Fujitsu Lifebook A3510 review: An affordable office laptop with a maintenance flap
With the Lifebook A3510, Fujitsu offers an entry-level 15.6-inch business laptop. It belongs to the almost extinct category of laptops that offer an optical drive and a maintenance flap. In combination with the fairly attractive price level (450€, ~$502 with Windows 10 Pro and 350€, ~$390 without the Windows operating system), the device should also generate some interest from private users. The competitors include devices such as the Dell Latitude 3510, the Lenovo V15-ADA, and the HP 255 G7.

Case and Equipment - The Lifebook A supports Power Delivery
Fujitsu uses a matte black plastic case. The palm rest has a rippled texture, and the back of the lid and bottom have a roughened surface. Overall, the case is not very prone to fingerprints. The gaps are minimal and there are no noticeable sharp edges. However, the base unit and lid can be warped significantly. A maintenance flap gives easy access to the battery, SSD, and working memory.
Contrary to the information from the Fujitsu advertising material, the Lifebook doesn't weigh almost 2 kg (~4.4 lb) but only 1.8 kg (~4 lb; or 1.67 kg, ~3.7 lb without the DVD drive) - we weighed the device ourselves.
The Fujitsu laptop offers three USB-A ports (USB 3.2 Gen 1) and one USB-C port (USB 3.2 Gen 2) that supports Power Delivery and DisplayPort via USB-C. So together with the HDMI port, the A3510 offers two video ports. The SD storage card reader belongs to the faster representatives of its kind (reference card: AV PRO SD 128 GB V60).
The WLAN module includes an Intel chip (Wireless-AC 9560) that supports the 802.11a/b/g/n/ac standards. The transfer rates measured under optimal conditions (no other WLAN devices in close proximity and close distance between laptop and server PC) turn out very good.
Note: We used the most current Intel WiFi driver (Version 22.70.0.6) that was available in the download area of the Fujitsu website. The newest driver (Version 22.100.1.1) that could be downloaded from the Intel website is not completely trouble free with our test unit and produces transfer rates that are significantly worse (about 1/10).

Linux instead of Windows
The equipment configuration of the A3510 that we have here is also available without the Windows operating system (FPC04902BP, about 350€, ~$390). In this case, Linux would offer itself as the operating system, and Ubuntu 20.04.03 LTS (64 bits) can be installed without any problems. Most of the hardware is setup automatically, with the exception of several function keys (such as the touchpad on/off toggle key). The keys for volume and brightness adjustment work, and the same goes for the airplane mode key.
Input Devices - A3510 without a keyboard illumination
The chiclet keyboard is not illuminated, and its slightly roughened keys have a short stroke and clear pressure point. While typing, the keyboard has some minimal give, but this did not turn out to be annoying. Overall, Fujitsu delivers a keyboard here that is suitable for everyday typing tasks.
The smooth surface of the multi-touch capable touchpad (~9.9 x 6.1 cm, ~3.9 x 2.4 in) facilitates sliding of the fingers. The touchpad also responds to inputs in the corners. The two separate mouse keys have a short stroke and clear pressure point.
Display - The Fujitsu A3510 only brings a dark IPS panel
While the matte 15.6-inch display (1920 x 1080 pixels) delivers a very good contrast (1982:1), the brightness turns out too low (209.1 cd/m²). We consider values beyond 300 cd/m² as good. A positive point is the fact that we did not notice any PWM flickering.

* ... smaller is better
In the state of delivery, the display offers a decent color reproduction. The colors still deviate slightly from the target, but this is not noticeable. A calibration will bring only some small improvements. The display is unable to cover the AdobeRGB (41%), sRGB (59%), and DCI-P3 (40%) color spaces.

The IPS panel offers stable viewing angles and can be read from any position. Outdoors, the contents of the display can be recognized when the sun isn't too bright. Otherwise, the low display brightness will make this impossible.
Performance - Ice Lake onboard
With the Lifebook A3510, Fujitsu delivers a 15.6-inch business laptop that is targeted for running office and Internet applications.
Test Conditions
The benchmarks were run using the "Highest Performance" Windows power profile. The power limits of the CPU are 15 Watts (PL1) and 50 Watts (PL2). A manufacturer-specific "Fujitsu Eco Settings" Windows power profile is also available, but this was not used here.
Processor
The Core i3-1005G1 dual-core processor (Ice Lake) runs at a basic clock speed of 1.2 GHz, which can be increased via Turbo up to 3.4 GHz. Hyperthreading (two threads per core) is supported.
The processor begins the multi-thread test of the Cinebench R15 benchmark running briefly at 3.4 GHz, before the clock speed drops to between 2.9 and 3 GHz. It runs through the single-thread test at 1.5 to 3.4 GHz.
We evaluate whether the CPU Turbo is used constantly during mains operation by running the multi-thread test of the Cinebench R15 benchmark in a constant loop for at least 30 minutes. The Turbo runs constantly at a high level.

System Performance
The system runs smoothly and quickly. We did not encounter any problems. The processor used offers sufficient performance for office and Internet applications. The results in the PC-Mark benchmarks turn out decent.
Fujitsu leaves part of the performance potential unused, since the working memory only runs in single-channel mode. However, you could activate dual-channel mode by inserting a second working memory module into the laptop.

Graphics Card
Intel's UHD Graphics G1 graphics core places in the lower third of the GPU performance chart. The GPU is able to constantly run at a maximum speed of 900 MHz, which is shown by our "The Witcher 3" test. The A3510 is not a gaming laptop, but the built-in hardware is still able to reproduce some games smoothly - in low resolutions and at low quality settings. Games with moderate demands on the hardware allow for more.
The benchmark results remain significantly below the average measured until now for the GPU used here. The reason for this can be found quickly: the working memory only runs in single-channel mode. Activating the dual-channel mode (by inserting a second working memory module) would lead to an increase in the benchmark results as well as the frame rates while gaming.

Emissions and Power Management - The Fujitsu laptop hardly heats up
Noise Emissions
During everyday operation (Office, Internet), the fan often remains turned off and there is silence. Under load, the noise level increases during the stress test as well as under a medium load range to about 39 dB (A), which is a value that is too high for a simple office laptop. This is reflected in a constant whirring of the fan. There are no other annoying noises that are noticeable.
The BIOS of the laptop allows you to adjust the fan behavior. You can choose from the "Normal" and "Silent" options. By default, the "Silent" option is active, so this was used while running the test.

Temperature
We cannot really speak about any heat development in the Lifebook. Even under full load, the case temperatures remain at a very moderate level. The CPU temperatures give no reason for concern.
At the beginning of the stress test (with Prime95 and Furmark running for at least one hour), the CPU and GPU reach clock speeds of 3.4 GHz and 900 MHz respectively. After this, the clock speeds drop to 1.2 GHz and 800 MHz, remaining at this level for the remainder of the test.
(+) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 34.4 °C / 94 F, compared to the average of 34.2 °C / 94 F, ranging from 21.2 to 62.5 °C for the class Office.
(+) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 30.9 °C / 88 F, compared to the average of 36.7 °C / 98 F
(+) In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 25.2 °C / 77 F, compared to the device average of 29.5 °C / 85 F.
(+) The palmrests and touchpad are cooler than skin temperature with a maximum of 24.8 °C / 76.6 F and are therefore cool to the touch.
(+) The average temperature of the palmrest area of similar devices was 27.7 °C / 81.9 F (+2.9 °C / 5.3 F).

Power Consumption
Considering the hardware equipment, it is not surprising that the Lifebook is not extremely power hungry. The maximum power consumption of almost 53 Watts is reached briefly at the beginning of the stress test. During the remainder of the test, this value drops sharply. The laptop runs through our Witcher 3 test with a constant power consumption. With a rating of 65 Watts, the power supply is sufficiently large.

Verdict - An affordable office laptop
At a weight of only 1.8 kg (~4 lb; or 1.67 kg, ~3.7 lb without the DVD drive), Fujitsu's office laptop is one of the lighter 15.6-inch laptops. However, it is not a particularly mobile device, since a battery charge will only last for a WLAN runtime of barely 6.5 hours. While this is not very good, at the price level of the A3510, it is quite a normal value.
Not the same old story in the low price segment: The Lifebook A3510 is able to distinguish itself from the competitors.
With a Core i3-1005G1 CPU, 8 GB of working memory (1x 8 GB, single-channel mode, expandable), and a 256-GB NVMe SSD (M.2-2280), the laptop is equipped for office and Internet operation. The fact that the CPU is able to run constantly at a high clock speed is a positive characteristic. The 15.6-inch laptop produces a relatively low noise level and hardly heats up.
While at first glance, the Lifebook may not inspire much enthusiasm, it does offer some goodies: You can charge it using the USB-C port (USB 3.2 Gen 2; Power Delivery), there is a DVD drive, Windows 10 Pro serves as the operating system, and a maintenance flap provides easy access to the working memory, SSD, and battery. The whole package is available for barely 450 Euros (~$502; or 350€, ~$390 without the Windows operating system).
An alternative to the Lifebook could be the Dell Latitude 3510, which offers a slightly better battery life and is optionally also available with an LTE modem.
