Reviews for the Dell XPS 13 2-in-1

Dell’s XPS 13 notebook is easily one of the best 13-inch notebooks available now. It has a wonderful display, it is supremely compact and portable, and it offered decent performance and battery life. There is really very little not to like about the XPS 13.

The Dell convertible has some good points but its price coupled with its less impressive performance as compared to the XPS 13 clamshell, makes the latter a better buy. The Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 was introduced at the CES 2017 and was, in fact, one of the more impressive devices back then. As it turns out, the XPS 13 is too good a laptop to be overshadowed by its slightly remarkable little hybrid brother.

With the XPS 13 2-in-1, Dell marries the strengths of its ultraportables with the flexibility of a convertible laptop. You'll probably need dongles, but strong performance and ultimate portability make it a worthy contender.

Del’s XPS 13 2-in-1 doesn’t deliver many surprises, but it’s a faithful rendition of the company’s beloved premium laptop with convertible features.

This Dell 2-in-1 hits all the right notes, but its biggest struggle isn't against its own kin—it's against its excellent competition. Namely, one really great HP 2-in-1: the HP Spectre X360. HP's best comes in a prettier package, has a webcam that's in the right spot, and even packs fully-powered Intel chips inside, making it faster. Oh, and it's cheaper; the Spectre I reviewed with an Intel i7 chip, 8 GB RAM, and a 256 GB SSD rings the till at $140 less than the Dell. Very recently, HP even announced models with pen compatibility and even 4K displays, even further chipping away at the Dell's strong suits.

The XPS 13 2-in-1's flip-back display is a big perk for workers who want to take notes and use touch screen apps. Plus, it boasts speedy performance and a comfortable keyboard. And commuters will love the fact that it's significantly smaller, thinner and lighter than any competing 2-in-1 laptop on the market.

Despite a few trade-offs in ports and processing power, this slimmer hybrid version of the XPS 13 is an excellent full-time laptop and part-time tablet.

After my everyday use with the XPS 13 2-in-1, I can say with confidence that it's a very capable 2-in-1 that I could see myself using daily. I love that this convertible's compact design takes up very little room in my lap (and bag) when I'm commuting.

Yes, we've seen convertible laptops like this, but none with Dell's XPS styling. And, based on my conversations with potential PC buyers, that alone could be enough to tempt them away from rival machines. While Dell made some concessions with the XPS 13 2-in-1, I'm ultimately impressed that it managed to deliver a premium convertible laptop that mostly lives up to its beloved predecessor.

Even then, the Spectre x360 machine is only 0.8 inch deeper front-to-back. We suspect most of us can clear a sliver of extra room on our desks to save $300 (between comparable models) and gain two extra hours of battery life. The HP system is, to our eyes, the better deal, even if we do like the look and feel of the XPS 13 2-in-1 a bit better.

All in all, both the Lenovo Yoga 910 and Dell XPS 13 are 2 of the best laptops that have come out in the past few months. Either one could be a major productivity and entertainment laptop device even for different kinds of users.

It’s has XPS 13 in the name, but this is a very different laptop to the standard XPS 13. It’s less powerful, but lighter and should have better battery life. It’s a case of horses for courses: if thin and light is your priority and you won’t be doing much in the way of intense multimedia work, it’s very attractive. Still, the regular model will always be better value for those who don’t want a 2-in-1 design.

The XPS 13 is one of our favourite Windows laptops, and I don't see that changing with this convertible model. It looks gorgeous, makes a few welcome changes, and adds a genuinely useful rotating hinge for doubling up as a tablet.

Port wise there are two USB Type-C, Thunderbolt 3, microSD and a 3.5mm headphones jack. Notice how it's all future-proofed small scale? Yep, that seems to be the way things are going. Oh, and there's a fingerprint scanner too.

On top of that, Dell pared down the port selection on the 2-in-1; you get a Thunderbolt 3 port (which can support up to two 4K monitors) and a USB Type-C port. There’s not a single full-size USB port (the standard model has two), which could be a big inconvenience depending on your needs.

Like the Surface Studio, the XPS 27 folds almost flat, like a designer's easel. It's debatable how much of an advantage that is unless you make heavy use of a stylus, but it certainly delivers more flexibility than anything Apple's iMacs offer.

The Dell XPS 13 was already excellent, and it’s a smart move from Dell to release this hybrid edition without compromising the design and functionality of the original vision. The XPS 13 2-in-1 is an ultrabook powerhouse and will likely fit in to any home or work environment better than many other laptops out there. The thin bezels, excellent keyboard and thoughtful design are marred only by a high asking price. Then again, this is the future.

Another plus points on the screen is the 3200 x 1800-pixel screen, which is the maximum resolution. The colors were bright and vivid, and videos played smoothly. A 4K option won’t be available, unfortunately. You do get fewer ports than on the regular XPS 13, and the battery life could be longer, but overall, the XPS 13 2-in-1 is a remarkable hybrid laptop and tablet In 1.

The XPS 13 2-in-1 sacrifices almost nothing in achieving its new design, save for a now-smaller microSD card reader and standard barrel connector for power. That said, despite its massive improvements and centering (at last), we’re still not exactly excited about the webcam beneath the screen.

So if you want versatility, go with the XPS 13 2-in-1, but if you're looking to multitask, go for the XPS 13 laptop. Nevertheless, the XPS 13 2-in-1 is a fine hybrid device with a great screen.

Given that Microsoft has yet to announce the SP4’s successor, Dell may be biting off more than it can chew with the XPS 13 2-in-1. It may be built based on the best Ultrabook around and updated it with some much-needed modern touches, but if Microsoft builds upon the success of the Surface Pro 4 in the next iteration expected this year, Dell may have quite a bit of competition in its hands.
Positive: Impressive design; compact size; good hardware.

Model: As laptops progress to fanless models, users are spoilt with many choices of slim and sleek laptops yet with efficient cooling systems. Dell has introduced such a line of laptops with its Latitude series and is doing the same with the XPS 13 2-in-1. On first sight, the XPS 13 2-in-1’s slim construction is incredibly stunning. Its dimensions measure at 19.81 x 30.34 x 0.81-1.37 cm (7.8 x 11.98 x 0.32-0.54 inch) and it weighs merely 1.24 kg. It is solidly built with machined aluminium, carbon fibre, bonded Corning Gorilla Glass NBT, and its steel hinges are wrapped in machined aluminium. What is wonderful is that it still keeps the important aesthetics of the XPS 13, which was something that made it truly unique. Performance-wise, it is powered by the same blazing fast 7th generation Intel Core i5-7Y54 Processor with integrated Intel HD Graphics as the XPS 13.. Be prepared to be blown away by its virtually borderless display as it is fitted with a 13.3-inch FHD InfinityEdge touch display. Dell’s attempt in keeping the screen almost bezel-free succeeds in maximizing viewing angles and clarity. This also allows the entire laptop to be as small as a normal 11-inch laptop. Its unique hinge allows the screen to bend back a full 360 degrees, essentially transforming it into a beautiful tablet. In this mode, it’s bezel-less design make it look extra unique. There are currently no tablets or convertibles in the market which can look as good as this. However, this bezel-less design is also a problem for those who are using the tablet while carrying it. With limited place for holding, users tend to accidentally touch the display which then registers it as an input. This is a common problem to all bezel-less devices such as the Xiaomi Mi Mix and Samsung’s S7 Edge.
Memory options range between 4 GB to 8 GB of RAM, and storage is available in form of a 128 GB or 256 GB SSD. Network connectivity is supported by an Intel 8265 802.11ac 2x2 WiFi and Bluetooth. The Sound quality of the XPS 13 2-in-1 is crisp and clear as it is professionally tuned with Waves and the speakers are conveniently located on both sides. For maximum security, a fast touch fingerprint scanner is integrated on board, which is also Microsoft Hello compliant. It comes bundled with a primary 4-cell (46Wh) battery, which Dell claims is capable of up to 15 hours of runtime when running productivity applications or up to 10 hours of battery life when streaming Netflix content. Users may consider the optional Dell Hybrid Adapter + Power Bank, which will give additional battery life of 11 hours. The keyboard bundled together is spill resistant and illuminated for use under dim environments. It comes pre-installed with Windows 10 Pro. In all, the XPS 13 is a seriously cool device for Windows power users. If the XPS 13 was made to compete with the Macbook Pro and other slim Windows laptops, the XPS 13 2-in-1 is made to compete with the massive amounts of convertibles in the market such as Lenovo’s Yoga series and HP’s 360° series. It is also safe to say that the XPS 13 2-in-1 is currently the best in this category, but it does come at a slightly higher price.

There are hardly any tablets in this display size range anymore. For subnotebooks, on the other hand, it is the standard format.
The advantage of subnotebooks is that the entire laptop can be small and therefore easily portable. The smaller display also has the advantage of requiring less power, which further improves battery life and thus mobility. The disadvantage is that reading texts is more strenuous on the eyes. High resolutions are more likely to be found in standard laptops.
