The upcoming Firefox OS 2.0 looks great in comparison with the version currently available and soon cheap smartphones powered by it will not have a cheap looking UI anymore.

Mozilla's Firefox browser is very popular, but the Firefox OS mobile platform is almost invisible on the mobile market for the time being. For now, it seems the only solid alternatives for mobile users are Android, Apple's iOS or Microsoft's Windows Phone. On the other hand, recently leaked screenshots of Firefox OS 2.0 show that things may change sooner than expected...

Right now, the latest stable Firefox OS version is 1.3, while the latest preview release is labeled 1.4, but people close to the matter from China have just leaked quite a few screenshots showing that Firefox OS 2.0 will come with major improvements. The new lock screen, for example, brings together notifications in a very attractive manner but it also provides quick access to the music player at the same time.

As you can see in the images below, Firefox OS 2.0 already looks solid and the next natural move for Mozilla would be to push devices driven by this operating system into more mature markets. Until now, Firefox OS-powered smartphones only targeted emerging markets and even there, these devices were always low-end.

If the screenshots prove to be the real thing and Mozilla releases Firefox OS 2.0 in a timely manner, devices powered by it may finally move up and enter the mid-range market, but this remains to be seen.
