The HP Pavilion dv6 is a midrange model from HP. Its multimedia capabilities suit it to a range of uses, from office applications and Web browsing to watching movies and viewing your holiday snaps. With its appealing visual design and very complete feature set on paper, the HP Pavilion dv6-1225ef look promising. Unfortunately, its disappointing performance, very poor battery life, and glossy, poor-quality display panel take away points.

HP's Pavilion dv6-1360us is billed as an entertainment laptop and it certainly has a fair number of features that can be used towards this end. The large, high performance hard drive provides plenty of space for digital media along with a solid performing 3D graphics processor that handles HD video streams without issue. The system is more of an all-around design that can do most things well but doesn't necessarily excel at any one task. For its roughly $900 price tag, it is a good solid system looking to do internet, video and PC gaming.

HP had better hope its Pavilion dv6-1375 is not sitting on retail store shelves directly next to the Sony Vaio VGN-NW270F/S. Both are 15.6-inch laptops, but the Vaio NW270 costs $200 less and offers the same performance, better battery life, a Blu-ray drive, and a superior design. You can find a better-designed, longer-running, Blu-ray equipped 15.6-inch for less than the HP Pavilion dv6-1375dx.

This reasonably priced 15-inch multimedia notebook, available at Costco, is chock-full of features and makes use of Intel's latest mobile dual core processor, the Core i3. Available at Staples for $779.98, the HP Pavilion dv6-2150us is a good choice for budget-savvy users who want the power of Intel's latest Core i3 CPU to process their multimedia and productivity workload. However, it's not the best choice, as there are other similarly priced 15-inch notebooks that give you more bang for your buck. The HP Pavilion dv6-2150us delivers Core i3 processing power in an affordable 15-inch frame, but it lacks 3D muscle.

HP's Pavilion dv6-2190us is one of many new affordable higher performance laptops available with the new quad core Core i7 processor. Performance is very strong but the system does run hot and requires a very large power adapter to be carried around frequently due to its limited battery life. It would have been nice to see HP upgrade more aspects of the system from previous versions but it does offer a fair amount of functions for those not wanting to spend much more than $1000 on a laptop.

The 2005AX model isn't a big update when compared to the DV6 1211AX. It sells for an MRP of Rs. 49,703. That's slightly expensive when you compare it to the Dell Studio 15, which sells with a Core i3 2.26 GHz processor and slightly inferior ATI Radeon 4570 graphics for almost 6,000 rupees cheaper. This laptop would make a a good buy if it were priced lesser by three-four thousand. It does deliver on the gaming front and is definitely suitable for playing newer games at a smooth pace.
If you are looking for a laptop with a big screen and want to do some gaming, the HP DV6 2005AX is a decent buy. Just make sure you have a power plug nearby and its not kept on your lap while doing resource-intensive work.

Other than being the first AMD Vision–based laptop to pass through PC Labs, there's nothing that makes the HP Pavilion dv6-3013cl ($799.99 list) stand out in the crowded mainstream laptop market. Its performance is good, but not great, and the same can be said for its battery life. And while it does boast ATI Radeon graphics, the GPU is an integrated solution and performs like one. The biggest improvement over previous dv6 iterations has to do with the design; HP traded in the glossy crop circle pattern for a more subtle finish. The dv6-3013cl is a capable performer, but there are other similarly priced 15-inch notebooks out there that offer more features and better performance.

The HP Pavilion dv6-3010us ($699.98 list), sold at Staples, boasts a couple of noteworthy new features. For starters, it's one of the first Pavilions we've reviewed to feature HP's new design. It's also one of the first laptops to pass through the Labs with AMD's latest Vision platform. Both the new design and the new AMD Vision platform are mixed bags. We applaud HP's move away from the high-gloss Pavilion chassis it has used for the past few years, but both the keyboard layout and touchpad design will take some getting used to. Also, AMD's new platform offers fair performance and battery life, but it still can't compete with similarly priced Intel Core i3- and Core i5-based systems. The HP Pavilion dv6-3010us is certainly an attractive-looking laptop, but you can find better value and performance elsewhere.

HP - Pavilion dv6-3085ea review
Source: IT Reviews English Archive.org version
We love the metallic look of the Pavilion dv6 and found that the dual ATi graphics really help to extend battery life. Although HP has chosen a relatively slow AMD Phenom II CPU the performance is perfectly acceptable. The list of features will satisfy most customers although the price is somewhat steep. Our only specific problem, apart from the quirky keyboard, is that dreadful mouse.

The fingerprint security seems out of place, especially since HP's own 'instant-on' operating system appears to circumvent it anyway. Given its pointlessness, the overall effect is to make the notebook more expensive than it needed to be. Even so, playing with media files is the principal past-time of vast numbers of domestic computer users, and everyone would secretly prefer a notebook over a desktop computer, so I can see a ready and willing market for the HP Pavilion dv6-3085ea.

The HP Pavilion dv6-3085ea offers pretty good performance for a machine of its size and price. But, if you need really great battery life, there are other laptops that will last longer away from the mains. If battery life is more important to you than graphics performance, make sure to also check out the HP Pavilion dm4-1050ea.

HP Pavilion DV6-3050TX Laptop
Source: Tech2.in.com English Archive.org version
Usually there's one such factor in a laptop that compels you to choose it, be it performance, aesthetics, affordability, build quality or portability. However, the HP DV6 3050TX is an all rounder at a great price. In terms of features and value for money, the one laptop that comes closest to this one is the Lenovo Y560. However, the Y560 is a lot cheaper (Rs 10,000 lesser), and has a mainstream Corei 5 CPU. Then again, the 3050TX is even better in terms of performance and looks. The long and short of it is, that if you're looking for an excellent multimedia laptop in the 60K price bracket, get the 3050TX.

The keyboard is decent enough, but it features a slightly odd format. The Shift and Control keys have been made small and indented slightly to make way for a row of hotkeys running vertically on the keyboard's left side. This can make typing awkward at times, restricting usability.

HP's Pavilion dv6-3160us may share some of the same look as the Envy but it certainly doesn't have quite the same feel. Performance and features are good especially the graphics and the company didn't skimp on the storage space. Boot times are a different matter thanks to all the preloaded software. Still, if you can't quite afford the Envy 14, this does make a suitable alternative.

The HP Pavilion dv6-3243cl is average; it neither excels in any particular area nor falls short in another. It has solid performance, a nice option of ports, and an added bonus of Costco's 2-year tech support. If you're looking for something a little more above average without sacrificing your screen real estate, upgrade to the Editors' Choice HP Pavilion dv7-4183cl ($999.99 list, 4 stars). It offers better performance and throws in a Blu-ray player, all for $200 extra. But if you're trying to stick to a $800 budget, the EC Acer Aspire AS5745-7247 (4.5 stars) will provide better performance and user experience, all for $600 (street).

It really comes down to whether you're willing to pay a small fortune for an SSD. While it dramatically improves the boot time and responsiveness on this notebook, the option adds $420 to the price tag. You could get a 1080p display instead and pay $1,334 instead of $1,604. We just can’t understand why HP opted against a full HD display on a 17in model with Blu-ray drive. It’s a shame because the sound quality is so good that a 1920 x 1080 screen would make it a near-perfect entertainment-focused laptop. It’s also slow in comparison to rivals sporting Intel’s Core i5 and i7 Sandy Bridge processors – but it’s harder to argue with the price. As long as you’re looking for a laptop to replace a desktop PC, and not to carry around with you, the HP is relatively good value for money.

The HP Pavilion series delivers good performance at a good price, and the dv7 is no exception. Its 17-inch display is crisp and clear, and you get good sound quality. Two USB 3.0 ports are a welcome addition, and should make backing up and working with media drives a lot easier (and a lot faster). Like the dv6, this is an ideal home laptop - even if its weight makes it more suitable for a desk. For sheer performance we much prefer the dv6, but a 17-inch system of this quality at this price is a bargain - as long as you’re happy with the heat, the limitations of the AMD/Radeon combination and the sheer size of the beast.

HP: Founded in 1939, the US company is a major server and printer manufacturer and one of the leading IT companies in the world. Until 2015, the company was called Hewlett-Packard Company. After a split, the computer division was renamed HP Inc.

In 2023, HP had an approximate market share of 22% of global PC sales, making it number 2 after Lenovo.

Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4530: About 27% slower clocked Mobility Radeon 4570. Power consumption 8-12 Watt according to AMD.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500MHD: Onboard (shared Memory) GPU built in the GM45, GE45 and GS45 chipset (Montevina). Because of two more shaders and a higher core clock, much faster than the old GMA X3100. Still not advisable for gamers (DirectX 10 games not playable or only with very low settings). The integrated video processor is able to help decode HD videos (AVC/VC-2/MPEG2) , e.g., for a fluent Blu-Ray playback with slow CPUs.

NVIDIA GeForce G 105M: Higher clocked 9300M GS and therefore a bit faster. Still manufactured in 65nm. Supports Hybrid-SLI with HybridPower and GeForceBoost (in conjunction with the right Nvidia chipset).

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) HD Graphics: Onboard graphics card that is built in the new Arrandale CPUs (Core i3 / i5 / i7 Dual Cores). Depending on the model and Turbo Boost, the GMA HD is clocked between 166 and 766 MHz.

ATI Radeon HD 4250: Onboard graphics card (in the RS880M chipset) for AMD processors with Avivo HD support and technically a higher clocked HD 4200.

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470: Entry level DirectX 11 chip with GDDR5 support but only 80 shader cores. Supports Eyefinity (up to 4 monitors) and 8-ch HD audio over HDMI. Performance on par with the old GeForce 8600M GT.

AMD Radeon HD 6370M: Renamed old HD 5470 with 80 shader processors and DirectX11 support.

Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650: The Mobility HD 4650 is based on the Desktop 4650 architecture, but features a lower clock rate of memory and core. Depending on the core clock (450-550MHz possible) and the used memory (DDR2, DDR3, GDDR3 with 600-800 MHz possible) the mobile 4650 can show a different performance. The current consumption of the chip alone ranges from 15-25W. Features Avivo HD video features.

NVIDIA GeForce GT 230M: The GeForce GT 230M features 48 shader cores as the 9700M GTS but only a 64 bit memory bus. Because of the 40nm process the power consumption is in the region of the GT 130M.

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650: Middle class DirectX 11 capable graphics card with a power consumption of about 15-20 Watt. Supports Eyevision (up to 6 monitors)

AMD Radeon HD 6470M: Entry to middle class graphics card based on the Seymore XT codename featuring the UVD3 video processor.

Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.

AMD Radeon HD 6770M:

Fastest card of the 6600M/6700M series with GDDR5 memory, UVD3 and Eyefinity+ support. Is the immediate successor to the HD 5770 with more cores and higher clock rates

» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.

AMD Turion X2: The Turion X2 (without 64) is based on the Turion X2 Ultra, but has only 1024 MB L2 Cache and is therefore slower (performance compareable to the old Turion 64 X2). Because of new parts from the K10 architecture, the CPU should be more energy efficient.

RM-75:

Griffin based entry-level dual core processor. The cores are still based on the old K8 architecture (memory controller is newer).

Intel Core 2 Duo: This is the Core Duo and Core Solo successor with a longer pipeline and 5-20% more speed without more power consumption. As an addition to the Core Duo design there exists a fourth decoder, an amplified SSE-unit and an additional arithmetical logical unit (ALU).

The Core 2 Duo for laptops is identical to the desktop Core 2 Duo processors but the notebook-processors work with lower voltages (0.95 to 1188 Volt) and a lower Frontside bus clock (1066 vs 667 MHz). The performance of equally clocked notebooks is 20-25% lower than Desktop PCs because of the lower Frontside bus clock and the slower hard disks.

P7450: Entry level Core 2 Duo processor with 3 MB Level 2 Cache and due to the 25 Watt TDP also suited for 13" laptops.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.

720QM: The Core i7-720QM is the slowes Core i7 Quad Core in 2009 and clocks between 1.6 and 2.8 GHz (due to the Turbo Mode). Therefore, it combines the advantages of a slow quad core CPU with a fast single core one. Compared to the faster Core i7 mobile CPUs, the 720QM only features 6MB L3 Cache.

2630QM: Fast Quad-core processor based on the Sandy Bridge architecture with an integrated graphics card and dual-channel DDR3 memory controller.

2670QM: Fast Quad-core processor clocked at 2.2-3.1 GHz based on the Sandy Bridge architecture with an integrated graphics card and dual-channel DDR3 memory controller.

AMD Athlon II:

M300:

Entry level dual core CPU by AMD which features an integrated memory controller (400MHz DDR2) and is based (partially?) on the K10 core. The performance should be compareable to an old Merom based 1.8 Core 2 Duo. The CPU supports 64 Bit and Virtualization.

M320:

Entry level dual core CPU by AMD which features an integrated memory controller (400MHz DDR2) and is based only partially on the K10 core. The performance should be compareable to a 1.8 Celeron Dual Core. The CPU supports 64 Bit and Virtualization.

P320: Entry level dual core processor for 13"+ laptops featuring a DDR3 memory controller.

Intel Core i3:

350M:

The Core i3-350M is technically a Core i5-430M without the Turbo Boost overlocking feature. Therefore, it always clocks with max. 2.26 GHz (of course Speedstep is included). Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (GMA HD) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.

330M:

The Core i3-330M is a slower clocked 350M and therefore also lacks the Turbo Boost feature and clocks with max. 2.13 GHz. Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (GMA HD 3150) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.

Intel Core i5:

430M:

The Core i5-430M is a middle class dual core CPU that features only 3 MB L3 Cache (compared to the I7-640M) and clocks between 2.26-2.53 GHz (Turbo Mode). Furthermore, VT-d, trusted Execution and AES features are missing in the 430M. Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (Intel HD Graphics with 500-733 MHz) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.

450M: Should be similar to the Core i5-520M but without AES functions.

460M: The Core i5-460M has only 3 MB L3 Cache (compared to the I7-620M) and clocks between 2.53-2.8 GHz (Turbo Mode). Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (GMA HD) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.

AMD Turion II Ultra:

M620:

Entry - Middle class dual core CPU by AMD which features an integrated memory controller (400MHz DDR2) and is based (partially?) on the K10 core (desktop Athlon II). The performance should be compareable to a 2.0-2.2GHz Core 2 Duo.

M640:

Middle class dual core CPU by AMD which features an integrated memory controller (400MHz DDR2) and is based (partially?) on the K10 core (desktop Athlon II). The performance should be compareable to a 2.2-2.3GHz Core 2 Duo.

AMD Turion II:

M500:

Entry level dual core CPU by AMD which features an integrated memory controller (400MHz DDR2) and is based (partially?) on the K10 core. The performance should be compareable to a 2.0 Celeron Dual Core / Pentium.

P520: Entry level Dual-Core CPU with a TDP of 25 Watt. Offers a similar performance as a 2.1 - 2.3 GHz Core 2 Duo with 2 MB Level 2 Cache.

M540: Entry level dual core CPU by AMD which features an integrated memory controller (400MHz DDR2) and is based (partially?) on the K10 core. The performance should be most of the times compareable to a 2.0 Celeron Dual Core / Pentium (sometimes even to a 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo).

P540: Entry level Dual-Core CPU with a TDP of 25 Watt. Offers a similar performance as a 2.1 - 2.3 GHz Core 2 Duo with 2 MB Level 2 Cache.

AMD Phenom II X4:

N930: Mobile Quad-Core CPU with 2 GHz clock speed. Because of the missing Level 3 Cache and no Turbo, the N930 is not well suited for games.

P920: Slow clocked quad core CPU for mid size laptops (due to the 25 W TDP). Single threaded applications and games suffer from the low core speed.

N950: Mobile Quad-Core CPU with 2.1 GHz clock speed. Because of the missing Level 3 Cache and no Turbo, the N930 is not well suited for games.

AMD Phenom II X3:

N830: Mobile 3-core laptop processor based on the desktop Athlon II X3.

Intel Pentium:

P6000: The Pentium P6000 is an entry level CPU based on the Arrandale core. Compared to the Celeron P4500, the P6000 offers a bit better performance due to the faster System Bus and an increased Level 3 cache. However, VT-x is not available for the P6000.

P6200: The Pentium P6200 is an entry level CPU based on the Arrandale core. Compared to the Core i3-330M it does not feature HyperThreading leading to a slower multi-threaded performance.

AMD Phenom II X2:

N620: Mobile Dual-Core CPU based on the desktop Athlon II X2 due to the missing level 3 cache. Due to the fast clock speed, the N620 should be located in the upper mid range of laptop CPUs.

N660: Mobile Dual-Core CPU based on the desktop Athlon II X2 due to the missing level 3 cache. Due to the fast clock speed, the N660 should be located in the  mid range of laptop CPUs (Core i3-370M).

2.4 kg:

3.4 kg:

A laptop with this weight is comparatively heavy and less designed for mobility than for use at the desk. Therefore, the devices tend to shine less with battery life than with a large screen and higher performance.

75.14%: This rating is not earth-shattering. This rating must actually be seen as average, since there are about as many devices with worse ratings as better ones. A purchase recommendation can only be seen with a lot of goodwill, unless it is about websites that generally rate strictly.
