Reviews for the Dell XPS M1340

80% Dell Studio XPS M1340 from PC World Review

Clearly Dell has rectified its issues with the Studio XPS M1340, which is a good thing. This retail system also delivers excellent performance and is slightly cheaper than the equivalent system from Dell, though it is held back by its 32-bit OS. However, while the CCFL backlit display is passable, knowing that the LED backlit version is so much better to view and is also lighter, makes it a near essential addition. This is still a great system, but if you're able to spend the extra, buying from Dell and getting the LED display is recommended.

Dell's new premium 13in notebook is a sight to behold. We investigate whether its "hybrid SLI" graphics make it the ultimate portable gaming rig. There’s no question this is a great notebook choice, especially if you need both power and portability, but don’t look at this as a portable gaming option. While it will play some games in lower settings, it’s going to be a bitter disappointment for desktop gamers looking for a notebook alternative.

NVIDIA GeForce 9500M GE: Combination from Nvidia GeForce 9400M (G) chipset and dedicated NB9M entry level graphics card (GeForce 9200M GS or 9300M GS) in GeForceBoost mode. For energy saving the laptop can run only with the 9400M chipset graphics core. In combination the 9500M GE has the disadvantages of SLI combos (micro stuttering e.g.).

Lower end of Graphics Cards for users who want to play games. New games should run on these cards, but only with decreased details and mediocre resolution.

Intel Core 2 Duo: This is the Core Duo and Core Solo successor with a longer pipeline and 5-20% more speed without more power consumption. As an addition to the Core Duo design there exists a fourth decoder, an amplified SSE-unit and an additional arithmetical logical unit (ALU).

The Core 2 Duo for laptops is identical to the desktop Core 2 Duo processors but the notebook-processors work with lower voltages (0.95 to 1188 Volt) and a lower Frontside bus clock (1066 vs 667 MHz). The performance of equally clocked notebooks is 20-25% lower than Desktop PCs because of the lower Frontside bus clock and the slower hard disks.

P9500: The P9500 is a fast middle class dual core CPU for laptops and basically a Core 2 Duo T9400 with only 25 Watt TDP.

13.3": This is a common display format for subnotebooks. Netbooks, UMPC and some subnotebooks have tinier displays. Nevertheless, the majority of standard laptops has a higher format. The advantage of a small display is, that the subnotebook can be small dimensioned and can be carried easily. Further the small display needs few energy, which improves the battery runtime and in consequence the mobility. The disadvantage is that the reading of texts is a bit exhausting for the eyes, especially with high resolutions.
>> To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.

2.2 kg: These sub-notebooks weight less than the average of all notebooks, but represent a heavier class of weight among the sub-notebooks. 13 inch displays are normal for this class of weight.

Dell: Dell Inc. is a multinational technology corporation that develops, manufactures, sells, and supports personal computers and other computer-related products. Based in Texas, Dell employs more than 82,700 people worldwide (2009). In 2006, Dell purchased the computer hardware manufacturer Alienware. In most countries, the laptops are directly sold to consumers by Dell and each notebook custom-assembled according to a selection of options. Market share regarding sales of personal computers in 2007 (market research IDC): HP 18.9 %, Dell 16.4 %, Acer 9.9 %, Lenovo 7.5 %, Apple 5.7 %

Dell reviews

80%: This rating is not convincing. It must be considered, that there exist hardly any laptops, which receive a rating below 60%. This notebook is evaluated below average, this is not really a recommendation for purchase.
