Tesla has cancelled the Plaid+, the range-topping model of the Model S. However, it seems that Elon Musk broke the news on Twitter before Tesla could inform those who had ordered the 1,100 bhp car.

Tesla is due to start delivering the Model S Plaid this week, but Elon Musk has marred its launch in a tweet. Tweeting yesterday, Musk confirmed that Tesla had cancelled the Plaid+, which has an estimated 121-mile longer range than the Plaid.

Unfortunately, Tesla's blog and press release websites do not expand on Musk's tweet though, leaving people in the lurch for the time being. However, the Electrek reports that Musk has informed them of the following:

What we are seeing is that once you have a range above 400 miles, more range doesn't really matter. There are essentially zero trips above 400 miles where the driver doesn't need to stop for restroom, food, coffee, etc. anyway.

In our opinion, this dismisses the problem that an estimated 399-mile range is exactly that, estimated. The Electrek notes that driving in cold weathers can reduce range efficiency by between 20% and 50%, bringing the Plaid's range to under 200 miles. Unsurprisingly, people are asking questions about what will happen to current Plaid+ orders. As far as we can tell, neither Tesla nor Musk have expanded upon this.
