Overall, Dell's XPS 15 is an impressive machine, offering good build quality, class-leading connectivity, decent video and audio, and plenty of power for the average user. It's fully upgradeable too, including such luxuries as a digital TV tuner and the unique (for a consumer laptop at this price point) option of a Full HD, RGB-LED backlit screen, which makes this an intriguing choice for colour-critical work.

The newly redesigned Dell XPS 15 brings a lot of cool features to the table, but seems to miss the mark in the design department. With previous XPS notebooks being flagship models from Dell, it's disappointing to see such a bland and normal looking system. I think it's rather odd when you look at "budget" models like the Inspiron 15R and see flashier colors and sleeker profiles. Build quality was a step up at least, with metal panels protecting the screen and metal on the palmrest and keyboard trim inside the notebook. The plastic chassis felt strong, but left something to be desired when it came to accessing internal components. Users looking to replace the hard drive will find it very difficult, as the notebook requires full disassembly if they want to upgrade to an SSD later on. System performance was very good with the Intel Core i5 560M and NVIDIA GeForce GT420M performing well in a variety of tasks. The sound system was my favorite feature on this notebook, providing booming bass and great audio quality. Overall if you don't mind the looks, the XPS does offer a pretty good value, starting at $799 for the base configuration.

Dell is relaunching its high-end laptop line for the holiday season with a revamped line of XPS systems. These are media-focused counterparts to the gaming-centric Alienware, and, now that the poorly defined Studio line has been killed, the main alternative to the infinitely configurable mainstream Inspirons. Dell's new line of XPS laptops, including the XPS 15, offers more bang for the buck than most, combining great audio and rock-solid features for less than $1,000.

The Dell XPS 15 ($1,115 direct), a desktop replacement laptop, is a wonderland of lavish features, cutting-edge components, and ,overall, one of the best laptops I've tested. Even more impressive is that most of its parts are customizable before finalizing your purchase: The XPS 15 can be completely over the top or priced to meet a certain budget. It's one of the few 15-inch laptops that has support for a full 1080p screen resolution, a Skype-certified HD webcam, floor-thumping speakers, and every wireless technology imaginable. If the Intel Core i5 processor and Nvidia GeForce GT 420M (with Optimus technology) aren't groundbreaking enough for you, there are options for quad-core processors and a more powerful graphics card. The only thing left to do now is hand the XPS 15 the Editors' Choice in the desktop replacement laptop category.

If you're looking for a reasonably priced all-purpose notebook that's great for multimedia and good enough for real gaming, the Dell XPS 15 is one of your best options. The sound quality alone really sets this laptop apart, as does the HD webcam (though we wish it performed better in low light). If you're looking for something more portable and stylish, you might want to consider a 14-inch system like the HP Envy 14. However, if you want an entertainment PC for use around the house, the XPS 15 should be near or at the top of your list.

Reasons to buy the Dell XPS 15 are many. It’s a refreshing update to Dell’s premier laptop range, combining features and options that are hard to find in many other mainstream laptops. A full-HD screen, USB 3.0 ports, Nvidia 3D TV Play, very good onboard sound, striking looks and features -- all this at a not quite insanely high price. If you’re looking for a very good desktop replacement laptop at the Rs. 50,000 mark, make sure you check out the new Dell XPS 15.

Recently, we've seen the release of a gaggle of powerful, but not blindingly expensive, laptops. Dell wants in on the action with its 15.6-inch XPS 15, which sports a meaty Intel Core i5 CPU. As long as you don't go crazy with the customisation options, the Dell XPS 15 will prove a relatively affordable and powerful laptop with a great display. But it's big, bulky and has a few design quirks that keep it from being great.

Although you can get an XPS 15 for as little as £529, with Core i5, Bluetooth 3, the combo Blu-ray/DVD burner and the superb 1080p screen the model we looked at is nearly twice the price at £939. You can reduce that by leaving out a few of the options, but it's the combination of the screen, the sound system and the performance that makes the XPS 15 a winner. The word we keep wanting to use is solid - but in a good way.

As we had previously tested the Adamo XPS system with its aluminium chassis our expectations for the XPS 15 were set reasonably high and for the most part it delivered. The Aluminium lid looks and feels great and it was good to see that Dell continued the use of this material on the keyboard surround. It would have been good to have a full aluminium base too but being fair the plastic version used by Dell does have a good quality finish.

We're also still trying to get an HP Envy 14 in for comparison, and it would be great to get some Sony laptops in for testing as well, but with every passing week we tend to lose hope. At this point, the latest Envy 14 revision has been around for over three months. It still looks like it compares well with the new XPS, but the Radiance Infinity 900p panel is no longer an option, Waves comes standard while Beats costs extra, and Optimus trumps AMD's switchable graphics.

Dell's notebooks have always stood in good light, and their XPS line has constantly managed good value and performance that is hard to beat. The ThinkPad Edge E220s is the best-looking and most comfortable small business notebook on the market. Its gorgeous soft-plastic and chrome design makes a bold statement in the boardroom or the coffee shop and its keyboard provides the best typing experience in the business. Plus, its slight frame fits comfortably in even the smallest bag. Our only issue is the E220's below-average battery life, though the approximate 5 hours of runtime will be long enough for many users. If you need more endurance, consider the $855 Toshiba Portege R835, which lasts an hour and a half longer on a charge. However, if you want the ultimate in small business style and comfort, the ThinkPad Edge E220s should be at the top of your list.

If you're looking for a well built 15-inch notebook that can handle your productivity and multimedia needs with aplomb, put the Dell XPS 15 on your short list. Its svelte aluminum chassis and sleek lines are sure to garner more than a few oohs and aahs, as will its beautiful full-HD screen. Despite its thin profile, it may not be the best choice for frequent travel, but it's certainly not out of the question, and you'll get a full day's worth of battery life if you're unable to plug in.

The key thing to remember about the Dell XPS 15 is that this notebook is the best combination of attractive design, solid construction and excellent performance that we've seen so far from Dell. Yes, more than a few people will probably criticize this Ultrabook for looking too much like a 15-inch Apple MacBook Pro. Regardless of the obvious visual similarities, the XPS 15 is no less an extraordinary notebook PC.

Criticising the Dell XPS 15 is a bit like taking a crack at Helen of Troy - we could do it, but history doesn’t remember such transgressions. The latest revamp of Dell's Inspiron and XPS laptops continues to move in the right direction, clearly inspired by the growth of Apple's MacBooks and the push toward thinner, snazzier ultrabook-style laptops. You can get similar components to our Core i7 Dell XPS 15 configuration for less, but the rock-solid design makes this feel like a premium machine.

If you're looking for a high-end PC that marries good looks and superb performance, and are more Windows than Mac, then you really shouldn't look any further than the Dell XPS 15. The final mention must go to the incredible Corning Gorilla Glass, Full HD display. It may not have the "wow" factor of the MacBook Pro with Retina display, but in the PC market we're not sure we've seen anything quite as impressive.

Among premium desktop replacement laptops, the Dell XPS 15 is an above-average contender, with top hardware and solid performance. Unfortunately—especially with such a strong physical resemblance to the MacBook Pro—it can't match Apple's Retina display, Thunderbolt connection, and top-tier operating system. As a result, the Editors' Choice Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch (Retina Display) stays on top, but the Dell XPS 15 takes a close second place with strong performance and a much more affordable price. If you're in the market for a premium laptop, the Dell XPS 15 is an easy choice among Windows PCs.

When I first laid hands (and eyes) on the new XPS 15, I was extremely impressed. It’s such a noticeable upgrade compared to previous XPS laptops in terms of build quality that I really can’t understate the fact. Dell’s in a bit of a Catch-22 here, of course, with a design that’s very similar to the MacBook Pro 15. On the one hand, if they do a 15” laptop that’s similar but not built as well (e.g. the XPS 15z from last year), they get complaints from people saying, “Apple can do it, so why can’t Dell?”

The $1,699 Dell XPS 15 offers an impressive combination of beauty and power. The full HD screen is bright with eye-popping color, and the speakers are capable of delivering robust sound. We also love the luxurious soft-touch deck and appreciate the well-designed touchpad. We just wish the keyboard felt a little snappier and that the webcam were sharper.

The XPS 15 definitely steals a price march on the £1,499 MacBook Pro, even if Apple's machine is slightly better fitted out with faster variants from Intel's Core family. Still, Dell has put its flagpole in the ground; these are some of the best workhorse laptops we've yet seen at this price point.

This 2012 generation of the Dell XPS 15 has a well-finished, upgraded chassis, good processing power, quality audio components, good handling of everyday tasks and a certain amount of gaming capability. At the end of the day, what can be said about the XPS 15 is that it’s a great looking laptop and on paper it checks all the right boxes. Everything about the XPS screams luxury, from its class-leading screen and physical design to the high-end components and quality ergonomics. It’s unmistakably one of the finest laptops around. It’s potentially better than its near-identical stablemate: the XPS shares its screen, design and keyboard with the Dell Precision M3800, but it’s got a bigger SSD, better battery and beefier GPU. The M3800 is only worth buying if you need its ISV certification – but that’s the only reason why you’d pay almost £100 more for the M3800.

Dell’s XPS 15 is a valiant attempt to compete with the best premium notebooks but, ultimately, it falls a bit short. Dell XPS 15-9530

Dell has been in the manufacturing of computers business for a long time and to have survived until today despite fierce competition. This proves how strong Dell is in its sector and one of Dell’s latest laptop that strives to continue its excellence is the Dell XPS 15-9530. The Dell XPS 15-9530 has an Intel Core i7 4702HQ processor. It can be clocked to a high 3.2 GHz on Turbo mode making it as fast a quad core processor. In addition, it comes with a dual channel DDR3 memory controller and has an integrated HD Graphics 4600 GPU. Along that integrated graphic card, it features an NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M, which is one of the best cards in the 700M series. It utilizes the Kepler architecture to provide users with the best graphical experience for its class. Playing modern games with ultra-high settings should be a breeze.

The display is another work of art. The 15.6 inch display provides a large enough screen for most occasions and comes with the highest screen resolution of its kind: 3200 by 1800 pixels. With such great screen specifications, it brings HD to a whole new level. And despite all that, the laptop only weighs 2 kilograms. The most attractive feature of the Dell XPS 15-9530 is definitely its amazing screen clarity. As long as the budget can be met, this laptop is definitely worth a buy. It may just be what Dell needs to push themselves even further to the front line.

Despite being a lovely looking laptop, the Dell XPS 15 just has too many flaws to justify its price. The Dell XPS 15 is by far one of the best laptops we have tested in a long time. It's hard to fault, as its weaknesses – which are few – aren't too significant. For example, the trackpad taking some to get used to will become irrelevant after time, and the chassis being prone to scratches is preventable if you look after the laptop properly and buy a protective carry case. The real caveat here, though, is the price. At just less than £1,700 for a laptop configured as reviewed, the XPS 15 doesn't come cheap. However, the laptop does start at a much lower price of £1,099, but for this you would have to sacrifice a lot of performance, as this buys you a lower entry-level specification: an Intel Core i5 processor, 8GB of RAM and a slower 500GB hard drive with a 32GB SSD to manage faster boots.

Dell’s XPS 15 is a system of extremes. The display provides incredible sharpness, but its quality is well below average. The Dell XPS 15 9530 is a great laptop to use. The bright, vibrant and incredibly high resolution screen is truly beautiful to look at, though it does have a major drawback – it is extremely reflective. This makes it very difficult to use in a bright room or in an outdoor environment, as the reflection of your own face will be very distracting. In low light conditions, the gloss screen does help improve media viewing quality, but a matt finish would be more to our own tastes. That screen looks stunning when playing ‘casual’ titles like Hearthstone but it will struggle to run anything moderately intensive at native resolutions … the modest GT750M graphics are just not designed for this. It’s not that 1080p looks bad, but it just seems wasteful having all that pixel density and not being able to use it. It might have been nice to see an upgrade option for a 765M or 770M, but then you’re crossing over into Alienware territory.

The XPS 15 (9530) certainly trumps its Windows-based competition like the Asus Zenbook VX51VZ-XB71 in battery life, price, and features. But how does it stack up to the Apple MacBook Pro, our current Editors' Choice for desktop replacement laptops? It matches the MacBook Pro in performance (multimedia and 3D), has more RAM, higher resolution touch screen, and twice the storage. However, it also has a higher price by almost $300, problems with glass reflectivity, and two hours less battery life. The MacBook Pro comes with iWork and iLife apps, which arguably make the MacBook more useful without additional purchases for the XPS 15. In terms of bragging rights, premium construction materials, and wow factor, both are even. It is very close, but those two hours of battery life and $300 price difference tips the scales in favor of the current champ. The XPS 15 (9530) comes highly recommended, but at the end of the day if we were in the market for such a system and if it were our money, we'd buy the MacBook Pro.

Intel Core i5:

460M: The Core i5-460M has only 3 MB L3 Cache (compared to the I7-620M) and clocks between 2.53-2.8 GHz (Turbo Mode). Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (GMA HD) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.

2410M:

Dual-core processor based on the Sandy Bridge architecture with an integrated graphics card and dual-channel DDR3 memory controller. The CPU is clocked at 2.3 GHz (Turbo Boost 2.6-2.9 GHz) and the GPU at 650 (1200 MHz Turbo).

3210M: Fast Ivy-Bridge-based dual-core, includes HD 4000 GPU, core clock 2.5 - 3.1 GHz

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.

840QM: The Core i7-840QM is a high-end quad core CPU for laptops that clocks due to the Turbo Mode from 1.86-3.2 GHz. Therefore, the processor combines the advantages of fast single core CPUs and slow quad-core CPUs. Hyperthreading allows the simultaneous use of 8 Threads in parallel.

740QM:

The Core i7-740QM is a high-end quad-core CPU for laptops (in 2010) with a relative small base clock rate and a high Turbo Boost max frequency of 2.93 GHz (for one core). Therefore, it combines the advantages of a slow clocked quad core CPU with a fast single core one. Compared to the faster Core i7 mobile CPUs, the 740QM only features 6MB L3 Cache.

3612QM: An Ivy Bridge-based quad-core processor clocked at 2.1 GHz with Turbo Boost support up to 3.1 GHz. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 4000 GPU running at 650-1100 MHz on a dual channel DDR3 memory controller. The speciality of the i7-3612QM is the low TDP of 35 Watt compared to 45 Watt of the other Ivy Bridge quad core CPUs (e.g. 3610QM).

4702HQ: Haswell-based quad-core processor clocked at 2.2 GHz with Turbo Boost support up to 3.2 GHz. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 4600 GPU and a dual channel DDR3 memory controller.

15.6: 15 inch display-variants are the standard and are used for more than the half of all notebooks. 15.4 inch display with 16:10 are the standard for notebook displays. However nowadays, more and more 16:9 displays with 15.6 inch appear. The reason why so many people like displays with medium size is, that this size is not exhausting for the eyes, does not need too much energy and the laptops can be kept quite compact.

16.0: 16 inch display-variants exist since 2008 and partially got the market share of 15 inch notebooks. The reason why so many people like displays with medium size is, that this size is not exhausting for the eyes, does not need too much energy and the laptops can be kept quite compact.

» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.

2 kg:

These sub-notebooks weight less than the average of all notebooks, but represent a heavier class of weight among the sub-notebooks. 12 inch displays are normal for this class of weight.

2.96 kg:

This weight is average for notebooks. Therefore the numerous mass of laptops with 15 inch display fits in this class of weight.

80.75%: This rating should be considered to be average. This is because the proportion of notebooks which have a higher rating is approximately equal to the proportion which have a lower rating.
