Reviews for the Dell XPS 1710X

For $1799, the Dell XPS 17 (1710X) is a grand deal. You get lots of RAM, plenty of hard drive space, and most importantly, heaps of CPU and graphics grunt. We like the fact that modern ports such as DisplayPort and USB 3.0 are standard and that it has a built-in digital TV tuner and Blu-ray drive, but we lament the lack of a remote control and an ExpressCard slot. Furthermore, we think that the touchscreen isn't really that useful.

NVIDIA GeForce GT 445M:
GF106-based card with only 144 Shaders. Memory bandwidth may be 128 bits or 192 bits, depending on the model.
Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.
Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
The Core i7-740QM is a high-end quad-core CPU for laptops (in 2010) with a relative small base clock rate and a high Turbo Boost max frequency of 2.93 GHz (for one core). Therefore, it combines the advantages of a slow clocked quad core CPU with a fast single core one. Compared to the faster Core i7 mobile CPUs, the 740QM only features 6MB L3 Cache.
