Evolution. Dell launched a slim and portable line in its entry-level business range with the Vostro V130. It's also supposed to convince in terms of design. Powerful Intel Sandy Bridge CPUs follow the first attempts with ULV processors. A few modifications have also been made on the case. Our comprehensive review now follows the preview.

There are a lot of 13.3-inch laptops around, all with the same mix of Intel chips. Dell's given the Vostro V131 a distinctive look that makes it stand out from the usual crowd of matte and glossy black machines - but that's really it's only distinctive feature, and it is let down by the lack of an optical drive. Even so, there's a lot to like here, with plenty of battery life, a good screen and an ergonomic design (and a distinct lack of bloatware). While the model we looked at is more expensive than some of the competition, there are cheaper options that can save you a considerable amount. One thing is for sure – the V131 is a considerable improvement over its predecessor, the V130.

Every once in a while we come across one that stands out from the competition due to unique features, innovative technology or genre changing performance. The Vostro V131 can’t boast any of these points but it still succeeds in being everything most of us could possibly want in a notebook. Dell’s goal here wasn’t to create a product that would blaze its way through benchmarks, nor play games at high framerates.

Although not without some issues, the Dell Vostro 131 is a solid business ultraportable and its shortcomings are largely mitigated by its low price and long battery life. The lack of a desktop dock or port replicator option will limit its use to some and we have a few reservations about build quality, but these don’t detract too much from its excellent value.

The Vostro V131 is priced at Rs. 43,990 (MOP). It follows the trend of the other expensively priced Vostros, but does fall a little short in terms of build. With the specs, it compares straight to the Lenovo G570, we reviewed earlier. However, with the price, it’s definitely not better than the Vostro V3350, we reviewed earlier. The earlier model packs in more RAM, a better processor and a DVD writer for the same price, and we’d surely recommend that one over this.

Despite the lack of some high-end business features, the pricing and build quality still make it a really compelling product. It’s got the specs needed to actually get work done and connectivity that some larger notebooks struggle to match. This is definitely one of the better ultraportables currently available.

80% Dell Vostro V131 Review: A Good, Cheap Business Laptop
Source: Notebookreview.com English Archive.org version
We believe the Dell Vostro V131 makes for a great small-to-medium business notebook. Aside from its low contrast display, the V131 provides amazing battery life (nine hours), has good overall performance thanks to its internal hardware, and it has some useful features such as a backlit keyboard and a fingerprint reader. Dell also gives you 15 months of free Trend Micro security, even if you go with the $499 model. The notebook also has two fast USB 3.0 ports, a comfortable keyboard and touchpad, and the preferred 'office friendly' matte display for easier viewing in a bright office. Things to be aware of: it doesn't have a docking station port, and the lid of the display bends inward easily. This could make it a target for troubles while traveling or while being used for more than desk productivity.

If you tinker with the configuration options you can get a Dell Vostro V131 for an attractive price – the top-end somewhat slightly less so, but only because the silver finish and light weight invites unflattering comparison with Apple's MacBook Air. Without the current spate of Dell discounts, the top-end Vostro costs £960 – which then puts a 13in Air within reach and the 11in model for less, although they run a slower Core i5 chip. Yet at the mid-range, the Dell Vostro V131 certainly holds its own as a portable day-to-day work machine.

The $889 Dell Vostro V131 is one of the better small business notebooks you can buy. The machine retains the incredibly attractive aluminum chassis of its predecessor and improves upon it with a comfy backlit keyboard; a longer-lasting, user-replaceable battery; and a fingerprint reader for security. While the Acer Aspire TimelineX 3830TG-6431 offers better graphics performance and endurance--but no fingerprint reader--for the same price, the Vostro V131 is a solid SMB system with style and substance.

Though allegedly designed for small business, the Vostro is a clear winner for anyone who is in the market for a small, powerful laptop with excellent battery endurance. Although the price tag of $889 (as configured) is not a bargain, this laptop never feels like it needs to have a lower price. It’s competitive with (but not necessarily superior to) anything of similar size.

Instead of getting discouraged by the poor reception for the Vostro V130, Dell has launched the revised and corrected Vostro 131. The Vostro V131 holds to its promise. It's more powerful, better equipped and with a better battery life than its processor the V130. Nevertheless, you can find models that are just as powerful and well-equipped but with longer battery life and at a lower price, such as the Asus U36SD.

Dell's Vostro V131 may be a business class 13-inch laptop but it is one that many consumers should consider as well. With its $800 price tag, it offers some surprising performance and a very stylish design. Battery life is also one of the best for how it is equipped. One major issue with the laptop is the screen that has below average color, brightness and viewing angles.

The stripped down budget version – no backlit keyboard or 3G connectivity, a feeble 1.1GHz Celeron 847 CPU with 2GB RAM and a 320GB hard drive comes in at $550, but even so more bang for your buck can be had elsewhere. For a fully-featured business notebook, the Sony VAIO S would be a better option.

The Vostro V131 is ideal for everyday office operations like document editing, presentations and e-mail, and also provides impressive collaboration options thanks to a full HD camera, digital array mics and support for Intel’s WiDi. USB 3.0 support will also come in useful for digital content producers as it supports transfer rates 10 times the speed of USB 2.0, and the backlight chiclet keyboard and quick launch keys are noteworthy usability enhancements.

Performance with the Dell Vostro V131 was quite good with the Core i5 model and definitely on-par with other similar laptops. We believe that this laptop is a strong contender for users looking for portability and features without breaking the bank. There were no noticeable issues with multitasking, HD video watching and even photo/video editing. Since this computer does have integrated Intel graphics, you can completely count out any 3D gaming completely, but this isn't the type of computer that gamers should even be looking at any ways. Battery life was most impressive with the included 6-cell battery. We were able to get about 6 to 6:30 hours of life, which is a big improvement over previous Vostro models and even a little bit more than other similar laptops. This is an improvement over the previous Dell Vostro V130 model, which we also reviewed and commented on the short battery life.

Most companies strive to create distinctions between their small-business and consumer laptop lines, sometimes to the point of creating whole new designs that aren't available otherwise. The 2011 Dell Vostro V131 succeeds at being an affordable and powerful update to the 13-inch small-business laptop, adding much-needed battery life and processing boosts.

Ultimately, the Vostro V131’s configurability is its greatest asset: if you’re after a light, portable, low-cost laptop, a frugally equipped model would make a tempting option for small companies with tight IT budgets. However, a fully loaded Vostro with all the trimmings doesn’t make financial sense. For a higher-spec business portable, there’s no doubt the Sony VAIO S Series makes a better choice.

The differences between a small business and enterprise laptop used to be more clear-cut, but now the lines are blurring. The Dell Vostro V131 has been updated to include a standard-voltage Core i5 processor and big 65WH battery. It has most of the features found in its enterprise siblings and doesn't cost nearly as much. The only small business laptop that has the V131 beat is its sibling, the Dell 3350, whose battery is longer lasting and overall price is more budget-friendly.

Dell Vostro V131: A Budget Business Laptop
Source: AnandTech English Archive.org version
We mentioned ultrabooks at the start and raised the question of how a thin and light business laptop would compare with such offerings. In looking at the MacBook Air and the ASUS UX21E, the breakdown is pretty simple. The Vostro offers more computational power and better battery life in a slightly larger package, and it comes with a better warranty.

Intel HD Graphics 3000: Integrated graphics card in the Intel Sandy Bridge processors (Core ix-2xxx). The HD 3000 is the faster (internally GT2 called) version with 12 Execution Units (EUs).

Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.

» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.

2410M:

Dual-core processor based on the Sandy Bridge architecture with an integrated graphics card and dual-channel DDR3 memory controller. The CPU is clocked at 2.3 GHz (Turbo Boost 2.6-2.9 GHz) and the GPU at 650 (1200 MHz Turbo).

» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.

13.30":

There are hardly any tablets in this display size range anymore. For subnotebooks, on the other hand, it is the standard format.

The advantage of subnotebooks is that the entire laptop can be small and therefore easily portable. The smaller display also has the advantage of requiring less power, which further improves battery life and thus mobility. The disadvantage is that reading texts is more strenuous on the eyes. High resolutions are more likely to be found in standard laptops.

Dell: Dell is a U.S. manufacturer (based in Texas) of computer hardware founded in 1984 and is one of the largest international manufacturers in terms of both market share and notebook models. Its product line includes desktops, notebooks, storage systems, monitors, servers, printers, consumer electronics and peripherals. Dell offers laptops that are suitable for various applications, such as business laptops, gaming laptops, ultra portables and workstations. Dell's business laptops from the Latitude and Precision series are an option for professional users and businesses.

In 2023, Dell had an approximate 17% market share of global PC sales, ranking #3 after Lenovo and HP.

For gaming enthusiasts, Dell's Alienware brand is for gaming notebooks.

78.33%: This rating is not earth-shattering. This rating must actually be seen as average, since there are about as many devices with worse ratings as better ones. A purchase recommendation can only be seen with a lot of goodwill, unless it is about websites that generally rate strictly.
