Dell Inspiron 17 5000 Series

Dell Inspiron 17 5770-0364

The Dell Inspiron 17 5000 is a nice-looking desktop-replacement laptop that offers good productivity performance and decent battery life for a very affordable price. Dell’s Inspiron series used to aim at entry-level users who do not run resource-hungry applications, but the new Dell Inspiron aims to succeed with powerful and high-quality components. The notebook's lid is made of gunmetal-gray plastic with the Dell logo in silver. Lifting the lid reveals a 17.3-inch, 1920 × 1080 display surrounded by a thick bezel, an island-style keyboard, and a silver, plastic deck. At 6 pounds and 16.7 x 11 x 1 inches, the Inspiron is both larger and lighter than the competition. For example, the Dell Inspiron 17 7000 2-in-1 weighs 6.2 pounds and measures 16.2 x 10.9 x 0.9 inches. With its 1.2 millimeters of travel (1.5 to 2 mm is typical) and 74 grams of force required to press, the keyboard feels shallow. However, the 4.1 x 3.1-inch touchpad is nice and spacious and responds to Windows-10 gestures. A user can tap with three fingers to activate Cortana and swipe with ease with three fingers to show all open programs. The Inspiron 17 5000 appears to have a familiar Full-HD (1920 × 1080) IPS panel. As a result, the display has excellent viewing angles. It covers 94% of the sRGB color gamut, thus colors will appear vivid and vibrant. The display guarantees a pleasant multimedia experience thanks to the decent maximum brightness, wide sRGB coverage, high contrast ratio, and wide viewing angles.

As for the performance, the Dell Inspiron 17 5000 is equipped with an Intel Core i7-8550U, which is part of the new 8th-generation Kaby Lake Refresh family. With the latest alteration to the ULV (ultra-low voltage) processors, Intel doubles the core count from 2 to 4 and retains the so-called Hyper-Threading technology, keeping the same 14nm manufacturing process and the same 15W TDP. The chip also incorporates a newer Intel Gen-9.5 integrated graphics card called Intel UHD Graphics 620. For graphics, the laptop has an AMD Radeon 530, which is made for entry-level notebooks and can be used for general multimedia and light gaming. The memory setup consists of 4 GB of GDDR5 memory clocked at 2250 MHz that is connected to the graphics processor using a 64-bit interface. For storage, it has a 1TB HDD and a 128GB SSD. The RAM installed in this laptop consists of 8 GB of DDR4 at 2400 MHz. Due to the limited 3-cell, 42Wh charge and rather demanding Full-HD 17.3-inch IPS display, the battery life is definitely not the best. Still, it should get users at least a couple of hours away from the plug. On the left side of the laptop, users will find the power jack, Ethernet, HDMI output, a pair of USB-3.0 ports and a headphone jack. On the right side are a DVD drive, a USB-2.0 port, an SD-card reader, and a Noble lock slot.

Dell's Inspiron 17 gets some needed improvements thanks to the new Intel Core i5 processor that helps boost overall performance compared to the previous generations Core 2 Duo offers. The addition of an optional TouchScreen display is also welcome for those willing to pay for the upgrade. The problem with the Inspiron 17 though is the graphics and display. Relying on the integrated graphics means that system is not capable of 3D gaming and the panel uses a below average resolution for a 17-inch display.

The Dell Inspiron 17R-1695MRB is a great option if you're looking for a lot of screen real estate to multitask and some multimedia options. However, if you can spare $200, I'd bump up your purchase to the HP Pavilion dv7-4183cl, the Editors' Choice for desktop replacement laptops. It has Blu-ray and a discrete graphics chip if you're looking to do some light gaming. If you're willing to downgrade to a 15.6-inch screen and a slower processor, then the Samsung R580-JBB2, complete with WiMax, WiDi, and Blu-ray is an excellent option.

A 17in laptop certainly won't suit everyone, particularly with such uninspiring battery life, but if portability isn't one of your main priorities, we can thoroughly recommend the Dell Inspiron 17R as a larger option. It's well built, has a good screen, excellent speakers and a fair bit of gaming muscle, which for £479 makes it a bargain.

It's not much of a surprise that media centers with top-flight components, like the Editors' Choice HP Pavilion dv7-6143cl and the Dell XPS 17, outperform the Dell Inspiron i17R-6434DBK across the board. What is a surprise is how well the i17R-6434DBK manages to hold its own against them. After all, it may not be packing the hardware of those elite systems, but it costs $250 less than the HP dv7-6143cl and less than half the price of the Dell XPS 17. For anyone looking to buy a great all around computer, the Dell Inspiron HP Pavilion i17R-6434DBK gives them everything they need for work and play, and does it at a price most computer shoppers can afford.

The Dell Inspiron 17R (I17RN-3530DBK) delivers solid performance, thanks to its Core i7 CPU and a generous helping of DDR3 RAM. While it doesn’t blow the competition away it holds its own with other similarly priced and similarly configured desktop replacements. But a higher-resolution display would be a welcome upgrade, as would a Blu-ray player. An hour or two more of battery life would sweeten the deal. If you want a bit more graphics muscle, fuller sounding audio, and a durable metallic finish, the HP dv7-6143cl is the way to go, though it’ll cost you $120 more.

The Dell Inspiron 17-3721 is a great choice for many budget-minded users, especially those who want a much bigger screen than they can find on any standalone tablet. It has an attractive $450 price tag, and you don’t have to give up any performance for that relatively small purchase price. A large screen, good performance, nice price, and user-friendly features give the Dell Inspiron 17-3721 budget laptop a leg up on the competition.

The Inspiron 17-3721 is great budget computing for the general PC user. It's a true home and student workhorse PC for about the same price as a tablet, which makes it attractive to users who need Windows program compatibility plus a real keyboard. Sure, the Inspiron 17 doesn't have a touch screen, but for less than $450, you won' miss it. The larger screen and full-size Ethernet port make it more usable in a household with older equipment (and users) than the former EC Acer Aspire V5-571-6891. Thus, the Dell Inspiron 17-3721 is our new Editors' Choice for budget laptops.

Dell Inspiron 17-5758

The Dell Inspiron 17-5758-4753 is expected to meet the needs of consumers on a sophisticated desktop replacement. The unit comes with a nice strong and sturdy build quality and features a 17.3 inch HD+ (1600x900) Truelife display. Acers calls the color Theoretical Gray, Matte Metallic IMR. The Inspiron features a 5th generation Intel Core i7-5500U processor (4M Cache, up to 3.00 GHz), 8 GB 2 DIMM (2 x 4 GB) DDR3L 1600 Mhz, and the Intel HD Graphics 5500. The stock configuration for the storage comes with a 1 TB 5400 rpm SATA hard drive. It features 802.11ac + Bluetooth 4.0, dual band 2.4 & 5 GHz for connectivity. On the right side there are two USB 2.0 ports, a 3.5 mm headphone/microphone combo, a tray load DVD drive (reads and writes DVD/CD) and a Kensington lock slot. The left side houses the power-in, an 10/100 RJ-45 Ethernet port, HDMI 1.4a, a USB 3.0 port, and a Media Card slot (SD, SDHC, SDXC). Compared to higher-end models, the Dell Inspiron 17-5758-4753 has two differences: It lacks a touchscreen, which might not be necessary anyway, and it only uses the Intel HD Graphics 5500. However, it all depends on what do you want to use this laptop for, whether it is just for everyday tasks or also for gaming.

No more Aluminum! The predecessor had an aluminum lid, while the new Dell Inspiron 17-5758 is now mainly made of plastic. On the other hand, it features up-to-date Broadwell CPUs and a dedicated graphics card. Is this sufficient to make up for the poor connectivity?

Source: Laptop Media English Archive.org version
Keeping in mind the price range of the Inspiron 5758, we are thrilled with some of the features it offers. The design isn’t special at all and it’s subjective on top of that, but the build quality presented here is good. Our only complaint is the top lid, that bends too easily under the smallest pressure. Also, the weight is acceptable, but we don’t recommend it for frequent travelers. The interior is the part that steals the show – nifty rubberized finish along with comfortable keyboard and flawless touchpad make the user experience nothing but valuable.

Dell Inspiron 17 7779 review – if you ever need a 17-inch 2-in-1
Source: Laptop Media English Archive.org version
The Inspiron 7779 is a notebook from a category of its own. There aren’t many 2-in-1 17-inch options currently on the market so if you ever need one, the Inspiron 7779 might be your only choice. And that’s unfortunate because there are several things you need to consider and probably settle for. For instance, the cooling design is rather inefficient causing some inconsistencies with the performance and even overheating during heavy workload.

Dell Inspiron 17-5770-0357

The Dell Inspiron 17 5770-0357 is a nice-looking desktop-replacement laptop which offers good productivity performance and decent battery life for a very affordable price. As a great plus, it is based on powerful quad-core 8th Generation Intel Core processors, as opposed to previous-generation dual-core chips. The weight of the Dell Inspiron 17 is 2.8 kg, which is quite normal for a 17-inch laptop. The profile is 0.9-inch (2.29 cm) thick. The notebook's lid is made of gunmetal-gray plastic with the Dell logo in silver. Lifting the lid reveals a 17.3-inch, 1,920 x 1,080 display surrounded by a thick bezel, an island-style number pad, and a silver, plastic deck. In the center of the platinum silver-colored chassis is a full-size keyboard with numeric pad and optional backlight. The touchpad is a single-piece one, meaning it has click buttons integrated into the surface. As for hardware specification, it has an 8th generation Intel Core i5-8250U processor, 8 GB of DDR4 2400 MHz RAM, a 1 TB 5400 rpm SATA hard drive coupled with 8 GB SSD, and an Intel Graphics with shared graphics memory. The quad-core update brings a good performance boost, which is noticeable in computing-intensive tasks like music and video production or photography editing. As for gaming, the notebook’s Intel integrated graphics is a basic game rendering solution. A user can use it only for non-demanding games. For storage, it has the basic one, which is a standard 1-Terabyte hard disk drive. Having an FHD display resolution is a good selling point of the Dell Inspiron 15 5570. The same applies to optional touch-screen support. The optional FHD IPS screen gives superb color consistency from any angle. The 3-cell battery inside the 5770 has a medium-size capacity of 42 Wh. We have no information on battery life. Judging from the specs, you can assume at least 4 hours on a charge. For network connectivity, the smartByte technology makes gaming and streaming smooth and uninterrupted, so a user never misses a second. This network solution ensures that the most important applications get the bandwidth they need for optimal performance. Besides that, Waves MaxxAudio Pro pumps up the sound, so the user can hear everything from concerts to film scores and gaming action with rich, resonant tones. Furthermore, the laptop has stereo speakers, a 720p HD web camera, 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Ethernet LAN network connections, Bluetooth, two fast USB 3.1 ports and a slower USB 2.0 port, an HDMI video output, a combo audio microphone/headphones connector, and a 3-in-1 SD media card reader. The notebook also optionally includes a built-in DVD optical drive. As operating system Windows 10 Home is included. The laptop's size and weight might not be appealing to everyone but to those whose priority is screen size. Hands-on article by Jagadisa Rajarathnam

A multimedia device with flaws. The Inspiron 17 is based on Intel's most recent generation of processors. However, customers should pay attention to the configuration because the versatility of a multimedia device is very limited without a dedicated graphics card.

Dell Inspiron 17 5770 (Core i7-8550U, AMD Radeon 530) review – image quality is the strongest and probably the only selling point
Source: Laptop Mag English Archive.org version
The build quality isn’t exactly impressive or at least good enough to consider it over its cheaper direct competitors. Also, input devices fall short of the competition as well – the touchpad is stiff and has suboptimal gliding surface while the keyboard has that cheap feeling and short key travel. It should be noted, though, that the pleasant clicky feedback of the keyboard compensates to some extent.

Dell: Dell is a U.S. manufacturer (based in Texas) of computer hardware founded in 1984 and is one of the largest international manufacturers in terms of both market share and notebook models. Its product line includes desktops, notebooks, storage systems, monitors, servers, printers, consumer electronics and peripherals. Dell offers laptops that are suitable for various applications, such as business laptops, gaming laptops, ultra portables and workstations. Dell's business laptops from the Latitude and Precision series are an option for professional users and businesses.

In 2023, Dell had an approximate 17% market share of global PC sales, ranking #3 after Lenovo and HP.

For gaming enthusiasts, Dell's Alienware brand is for gaming notebooks.

These graphics cards are not suited for Windows 3D games. Office and Internet surfing however is possible.

ATI Radeon Xpress X1270: Built in RS690T chipset and is based on an X700 graphics core (with less pipelines). It features no dedicated graphics memory but Vista Aero support.

Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) HD Graphics: Onboard graphics card that is built in the new Arrandale CPUs (Core i3 / i5 / i7 Dual Cores). Depending on the model and Turbo Boost, the GMA HD is clocked between 166 and 766 MHz.

Intel HD Graphics 3000: Integrated graphics card in the Intel Sandy Bridge processors (Core ix-2xxx). The HD 3000 is the faster (internally GT2 called) version with 12 Execution Units (EUs).

Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.

NVIDIA GeForce GT 525M: Based on the GeForce GT 425M with slightly higher core clock speeds.

Intel HD Graphics 4000: Processor graphics card in the high end Ivy Bridge models. Offers a different clock speed in the different CPU models (ULV to desktop quad core) and therefore a different performance.

Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.

NVIDIA GeForce 920M: Renamed GeForce 825M Kepler based graphics card (GK208) with sligthly higher clock speed.

NVIDIA GeForce 940MX: Mid-range laptop graphics card based on the Maxwell architecture. Compared to the older 940M, the MX now also supports GDDR5 graphics memory and maybe slightly faster clock speeds.

NVIDIA GeForce 920MX: Upcoming (Q1 2016) entry-level graphics card with support for DDR3 (slow) and GDDR5 (fast) graphics memory.

Intel HD Graphics 620: Integrated GPU (GT2) found on some Kaby-Lake CPU models (15 W ULV series).

Intel UHD Graphics 620: Integrated GPU (GT2, 24 EUs) found on some Kaby-Lake-Refresh CPU models (15 W ULV series). Technically identical to the previous Kaby-Lake GPU called HD Graphics 620.

AMD Radeon 530: Entry class dedicated graphics card with 320 or 384 shaders (depending on the used chip) and DDR3 or GDDR5 graphics memory (both with a 64 Bit bus). Both chips are used for a few years, e.g. even starting with the Radeon 8590M (28nm GCN).

AMD Turion 64 X2: AMD Turion 64 X2 is intended to be positioned against the Intel Core Duo was presented in 17. May 2006. The current consumption is not higher than with Centrino-Duo-notebooks (TL-45 with ATI Xpress and Mobility Radeon X300). This means, that approximative the same battery runtime and fan functions can be expected (with this chipset). However, the performance was 20% below the T2300 (1.66 GHz) due to the lower L2 Cache (Core Duo has 2048 Kbyte shared L2 Cache). Nevertheless, the performance is sufficient.

TL-64:

In 65nm produced dual-core processor based on the K8 core. Compareable performance to a 2.0 GHz Core Duo CPU with 1MB Level 2 Cache (Celeron Dual Core e.g.).

Intel Core i5:

480M: The Core i5-480M has only 3 MB L3 Cache (compared to the I7-620M) and clocks between 2.66-2.9 GHz (Turbo Mode). Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (GMA HD) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.

2410M:

Dual-core processor based on the Sandy Bridge architecture with an integrated graphics card and dual-channel DDR3 memory controller. The CPU is clocked at 2.3 GHz (Turbo Boost 2.6-2.9 GHz) and the GPU at 650 (1200 MHz Turbo).

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.

2630QM: Fast Quad-core processor based on the Sandy Bridge architecture with an integrated graphics card and dual-channel DDR3 memory controller.

5500U: Broadwell-based ULV (ultra low voltage) dual-core processor for notebooks and ultrabooks. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 5500 GPU and is manufactured in 14 nm.

Intel Core i3:

3227U: Ivy-Bridge-based ULV-CPU in Q1 2013. Offers a core clock of 1.9 GHz (no Turbo Boost) and an HD 4000 GPU (350 - 1100 MHz). The TDP is rated at 17 W.

Intel Kaby Lake:

i7-7500U: Kaby-Lake based SoC with two CPU cores clocked at 2.7 to 3.5 GHz, HyperThreading and manufactured with an improved 14nm process.

i5-7200U: Kaby-Lake based SoC with two CPU cores clocked at 2.5 to 3.1 GHz, HyperThreading and manufactured with an improved 14nm process.

Intel Kaby Lake Refresh:

i5-8250U: Kaby-Lake-Refresh based low power quad-core processor. The four cores are clocked between 1.6 and 3.4 GHz (Turbo Boost) and support HyperThreading. The integrated GPU is clocked between 300 and 1,100 MHz. The SoC is manufactured in a 14nm+ FinFET process.

i5-8550U: Kaby-Lake-Refresh based low power quad-core processor. The four cores are clocked between 1.8 and 4 GHz (Turbo Boost) and support HyperThreading. The integrated GPU is clocked between 300 and 1,150 MHz. The SoC is manufactured in a 14nm+ FinFET process.

2.6 kg:

With this weight, a laptop is rather heavier than average. Devices in this range shine more with screen size and performance than with mobility.

3.5 kg:

A laptop with this weight is comparatively heavy and less designed for mobility than for use at the desk. Therefore, the devices tend to shine less with battery life than with a large screen and higher performance.

70.14%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
