Google Shop opens in London

First Google Shop retail store in London opens, two more will follow later this year
Google Shop London
The first Google Shop in London offers Nexus smartphones and tablets, Chromebooks, Chromecasts and Android Wear smartwatches. Two similar stores are expected to open later this year as well.

Earlier this week, Google opened up its first retail store in London. Simply known as "the Google shop," it is located in Currys PC World, on the tech hub of Tottenham Court Road. According to James Elias, the U.K. marketing director for Google, "The pace of innovation of the devices we all use is incredible, yet the way we buy them has remained the same for years. With the Google Shop, we want to offer people a place where they can play, experiment and learn about all of what Google has to offer."

Next to the notorious Nexus family of Android phones and tablets, the Google Shop offers Chromebook laptops, Chromecasts, but plans to do more than just selling devices. The official press release mentions "regular classes and events for the public," with Virtual Space Camps that will teach children the basics of coding, while the Open House events will target teachers, who get the chance "to keep up to speed on the free educational tools on offer from Google."

In addition to the above, Google Store visitors will be able to enjoy the following:

  • Portal, a surround screen installation that uses Google Earth to "fly" around the globe
  • Doodle Wall for graffiti artists who can paint their personal view of the iconic Google logo
  • Chromecast Pod that offers Google Play Movies, YouTube content and more, all cast via a Chromecast dongle

Google plans to open two more similar stores in London later this year, located in Currys PC World’s Fulham and Thurrock Megastores.
