70% Digital Storm x17
Source: PC World English Archive.org version
While the Digital Storm x17 is an excellent desktop replacement laptop specs-wise, the rest of the package isn't impressive. Digital Storm makes no attempt to pretty up its machine--the laptop doesn't even sport any fancy lights (and we all know that gamers love fancy lights), and the rest of the design is average or slightly below. The screen quality, sound quality, and keyboard/touchpad quality are also below average. Even if you care about performance and nothing else--not design, not portability, not usability--I would still suggest that you go for a desktop PC instead of the x17.

70% Digital Storm x17: It's a more portable gaming option
Source: PC World English Archive.org version
Digital Storm’s x17 is a good gaming machine that’s lighter than most desktop replacements—but it delivers less performance. If you can plump up your budget by $200, you can grab something like an Alienware M17x R4, which costs $1974.

80% High-end PC gaming, midrange price

Boutique gaming laptops are among the most expensive laptops you can buy, but ironically also the least impressive-looking, thanks to their generic Clevo bodies. That means it's up to the PC maker to pack in enough high-end components and offer the right level of hands-on support. The Digital Storm x17 isn't the prettiest machine on the block, even by those standards, but this $1,999 configuration performs great and is definitely less expensive than comparable builds from other boutique PC makers.

With great speed and an excellent graphics, the X17 stands out as a fast gaming notebook that can hold its own against the competition. We also like the rich and crisp 1080p display and loud Onkyo speakers. However, this system picks up fingerprints too readily, and doesn't quite stand out the way a gaming rig should.

Digital Storm: American hardware shop, founded 2002, which sells an own laptop brand.

Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580M:

High-end mobile GPU based on a the GF114 chip with all shaders enabled.

AMD Radeon HD 7970M: High-end GPU by AMD manufactured in 28nm and based on the GCN architecture.

» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.

2860QM: Fast Quad-core processor based on the Sandy Bridge architecture with an integrated graphics card and dual-channel DDR3 memory controller.

3610QM:

An Ivy Bridge-based quad-core processor clocked at 2.3 GHz with Turbo Boost support up to 3.3 GHz. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 4000 GPU running at 650-1100 MHz on a dual channel DDR3 memory controller.

3.8 kg:

A laptop with this weight is comparatively heavy and less designed for mobility than for use at the desk. Therefore, the devices tend to shine less with battery life than with a large screen and higher performance.

3.8 kg:

72.5%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
