Dell's Inspiron 17 gets some needed improvements thanks to the new Intel Core i5 processor that helps boost overall performance compared to the previous generations Core 2 Duo offers. The addition of an optional TouchScreen display is also welcome for those willing to pay for the upgrade. The problem with the Inspiron 17 though is the graphics and display. Relying on the integrated graphics means that system is not capable of 3D gaming and the panel uses a below average resolution for a 17-inch display.

The Dell Inspiron 17R-1695MRB is a great option if you're looking for a lot of screen real estate to multitask and some multimedia options. However, if you can spare $200, I'd bump up your purchase to the HP Pavilion dv7-4183cl, the Editors' Choice for desktop replacement laptops. It has Blu-ray and a discrete graphics chip if you're looking to do some light gaming. If you're willing to downgrade to a 15.6-inch screen and a slower processor, then the Samsung R580-JBB2, complete with WiMax, WiDi, and Blu-ray is an excellent option.

It's not much of a surprise that media centers with top-flight components, like the Editors' Choice HP Pavilion dv7-6143cl and the Dell XPS 17, outperform the Dell Inspiron i17R-6434DBK across the board. What is a surprise is how well the i17R-6434DBK manages to hold its own against them. After all, it may not be packing the hardware of those elite systems, but it costs $250 less than the HP dv7-6143cl and less than half the price of the Dell XPS 17. For anyone looking to buy a great all around computer, the Dell Inspiron HP Pavilion i17R-6434DBK gives them everything they need for work and play, and does it at a price most computer shoppers can afford.

The Dell Inspiron 17R (I17RN-3530DBK) delivers solid performance, thanks to its Core i7 CPU and a generous helping of DDR3 RAM. While it doesn’t blow the competition away it holds its own with other similarly priced and similarly configured desktop replacements. But a higher-resolution display would be a welcome upgrade, as would a Blu-ray player. An hour or two more of battery life would sweeten the deal. If you want a bit more graphics muscle, fuller sounding audio, and a durable metallic finish, the HP dv7-6143cl is the way to go, though it’ll cost you $120 more.

Based in Texas, Dell employs more than 82,700 people worldwide (2009). In 2006, Dell purchased the computer hardware manufacturer Alienware. In most countries, the laptops are directly sold to consumers by Dell and each notebook custom-assembled according to a selection of options. Market share regarding sales of personal computers in 2007 (market research IDC): HP 18.9 %, Dell 16.4 %, Acer 9.9 %, Lenovo 7.5 %, Apple 5.7 %
ATI Radeon Xpress X1270: Built in RS690T chipset and is based on an X700 graphics core (with less pipelines). It features no dedicated graphics memory but Vista Aero support.
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) HD Graphics: Onboard graphics card that is built in the new Arrandale CPUs (Core i3 / i5 / i7 Dual Cores). Depending on the model and Turbo Boost, the GMA HD is clocked between 166 and 766 MHz.
Intel HD Graphics 3000: 3 upcoming (Q1 2011) integrated graphics card in the Intel Sandy Bridge processors (Core ix-2xxx). The 3000 / 200 is the faster internally GT2 called version with 12 Execution Units (EUs).
NVIDIA GeForce GT 525M: Based on the GeForce GT 425M with slightly higher core clock speeds.

AMD Turion 64 X2: AMD Turion 64 X2 is intended to be positioned against the Intel Core Duo was presented in 17. May 2006. The current consumption is not higher than with Centrino-Duo-notebooks (TL-45 with ATI Xpress and Mobility Radeon X300). This means, that approximative the same battery runtime and fan functions can be expected (with this chipset). However, the performance was 20% below the T2300 (1.66 GHz) due to the lower L2 Cache (Core Duo has 2048 Kbyte shared L2 Cache). Nevertheless, the performance is sufficient.
TL-64:
In 65nm produced dual-core processor based on the K8 core. Compareable performance to a 2.0 GHz Core Duo CPU with 1MB Level 2 Cache (Celeron Dual Core e.g.).
Intel Core i5:
480M: The Core i5-480M has only 3 MB L3 Cache (compared to the I7-620M) and clocks between 2.66-2.9 GHz (Turbo Mode). Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (GMA HD) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.
2410M:
Dual-core processor based on the Sandy Bridge architecture with an integrated graphics card and dual-channel DDR3 memory controller. The CPU is clocked at 2.3 GHz (Turbo Boost 2.6-2.9 GHz) and the GPU at 650 (1200 MHz Turbo).
Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
2630QM: Fast Quad-core processor based on the Sandy Bridge architecture with an integrated graphics card and dual-channel DDR3 memory controller.
17.1: Meanwhile the 17 inch display size is a more frequently offered standard format for desktop-replacements. The DTR-laptops can't be carried easily, need much energy but on the other side texts can be read easily and high resolutions are no problem. DTR mainly are intended for stationary usage on desks, where the weight and the energy need are unimportant.
