On paper, the specifications are impressive for the price, but the cut corners are obvious in the keyboard, touchpad and screen. A solid laptop then, but we’d hope for more to replace our desktop full time.

HP Envy TouchSmart 15-j003sg

The HP Envy TouchSmart 15-j003sg is aimed at gamers who need to keep a tight rein on their spending. The most important aspect is the specs, and it delivers with a quad-core Intel Core i7-4700MQ CPU, 8GB of RAM, and the Nvidia GeForce GT 740M graphics processor with 2GB of VRAM. While this may not be top of the line out there in the market, it will certainly allow users to play most demanding games, albeit at lower settings. For the price, this is the best one can expect, which is exactly what the machine aims to be.

The 15 inch touch screen is a full HD affair, and the only real let down of the specs lies in the 5400 rpm HDD. A solid state hard drive would have been ideal, but at this price, who cares? The onboard speakers produce decent audio, and the keyboard is comfortable to use. It is a little on the heavy side at 2.5 kg and it is not slim enough to be classified an ultrabook. It looks good. The body does not feel premium, yet decently sturdy. The battery life is also nothing less than predictably lousy, lasting approximately 3 hours of moderate use. At the end of the day, if one is looking for a gaming laptop to fit a small budget - the HP Envy TouchSmart 15-j003sg is awesome.

If you want Windows 8 then this is an excellent overall product, I have detailed the only weaknesses I can find. Windows 8 needs touch and this of course has it, it is nice to get a full 1920x1080 screen on a notebook. It is a little heavier because of the touch screen but as stated if you are using it on a Desktop its good and you do have the option to transport.

I wanted to like HP’s ENVY TouchSmart 15, I really did. HP built up some real brand loyalty in my head, thanks to a couple of exemplary ENVY models back when the name was young and fresh. Brand loyalty can’t compete with experience and testing, however, and the latest ENVY really let me down.

The HP TouchSmart 15 is not particularly portable, even by the standards of other 15.6-inch laptops. However, its high-quality screen and speaker system make it an excellent entertainment machine for use at home, while the i7 processor provides desktop performance levels for even the most demanding graphics and video applications.

Graphics performance was only average at best. Playing today's 3D games will require you to dial down the graphics settings in order to get a playable experience. Non-gamer users will be pleased with streaming HD media playback and other similar non-gaming tasks.

The TouchSmart 15 is potentially a great option for creative pros, or someone looking for a premium entertainment laptop that can do games and Full HD movies. It's a shame this its most notable issues are in such important areas, but they're by no means fatal flaws. HP has struck a great balance of quality, features and price here. If the problems sound like the kind of things you can live with, we think it's a great option.

80% HP Envy TouchSmart 15t review: When gaming is a priority, but cash flow is tight
Source: PC World English
HP doesn’t market the Envy TouchSmart 15t as an Ultrabook, because Intel won’t allow a manufacturer to label a laptop as such if it measures more than 0.9 inch thick. This machine is quite stout at 1.18 inches. It’s also very heavy, tipping the scales at 5.6 pounds. Battery life is the final, less-than-impressive metric: In our tests it petered out in just 3 hours, 19 minutes.

This 15-inch laptop is at the very top of HP's price range. We don't understand why HP chose to use such a low-quality screen on one of its most high-end laptops. Add to that the similar quality in the audio components, and you have a pretty forgettable computer.

60% HP Envy TouchSmart 15t-j100 Quad Edition
Source: IT Reviews English
The HP Envy TouchSmart 15t-j100 Quad Editon ($1,058.99 direct) is a multimedia powerhouse desktop replacement laptop. This is the one you want if you need to replace a $2,000 desktop you purchased back in 2010, and it’s starting to feel slow. The HP TouchSmart 15t-j100 Quad Edition gives you the power of a multimedia desktop in a semi-portable laptop. It's a good way to get your toes wet in the Windows 8.1 pool.

70% HP Envy TouchSmart 15t-j100 Quad Edition
Source: PC Mag English
The HP TouchSmart 15t-j100 Quad Edition is a serviceable power user laptop. It can speedily run through the tasks that you'd need a high powered processor and graphics for, like video and photo work, graphics arts, and light gaming. However, our current Editors' Choice for midrange desktop replacement laptops the Asus N550JV-DB72T has all this, plus better sound, 3D gaming performance, nicer screen with a wider viewing angle, and is only about $20 more expensive. This means that the TouchSmart 15t-j100 is good, but not good enough to knock the Asus off its perch. The TouchSmart 15t-j100 should be on your short list of systems to try out, but there are ultimately better choices out there for battery life, portability, and power.

With these GPUs you are able to play modern and demanding games fluently at medium detail settings and HD resolution.

NVIDIA GeForce GT 740M: Mid-range graphics card of the GeForce GT 700M series. Based on the Kepler architecture and manufactured by TSMC in a 28nm process.

» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.

4700MQ: Haswell-based quad-core processor clocked at 2.4 GHz with Turbo Boost support up to 3.4 GHz. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 4600 GPU and a dual channel DDR3 memory controller.

15.6: 15 inch display-variants are the standard and are used for more than the half of all notebooks. 15.4 inch display with 16:10 are the standard for notebook displays. However nowadays, more and more 16:9 displays with 15.6 inch appear. The reason why so many people like displays with medium size is, that this size is not exhausting for the eyes, does not need too much energy and the laptops can be kept quite compact.

» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.

2.5 kg:

This notebook is lighter than the average of all notebooks. It is too heavy for sub-notebooks. 14 inch displays are normal for this class of weight.

2.6 kg:

72.31%: This rating is bad. Most notebooks are better rated. This is not a recommendation for purchase.
