HP EliteBook 8470 Series

HP EliteBook 8470p

While everyone else is concentrating on Ultrabooks and tablets, HP seems to be keen in updating their business line laptops. The EliteBook 8470 is a typical business class laptop with a chassis that shouts ‘ab-normal’. For a start, it weighs 2.1 kg and has dimensions of a 5 year old laptop. The case feels tough enough to withstand any kind of hard-core usage and from some angles, it does look stunning.

Just like its predecessors, the Elitebook comes in a variety of options and configurations. However, since it is a business class laptop, even the lowest configuration would be enough to beat your regular laptop in terms of power and price. Connectivity isn’t a compromise for this beast. It comes with 2 USB 3.0 ports and 2 USB 2.0 ports, one of which doubles as an e-Sata port. Despite being a business laptop, the Elitebook comes with a AMD Radeon HD 7570M-DDR5 graphic card and an optional SSD to boost performance. It also comes with a DVD-RW drive.

The HP Elitebook 8470 is a perfect business laptop but is very specifically designed to serve users who require stronger build quality. It will fit well in the industrial sector.

87% Review HP EliteBook 8470p Notebook | Notebookcheck
Business and more? About a year ago we put the predecessor model, the 8460p, to the test. The manufacturer HP now introduces the EliteBook 8470p as the successor, although it has the same old look, the internal components have been revamped.
70% HP EliteBook 8470p review: business notebook with tons of power and features

HP's EliteBook 8470p offers stacks of built-in features, security options and connections to the past. It's a solidly built business machine with great performance and it feels comfortable to use. We just wish it had a higher resolution screen and perhaps a bit more RAM for the price.

As you can see, it's a very well stocked machine, which is what contributes to its overall heavy weight, despite being a manageable 14in form factor. It's a worthy laptop to consider if you want great performance while on-the-go and can't stand the thought of getting a full-on workstation notebook. Additionally, its keyboard, battery life, and matte screen are also positive points.

These days, store shelves and online outlets are overflowing with super-thin ultrabooks. Corporate customers looking for a compact, rugged laptop with good looks that's easy to upgrade should consider the EliteBook 8470p. Just note that if you want stellar battery life, you'll definitely want to splurge on an extra battery.

The HP EliteBook 8470p is an overall good performer, so much so that it seems somewhat reductive to pigeonhole it as simply a business-class laptop. It's armed with enough oomph to double as a multimedia powerhouse and, to a lesser extent, gaming rig. Aside from its impressively engineered chassis, however, it doesn't offer much in terms of performance to distinguish it from lighter and less expensive systems, like the Lenovo IdeaPad Y580. Ultimately, it's a good choice for anyone looking for a rugged road companion. For everyone else, though, the Editors' Choice Lenovo Y580 is still the system to checking out.

Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.

AMD Radeon HD 7570M: Same chip as the Radeon HD 6630M, but only 64 bit memory interface and only 5 SIMDs (=400 Shader) activated. Differently clocked versions with DDR3 oder GDDR5 memory.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.

3520M: Fastest Ivy-Bridge-based Dual-Core, 2,9 - 3,6 GHz core clock
