Examining the latest crop of £1,000 consumer laptops suggests that a compromise typically has to be made. Among the many choices are Ultrabooks that offer responsive everyday performance in a sleek, ultra-portable form factor. However, if it's gaming potential that's important, you're often required to forego portability, subtlety and style in favour of something that offers more bang for the buck.

Put it all together and you have a system with no performance weak points that can turn its hand to just about anything. Video encoding on the go. Web browsing in the airport lounge. A machine you occasionally use to power a home cinema rig. And yes, gaming. What it's not, however, is satisfying as a pure gaming machine. If that's what you want, it's simple. Buy something with better graphics. On the other hand, if you're after a great all-round desktop replacement, stick the Gigabyte P2742G on your shortlist. It's well worth a look.

Lower prices in gaming laptops are almost always accompanied by reduced performance, and the Gigabyte P2742G-CF1 is no exception. Aside from the lower performance scores, however, the P2742G-CF1 still offers playable performance at medium graphics settings, and lasts longer than more expensive gaming rigs, making it a good choice for the gamer that prizes affordability and portability over raw performance.

While the slightly more expensive Asus G75VW-DH72 remains our Editors' Choice for mid-range gaming laptop due to its better graphics performance, the Gigabyte P2742G-CF1 is still worth a look.

The Gigabyte P2742G-CF1 has a lot going for it. It offers Core i7 processing power, a gorgeous 17.3-inch full HD display, a Blu-ray drive, and great battery life. Moreover, it's relatively affordable for a big-screen gaming laptop. However, you'll have to ease up on resolution and quality settings in order to play the latest and greatest DirectX 11 games.

Gigabyte: GIGABYTE Technology is a Taiwan-based manufacturer of computer hardware products best known for its motherboards. Established in 1986, its major customers include custom boutique PC manufacturers such as Alienware. Secondary lines in the company's product portfolio include complete PCs, laptops, optical drives, LCD monitors, keyboards, mice, cooling components, mobile phones and high end mobile phone products (PDA phone, TV phone etc.), networking equipment, power supplies, and a line of barebone mid and full sized ATX computer cases. Gigabyte laptop reviews are rare and the global laptop market share low.

With these GPUs you are able to play modern and demanding games fluently at medium detail settings and HD resolution.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660M:

High-end graphics solution as part of the 600M series and the slowest enthusiast GTX model.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.

3630QM: An Ivy Bridge-based quad-core processor clocked at 2.4 GHz with Turbo Boost support up to 3.4 GHz. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 4000 GPU and a dual channel DDR3 memory controller.
