With the HP G42-243CL-B, you get a relatively light, 14-inch laptop and a multi-function printer bundle at an affordable price. The 2-year Costco warranty is a plus, but there are better performing laptops out there in this price range.

Either the Gateway NV50A02u or the Dell Inspiron IM5030-874B3D would make a better cost-saving computer choice than the HP G42-415DX; and if you want something with considerably more power (and better battery life), our Editors' Choice, the Acer Aspire AS5742-6475 ($599.99 list, 4 dots), will run you only $70 more than the HP. You may have to sacrifice some design elements for the increased potential, but it might be worth it as they're about all that give the G42-415DX any discernible distinction.

HP: Founded in 1939, the US company is a major server and printer manufacturer and one of the leading IT companies in the world. Until 2015, the company was called Hewlett-Packard Company. After a split, the computer division was renamed HP Inc.
In 2023, HP had an approximate market share of 22% of global PC sales, making it number 2 after Lenovo.
Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.
ATI Radeon HD 4250: Onboard graphics card (in the RS880M chipset) for AMD processors with Avivo HD support and technically a higher clocked HD 4200.
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470: Entry level DirectX 11 chip with GDDR5 support but only 80 shader cores. Supports Eyefinity (up to 4 monitors) and 8-ch HD audio over HDMI. Performance on par with the old GeForce 8600M GT.
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) HD Graphics: Onboard graphics card that is built in the new Arrandale CPUs (Core i3 / i5 / i7 Dual Cores). Depending on the model and Turbo Boost, the GMA HD is clocked between 166 and 766 MHz.
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5430: DirectX 11 chip with the codename Park LP, slowest clocked HD 5400 series chip.

AMD Turion II:
M520: Entry level dual core CPU by AMD which features an integrated memory controller (400MHz DDR2) and is based (partially?) on the K10 core. The performance should be most of the times compareable to a 2.0 Celeron Dual Core / Pentium (sometimes even to a 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo).
Intel Core i5:
460M: The Core i5-460M has only 3 MB L3 Cache (compared to the I7-620M) and clocks between 2.53-2.8 GHz (Turbo Mode). Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (GMA HD) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.
520M:
The Core i5-520M has only 3 MB L3 Cache (compared to the I7-640M) and clocks between 2.4-2.93 GHz (Turbo Mode). Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (GMA HD 3150) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.
AMD Athlon II:
P340: Entry level dual core processor for 13"+ laptops featuring a DDR3 memory controller.

14.00:
14 inch display size represents a middle ground between the small subnotebook formats and the screens of the standard 15 inch laptops.
The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, provides good resolutions with usable detail sizes, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact.
In the past, 14-inch devices were very rare, but now they are the standard for laptops after the 15-inchers.

65.2%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
