsoft Windows gestures. The Connectivity includes a USB 3.0 port, a USB 2.0 port, an HDMI port and an audio combo jack. The 1.18 kg system achieves a battery life of up to 6:34 hours.Specifications

Netbook revival? For around 200 Euros (~$220) the customer receives a mini Windows device with a bit of local storage and a poor TN panel. Still, the price is great for a Windows 10 Home device (64-bit).

The best for the last: this Windows laptop only cost $220, and it has an 11-inch model that you can buy it at $200. If there´s a cheap laptop that wears decent specs and features and that could convince anyone because of an extremely affordable price, the HP Stream 14-ax010nr is definitely the one.

When every penny matters, the HP Stream 14 is a colorful option with a budget-friendly price. It offers a 14-inch display, all the basic ports you'll need and good-enough performance that will get you browsing the web and typing up papers in no time. However, the Lenovo Ideapad 100S-14 has a much better keyboard and superior build quality, though it has shorter battery life and less RAM. If you're willing to spend just a bit more, consider the $350 Acer Aspire E 15 (E5-575-33BM), which remains our top pick for budget laptops.

It's hard not to be charmed by the little $200 HP Stream 11 and its colorful chassis. After all, it's so small and light that you won't mind bringing it with you everywhere, and with over 8 hours of battery life, you can safely leave your charger at home. What makes the Stream 11 a particularly good bargain is that it has 4GB of RAM, which means it's peppier than similarly priced competitors that have only 2GB. Parents should definitely consider buying this laptop for their children.

The HP Stream 11 just works. That may not seem like high praise, but it is at this price point. With a solid design, a great keyboard, reliable performance, and strong battery life this an affordable laptop that you can rely on. The screen leaves a bit to be desired, and the lack of onboard storage means that you’ll need to invest in expandable memory if you want to download applications. However, those are small issues at this price point. With affordable laptops, you always need to give up something, but it feels like you’re giving up very little with the HP Stream 11.

HP Stream 11 Pro G3 Z2Z28ES
Are you ready to listen the story of the worst laptop ever? That is a bold entrance to an article, I know. But unfortunately that is the case for this laptop. The Stream 11 series are small and compact netbooks. At least, this is what HP intended to achieve, I guess. But the bad part is not about the idea. I think it is a great idea. But there is a problem with netbooks in my opinion. Yes they are small, lightweight and easy to carry around. But having a small case also means making lots of trade offs in the name of being small. Now, okay, some of you might say, what is bad about it? My answer to that would be, if I cant even run Office software smoothly why does this laptop even exist? Yup, that is the story with most of the netbooks if not with all. With the Stream 11 Pro, you get a device that weighs only around 1.3 kg, which is good. But having a 64 GB eMMC drive is very limiting. The Intel Celeron N3060 is not a power house either. Combine this with 4 GB of RAM and try to run Windows 10 on it. Can you get the idea? Of course price is another thing to be considered. Yes, netbooks are cheap, but don't let that fool you. Cheap stuff comes with added price of frustration most of the time. Therefore, if you are on a tight budget and desperately need a new laptop, make sure you are buying something that will really meet your needs, always check for alternatives, so that you don't end up buying something and then have to buy something better later. With 4 GB of RAM, only 64 GB disk capacity and a Celeron processor this laptop is unfortunately a no go. Even for surfing the internet, its performance is very limited. An Android tablet would be much more usable in most of the use cases. Are there any advantages of this laptop? Well, nothing besides being small and lightweight. But when you have the money, of course there are some premium models that are a light as a netbook and provide maybe 10 times more the performance. So overall, my piece of advice is to not buy this laptop, no matter how much you liked it. Because, it will be just waste of your money. Hands-on article by Ümit Yılmaz GüneşSpecifications

HP Stream 14-cm0004ns
The HP Stream 14-cm0004ns is an entry-level laptop designed for maximum portability. HP has found its niche in the low-cost sector when it launched its "Stream" line. These laptops are not oriented to the most demanding users but to users who require a laptop to watch movies, edit documents and surf the web. The design of the HP Stream 14-cm0004ns is relatively simple, it has a plastic finish on the casing. The snow-white color gives it a distinctive touch that differentiates it from the tide of black or grey computers that currently flood the market. This thin and very easy to carry notebook offers reliable performance. In addition, it allows users to socialize, be productive and be connected with what matters most thanks to a long-lasting battery. Besides that, this lightweight notebook features a micro-edged screen with an ultra-thin bezel that is only 6.5 mm thick, providing a larger screen in a smaller frame. As for hardware specifications, users have an AMD A4-9125 dual-core processor that works at a base frequency of 2.5 GHz and reach its maximum power at 2.7 GHz once it denotes that the program used requires more power. To this processor is added 4 GB of last generation RAM (DDR4) that works at 1,866 MHz. This combination added to a type of 64 GB eMMC storage (expandable via SD card) gives us a laptop suitable for simple tasks such as surfing the web, chatting with friends, watching streaming movies and editing documents. The display of the HP Stream 14 has a diagonal of 14 inch with an HD resolution of 1,366 x 768 pixels, enough to display high-resolution content. The laptop assures up to 10.5 hours of autonomy, which under real use easily translates into about 7 to 8 hours with the brightness to full and working with numerous programs at the same time. With long battery life and fast charging technology, this laptop allows users to work and play throughout the day. Looking at the connectivity options, users have the classic WiFi and Bluetooth while at the port level, users can find two USB 3.0 ports, a USB 2.0 port, HDMI output, an audio jack, an Ethernet port and even an SD card reader. As a conclusion, the HP Stream 14-cm0004ns is a decent entry-level laptop. It is certainly not a device for heavy tasks and professional workers, but for entry-level users who do basic and simple tasks, such as streaming, checking emails and browsing. It is also very affordable, which makes it appealing for basic users. Hands-on article by Jagadisa RajarathnamSpecifications

If you’re looking for a sub-$250 laptop that runs Windows 10, you won’t do better than the HP Stream 14. It works for basic web browsing and streaming. Its light footprint and price tag make it a great match for those tied to the cloud and those who love running remote desktops, but its longevity is ultimately hampered by its soldered-in storage and memory. For most people, this will be at best a stopgap between now and their next laptop purchase in a year or two, so we recommend saving up a bit to at least $300 if you're able to.

If all you need is a portal to the internet and you’re limited to a budget of $200, a Chromebook will almost certainly be a better choice than the Stream 11. One excellent alternative that’s an especially good option for kids is the Dell Chromebook 11 (3100). The Chromebook 11 is also an 11-inch laptop that vaguely resembles a netbook, and it is equipped with similar specs. But because Chrome OS requires fewer computing resources than Windows 10 does, it feels snappier for basic tasks. The styling isn’t bad, the chassis is sturdy, and you might even make good use of the HDMI port by plugging it into an external monitor to escape the drab 11.6-inch screen. Just know that for the same money you might also consider a refurbished, used business machine with much more pep in its step, and a better, bigger screen.

7.00:
This display format is in the mid-range for smartphones. It offers a compromise between good visibility, details and resolution on the screen, and you can still fit it into trouser pockets.
8.00:
Large smartphones and a few small tablets are available for this display size. Unlike most smartphones, you can see more on the screen, more details and use larger resolutions. Such formats are better for people with defective vision. However, such devices are no longer easy to fit in a pocket, and they are probably not quite light either.
14.00:
14 inch display size represents a middle ground between the small subnotebook formats and the screens of the standard 15 inch laptops.
The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, provides good resolutions with usable detail sizes, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact.
In the past, 14-inch devices were very rare, but now they are the standard for laptops after the 15-inchers.

73.68%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
