Dell refers to the 15.6-inch Precision M4500 laptop as a mobile workstation, and it's easy to see why. With its speedy Intel Core i5 processor and meaty Nvidia Quadro FX graphics chip, it's much more powerful than most business laptops. It's not pretty, but the 15.6-inch Dell Precision M4500 delivers potent performance. If you value function over form and have deep pockets, we reckon it's worth considering.

While the Dell Precision M4500 lacks the power and features of larger graphics workstations such as the Lenovo ThinkPad W701, its impressive power, usability and mobility make it a viable alternative. The poor cooling system and limited extras hold it back from greatness, however, as it is uncomfortable to use on your lap and lacks comprehensive features.

After spending several weeks putting the Dell Precision M4500 through its paces, it's clear that this is one of the most powerful mobile workstations we've tested. If you're looking for a 15-inch workstation-class machine for your office then the M4500 is a very good candidate next to the Lenovo ThinkPad W510 and the HP EliteBook 8540w or 8440w notebooks. Despite the impressive performance and awesome range of configuration options, the build quality of the Dell Precision M4500 is a little less than impressive in the areas of the keyboard and screen lid. The rest of this mobile workstation is quite solid, so these two weak points might be a relatively minor issue. Bottom line, if you need a 15-inch mobile workstation with every configuration option imaginable, then the Dell Precision M4500 probably belongs on the top of a very short list.

Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.
NVIDIA Quadro FX 880M: Professional middle class workstation graphics card that is based on the GeForce 330M core but features lower clock rates.
NVIDIA Quadro FX 1800M: Mobile workstation mid-range graphics card for 15" laptops. Based on the same core as the GeForce GT 335M but equipped with professional drivers and support.

Intel Core i5:
520M:
The Core i5-520M has only 3 MB L3 Cache (compared to the I7-640M) and clocks between 2.4-2.93 GHz (Turbo Mode). Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (GMA HD 3150) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.
Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
940XM: Fastest Core i7 laptop CPU in 2010 but with a TDP of 55 Watt it is quite power hungry. Due to the Turbo Mode, the CPU can run with up to 3.2 GHz. Because of the Extreme tag, the multiplier is not locked, and therefore the CPU is easy to overclock.
15.6: 15 inch display-variants are the standard and are used for more than the half of all notebooks. 15.4 inch display with 16:10 are the standard for notebook displays. However nowadays, more and more 16:9 displays with 15.6 inch appear. The reason why so many people like displays with medium size is, that this size is not exhausting for the eyes, does not need too much energy and the laptops can be kept quite compact.
» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.
2.8 kg:
This weight is average for notebooks. Therefore the numerous mass of laptops with 15 inch display fits in this class of weight.
3.06 kg:
80.2%: This rating should be considered to be average. This is because the proportion of notebooks which have a higher rating is approximately equal to the proportion which have a lower rating.
