85% 2008's top three netbooks

Kit of the Year Launched as a product class in 2007, it was only in 2008 that the netbook hit the big time, with World+Dog rushing to follow Asus and launch one, and the rest of us dashing to buy one.
The Dell Inspiron Mini 9 is easily one of the nicest looking netbooks on the market to date, and its no slouch when it comes to crunching numbers. Despite its small footprint, it has a decent-size keyboard, and a Dell's no-fan design means this SSD-only offering runs silent. There's a choice of Windows XP and - for once - a truly desktop grade Linux.85%

Dell - Inspiron Mini 9 review

So has it been worth the wait? By and large yes: Dell's first foray into the world of the netbook, the Inspiron Mini 9, is a well built, nicely styled, well priced system that offers a real challenge to some of the other netbooks in the market. Only the battery life is a bit of a disappointment.

Without doubt, the Dell Inspiron Mini 9 is easily the nicest looking netbook on the market so far, and its performance scores show it's no slouch when it comes to crunching numbers. Despite its small footprint, it has a decent-size keyboard and provided you can live with the function keys being relegated to a secondary location, it's a good compromise. On the downside, its SSD drive is not only small but also a bit on the slow side. The built-in 3G is also a bit of a mixed blessing as currently you either have to enter a two-year contract with Vodafone or go without completely. We'd much prefer at least the option of buying a 3G enabled Mini 9 outright - especially given that who knows what the laptop market will look like in two years' time. That said, if you're going to £25 a month to spend anyway, a free netbook certainly isn't to be sniffed at.

If you want a "connected" netbook then the Dell Inspiron Mini 9 on Vodafone is your best bet right now. Available for free on some attractive contracts, it's the only netbook to offer integrated HSDPA. That it's found inside a cohesively designed, attractive and highly portable chassis only adds to the appeal.

Dell's Inspiron Mini 9 is among the smaller of the mini laptop or netbook designs, but feels better constructed than many others. The small keyboard and 8.9in display mean this is laptop is probably best reserved for mobile work, but we had no problems using this as we would other Windows laptops.

Whatever you think about Dell, one thing’s for sure – it’s the first laptop manufacturer to realise that an ‘internet anywhere’ netbook isn’t much use without internet access. Wi-Fi is all well and good, but step out of network range with your little, low-cost laptop and it’s close to becoming dead weight.
Dell comes close to making the Inspiron Mini 9 the perfect netbook, but by limiting the 3G option to a crippled Vodafone-only model, it just misses the mark.

So, what's the verdict? Well, with netbooks designed to surf the Internet, including the 3G SIM in the unit is a logical one. Yes, you will have to pay a premium for the inclusion of the SIM over the 2-year contract, but at least you get the feeling that this is going to last you 2 years rather than the 10 minutes you get with the Asus Eee offering. As a netbook offering, the only criticism is that the SSD just isn't really big enough. While you'll gain space in your bag by not having to carry around a dongle, that space is likely to be taken up with a portable hard drive.

There's no escape from the netbook. Asus' ever-expanding range of Eees may have led the way, but with MSI and Acer following swiftly after, and big names such as Fujitsu-Siemens, Samsung, Toshiba and now Dell touting their latest and lightest at every opportunity, it's abundantly clear it's a phenomenon that is here to stay. It's come to us courtesy of Vodafone.
Dell's long-awaited netbook has much to recommend it, but it's far from perfect.

Dell is a fairly late entry into the netbook market, but the Dell Inspiron Mini 9 has some very strong qualities to it. For one, it is the first netbook to go completely fanless meaning that it has silent operation. It also features a user accessible panel at the bottom making it easy for both Dell and consumers to easily upgrade or modify its features. Still, Dell could have improved the design some to really set it apart. The lack of function keys can be problematic as is the battery that while better than many 3-cells in competing units is still smaller than 6-cells offered by many others.

The netbook category of laptops didn’t even exist until about a year ago, but it’s already grown surprisingly cutthroat. Major manufacturers don’t want to be cut out of the action that companies like Acer (with its Aspire One, MSI (with the Wind U100, and especially Asus (with, among many other variants, the EeePC 1000H) are currently dominating.
Dell’s sensibly priced Inspiron Mini 9 has something to offer anyone looking for a light, bright netbook—except a good keyboard.

Dell Inspiron Mini 9 Review

Dell wants you to believe the Inspiron Mini 9 is "your new best friend." Well, kiddies, the Mini 9 is a fantastic mobile companion that helps you stay connected and makes your life easier without breaking the bank. However, I can't shake the feeling that the Mini 9 is more like "the kid you're friendly with at the lunch table, but isn't your BFF." Yes, the Mini 9 is a great netbook. Yes, it has a great price. Yes, it will probably sell very, very well for Dell. No, this won't change the world as you know it. The truth is that at least a dozen other manufacturers have released or announced similar netbooks before the new Inspiron Mini 9 arrived. Dell had all the time in the world to develop something that slaughters the competition in a way that only Dell can.

Dell has crafted a solid mini-laptop that's good for kids and has plenty to offer anyone looking for an on-the-go system. The Dell Inspiron Mini 9 isn't perfect, but it does offer a terrific design and a good price. Dell's first venture into the world of mini-notebooks has produced a worthy competitor.

Dell’s entrance into the mini-notebook market is bound to make the competition take notice. The Linux version of the Inspiron Mini 9 boasts the most consumer-friendly interface we have seen, its footprint is tiny but sturdy, and it gets more than three hours of battery life. The Linux version of the Acer Aspire one is $70 cheaper than our $399 configuration, has a bigger 8GB solid state drive, and a more ergonomic keyboard, but it lasts 1 hour and 14 minutes less on a charge and its Linux interface isn’t as polished. Despite its inferior keyboard, we recommend the Dell Inspiron Mini 9 over the Aspire one for those users interested in Linux. Spending the extra cash for this system is worth it for those seeking a small yet solidly built mini-notebook, and for those who want the ability to configure their system online.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 950: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 is an integrated (onboard) graphic chip on Mobile Intel 945GM chipset. It is a faster clocked version of the GMA 900 and supports no hardware T&L (Transform & Lightning) accelleration (which is required for some games).
Only older games can be played fluently with these graphics chips (if they were not too demanding). Shared memory graphic cores in this category got the advantage of less heat production and longer battery runtimes. For office, internet, image processing, and video editing tasks these graphics chips are still useable without any restrictions.

8.9": The notebook has a very small and rare Display format for Subnotebooks. There hardly exist any smaller displays and this format is rare.
The advantage is, that the subnotebook can be small dimensioned and can be carried easily. Further the tiny display has the advantage, that it needs few current, which improves the battery runtime and in consequence the mobility. The disadvantage is that the reading of texts is very exhausting vor the eyes. High resolutions can hardly be used.
>> To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.
1.05 kg: This subnotebook is one of the most lightweight of all notebooks and can be carried very easily. There exist hardly any models in this extreme class of weight. 7-9 inch displays are normal for this class of weight.
Dell: Dell is one of the biggest international manufacturers according market shares and the number of notebook models, which are reviewed in German and English speaking countries. Some of these reviewed laptops achieve top positions according total rating and price/value relation.
79.24%: This rating is not convincing. It must be considered, that there exist hardly any laptops, which receive a rating below 60%. This notebook is evaluated below average, this is not really a recommendation for purchase.
