There are only one or two very small things we'd change about the dm4: one being the touchpad position; and the second being the somewhat hopeful notion of adding switchable graphics. Such ideas aside, it's an absolute corker of a laptop considering its accessible price.

One thing we're less certain about, however, is the touchpad. HP appears to have adopted the 'almost' Apple-esque integrated touchpad buttons first seen on the Envy 15, which were far from a resounding success. Hopefully it has ironed out the issues now: we'll see. Moreover, if HP is to go down this route we'd have preferred to see it add the much more impressive four point multi-touch, single click touchpad that Synaptics recently introduced.

It continues to be a real shame that the one real issue we have with HP's laptops continues to be something we consider to be fairly standard and simple technology these days. Honestly, we don't need anything fancy when it comes to a touchpad -- just a large pad and two comfortable buttons. Other than its flaky navigation input, the $904 system – though it's a bit overpriced compared to the competition -- packs just the right balance of style, power and endurance. We much prefer the dm4's aesthetic to comparable systems like Dell's Inspiron 15 and Gateway's offerings. But of course, at the end of the day what good is all that if you can't push the cursor from one side of the screen without a problem?

The middle-of-the-road multimedia laptops that come out of HP have always been excellent examples of the style. They typically bring some upscale design buzz--but not too much in the way of extra features or components--while keeping prices down. HP's latest multimedia system, the Pavilion dm4, is a powerful, slick-looking package--but some competitors in the same price range offer more features for less.

Like the rest of the industry, HP has taken a huge liking to metals. So much so, that its entire line of laptops (netbooks not included) has been updated with this design material. The HP Pavilion dm4 ($905 direct) is not only covered in them, but it's one of the lightest laptops in the 14-inch category, and yet it toppled the competition in speed tests. Its major flaw is the gesture-enabled touchpad, which proved to be more bothersome than helpful.

HP got most things right with the Pavilion dm4. It has a sophisticated design, strong performance, and good battery life. However, this notebook’s finicky touchpad makes it less of a pleasure to use than we had hoped. For now, we say try it out at a store first, if possible. You should also check out the $899 Toshiba Satellite E205, which performs almost as well and comes with Intel’s Wireless Display technology and the 14-inch Lenovo IdeaPad Y460 ($1,094), adds muscle with discrete graphics. Overall, though, the dm4 is a solid choice. If and when HP issues a driver update, we’ll likely give the dm4 a more enthusiastic recommendation.

Metals are the favored materials when it comes to laptop design, and HP is not shy about using them. Its entire line of laptops (netbooks not included) will be updated with this material by the time summer hits, starting with the HP Pavilion dm4-1063cl ($899 list). It's identical to the Pavilion dm4 ($905 direct, ) in looks and its featherweight characteristics. Of the two, the dm4-1063cl, available at Costco, is less battery efficient, although you get a bigger hard drive and gaming benefits (with switchable graphics) that should make up for the difference.

HP Pavilion dm4x Review
Source: Student Buying Guide English
Students should take a close look at the HP dm4x laptop as an option for use as an important academic tool. It’s got everything you need for your academic computing needs and then some nice extras. First of all the design is very appealing so fashion conscious students will approve. It’s not just a pretty face though, the dm4x is built with sturdy metal materials and beneath the hood the second generation Intel Core i5 processor will provide more than enough power to tackle multi-tasking, frequent application switching and smooth video playback. An option for dedicated graphics with 1GB of memory can make the dm4x a good choice for engineering students as well. Most importantly for students this laptop is very portable, weighing in at 4.3lbs, and the battery life of about 6 hours on a standard battery is enough to last through a few lectures without being plugged in. If you need more battery life there are battery upgrade options, something you don’t get with other laptops such as the Apple MacBook Pro. Finally, the price in the mid $700’s is a very good one for what you get with the dm4x. Getting the most features and best quality for a laptop you hope will last you four years of college is a tough buying decision, the HP Pavilion dm4x passes the test for meeting student needs in a laptop and providing quality with value so it should certainly be on your shortlist of laptops to consider with this important buying decision.

The only downside is the lack of value for money. Although the £899 price tag will get you a strong audio performance (plus a damn good laptop), there are more affordable models around, ablbeit minus Dr Dre's input.

HP's Pavilion range was never going to offer the same 'wow factor' as its premium Envy line and we couldn't pick out its previous dm4 Pavilion in a line up. But HP's new dm4-3000ea Pavilion Beats Edition is far from anonymous.

Stylish Beats Audio. The 14-inch Pavilion dm4 Beats Edition is the most stylish Beats Audio notebook to date.. but how does it perform in a market that is increasingly favoring similarly-priced Ultrabooks?

HP dm4 beats Audio – Review
Source: Gadgetmix English
HP is ever keen to talk up its Dr. Dre Beats Audio sound systems, so it comes as no surprise that the company has now named a notebook after its Beats Audio credentials. For a mid-ranger, the HP dm4 notebook packs in some good features – it’s stylish, capable, has good battery life, and offers excellent audio. Hard to beat for $900.

70% HP Pavilion dm4 Review: Beats Audio Not Just a Marketing Ploy
Source: Notebookreview.com English
If you're in the market for a 14-inch multimedia notebook, we urge you to consider the HP Pavilion dm4 Beats Edition. Marketed by HP as the ultimate audio noteook, it really was able to deliver exceptional audio quality - even using typical tiny earbuds. The dm4 isn't just about the audio, though ... our review unit was also able to deliver good performance at this price point. It can definitely compete against all of the other mid-range 14-inch multimedia notebooks in that regard without breaking your wallet.

For a high-end midsize Windows laptop, HP's Envy line (starting at $1,049) is probably the first place you should look. The only real knock against this chic-looking 14-inch multimedia laptop is its plastic body; other than that, this is a great midrange laptop with a unique, eye-catching design.

As with the Envy 14, HP took a great consumer notebook in the Pavilion dm4 and gave it a slick finish. Additionally, HP made some noticeable improvements under the hood, including a faster processor and hybrid hard drive. Those who want more powerful graphics should look to the $999 Dell XPS 14z, which also has pretty good audio to boot. More budget-conscious shoppers should consider the regular $649 dm4, which also boasts Beats Audio minus the snazzy design. Overall, though, the HP Pavilion dm4 Beats Edition is a solid choice for consumers searching for a stylish and highly portable multimedia notebook.

HP is proud to have teamed up with Beats Audio to make this Pavilion dm4 Beats Edition laptop. The HP Pavilion dm4 Beats Edition laptop gives a good level of performance for the money, as well as a nice design and finish, and a decent battery life. 100% HP dm4t Beats Edition Notebook Review: Branding Gone Wild
Source: PC Perspective English
The dm4t Beats Edition is an example of a laptop with performance that outpaces the quality of its chassis. $1169 is an entirely reasonable price for a laptop with this level of performance, but for that price, consumers expect a certain level of design and build quality. The dm4t Beats Edition can’t deliver, so we can’t recommend it. HP’s own lineup makes this laptop appear a bit irrelevant – the HP Envy 15 and HP Folio 13 are in this price bracket and unlike the dm4t, they have a design that can match their performance.

At Rs. 53,200, including taxes and everything, the HP dm4-3010tx is a good buy, if build quality and looks are high on your list, along with performance, of course. The dm4 is an all-rounder. Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) HD Graphics: Onboard graphics card that is built in the new Arrandale CPUs (Core i3 / i5 / i7 Dual Cores). Depending on the model and Turbo Boost, the GMA HD is clocked between 166 and 766 MHz.

Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5450: Entry level DirectX 11 graphics card with a similar clock speed (and performance) as the HD 4570 but at a lower power consumption.

AMD Radeon HD 6370M: Renamed old HD 5470 with 80 shader processors and DirectX11 support.

Intel HD Graphics 3000: Integrated graphics card in the Intel Sandy Bridge processors (Core ix-2xxx). The HD 3000 is the faster (internally GT2 called) version with 12 Execution Units (EUs).

AMD Radeon HD 6470M: Entry to middle class graphics card based on the Seymore XT codename featuring the UVD3 video processor.

Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.

AMD Radeon HD 7470M: Based on the old Seymore XT chip and therefore a renamed version of the Radeon HD 6490M (perhaps with slightly changed clock rates).

14.0: 14 inch display size is a mixture between the small formats of subnotebooks and the 15 inch standard display. The reason why so many people like displays with medium size is, that this size is not exhausting for the eyes, does not need too much energy and the laptops can be kept quite compact.

The reason why so many people like displays with medium size is, that this size is not exhausting for the eyes, does not need too much energy and the laptops can be kept quite compact.

15.6: 15 inch display-variants are the standard and are used for more than the half of all notebooks. 15.4 inch display with 16:10 are the standard for notebook displays.
