Reviews for the Dell Inspiron 6400

The Dell Inspiron 6400 although clearly not too inspiring with its plain Jane looks, managed to deliver a generally good performance rating with its Intel Core 2 Duo processor and maintained a favorable power consumption level. Graphics wise, the Inspiron 6400 held it own with its ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 embedded solution, which brings about a great balance between performance and battery life for its class. Those that have the habit of playing the latest graphic intensive games would be a little disappointed though, as there are no upgrades to the Inspiron 6400 available that allows anything much more powerful to fit into its chassis. Nevertheless, the Mobility Radeon X1400 is a capable mainstream GPU.

With a base price - for the T7200 Core 2 Duo - of £789 inc. VAT and shipping, the Inspiron 6400 is an excellent and affordable route into the Core 2 Duo world. It has all the credentials to be a dependable multimedia companion with its great screen, comprehensive connectivity and decent processing power. But be aware it's neither exciting to look at nor to game on.

The Dell Inspiron 6400 is a very good notebook with decent options at a reasonable price. The Core Duo 1.86 is perfect for multitasking. Gaming on the 6400 with the x1400 should be fine for the occasional gamer, not for hardcore gamers. The lowest option for the screen was impressive, which means higher options should be excellent. Battery life is decent, but could be better. I may be looking into buying a spare battery soon. The layout of the keyboard is perfect for typing and should fit your lifestyle. Overall, I recommend this notebook for anyone looking for a great performing laptop for a reasonable price.

If the idea of a desktop replacement machine that truly has five hours of battery life watching DVD’s interests you then this could well be for you. Yes 3 DVD’s in a row. While watching three DVD's in a row may not be what everyone wants - or needs - running a DVD tends to put a fair amount of stress on a laptop battery and often it's a struggle to get one DVD watched but I managed three on a Sunday afternoon, I had only intended two as that would surely drain the battery but it still had 38% left after the second and while it was down to single digits by the time the third was finished it did it and the total running time was 299 minutes so with the DVD swaps it's over five hours.

If you need a dual-core notebook on a budget the Inspiron 6400 is the best choice we've seen yet, although we'd be tempted to upgrade the optical drive and hard disk. We test a huge selection of Centrino Duo notebooks costing £850 and above in this month's Labs, but the Dell Inspiron 6400 sneaks well under the radar: at £629, it's the cheapest Centrino Duo notebook we've seen. And that's despite a 2GHz T2500 Core processor and a 16:10 widescreen with a 1,680 x 1,050 resolution.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 950: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 is an integrated (onboard) graphic chip on Mobile Intel 945GM chipset. It is a faster clocked version of the GMA 900 and supports no hardware T&L (Transform & Lightning) accelleration (which is required for some games).
These graphics cards are not suited for Windows 3D games. Office and Internet surfing however is possible.

Intel Core Duo: Double Core processor with a very good relation of performance to current consumption. The 2 MB L2 Cache are used together by the double. The maximum capacity of 31 watts is only 4 watts more than with the Pentium M (predecessor). Both cores are lowered automatically and independently of each other by speed steps down to 1 GHz. In addition it now supports also SSE3 instructions. At least it is just as fast as a equivalent Pentium M. With applications, which were designed for multi-processors, the performance can be nearly twice as fast as with the Pentium M (e.g. CineBench around 86% fast)

15-inch display variants are the standard and are used for more than half of all laptops.
The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, often allows high resolutions and thus offers rich details on the screen, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact - simply the standard compromise.
» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.2.9 kg:
With this weight, a laptop is rather heavier than average. Devices in this range shine more with screen size and performance than with mobility.
