For those looking for a small laptop at a good price, there are few that offer as much as the Dell Inspiron 14. It packs a lot of power in its standard configuration but we believe that most consumers will find some upgrades preferable to the base unit. Dell’s web site is particularly good at allowing the consumer to have the computer built to individual specifications and keeps a running tally of what effect changes have on the unit’s price. Dell’s customer service and warranty plans are plusses for making this choice.

Dell's Inspiron 14 is their middle sized budget laptop system with a 14-inch screen to help keep its size down. While the pricing can be very attractive, Dell made a few interesting choices when it comes to the system to keep the prices low. Of course, Dell offers a wide range of upgrades on custom orders but these will quickly add to the price and can push the systems cost well past many similarly equipped laptops. The system is functional but best serves those that need specific features.

While many laptop buyers will gravitate toward specialty machines--such as a tiny Netbook for travel or a massive desktop replacement for gaming or video editing--there are still plenty of people who need a traditional midsize laptop. We call these 14-, 15-, and 16-inch systems members of the "mainstream" category, and they are the workhorse backbones of the laptop biz. Dell's middle-of-the-road Inspiron 14 offers a decent low-cost mainstream Core 2 Duo package, but we would have liked better battery life and more graphics options.

The Dell Inspiron 14 is a no frills budget portable laptop. I can’t find a lot wrong with it for the price. The major complaints would be the fact there are no newer digital output ports such as HDMI, no status indicator lights other than power, the look is pretty plain and finally if you configure a Core 2 Duo processor the price quickly jumps. Positives include that the weight and size are good and you get an optical drive and media card reader that are missing from the more expensive studio 14z. If you’re considering the Dell Inspiron 14 you should also check out reviews of the HP dv4t 14-inch laptop and Dell Studio 14z 14-inch laptop.

When you look at the key components of a mainstream laptop, the Dell Inspiron 14z (Core i5) excels at every single one them, whether it is excellent battery life (over an hour more than the Asus U46E-BAL5), speed, or its feature set. All this earns this mainstream lapotp our Editors' Choice nod. Peeves like the stiff mouse buttons and port covers are small in the grand scheme of things.

At $829, the Inspiron 14z is a powerful notebook with close to all-day battery life. The aluminum chassis is sleek and sexy, especially in Fire Red, and we like the backlit keyboard. We're just not fans of the port covers or the way the laptop's touchpad handles multitouch gestures. Other than those minor issues, the Dell Inspiron 14z is a very good choice.

The Dell Inspiron 14z ($824 direct, as tested) is essentially the conservative alter-ego of the Studio 14z, as it keeps many of the features that the latter would consider antiquated, such as an integrated optical drive, a VGA-Out, and Intel's integrated graphics. The Dell Inspiron 14z faces some stiff competition from rivals such as the Acer Aspire AS4810TZ-4120 and the Asus UL80Vt-A1.

The Dell Inspiron 14z laptop makes a clear statement: you are probably a student, you want a whole lot of battery life on a Windows 7 machine, and you probably don't care much about performance. Dell has aimed the Dell Inspiron 14z squarely at users who are more concerned with flash than substance, and who consider a 7-hour battery life to be a core quality for a laptop. Students are an obvious demographic here, and they should be able to get their money's worth out of a good-looking machine that won't have them scrambling to find an outlet or leave the library.

The fact that the Inspiron 14z includes an optical drive while many CULV-equipped laptops do not provides some justification for buying this notebook. However, if performance is more important to you than battery life then the Inspiron 14z probably shouldn't be at the top of your shopping list. Still, if you want a notebook with more power than a netbook and better battery life than the average notebook then the Inspiron 14z is worth a look.

If you want much stronger performance and are willing to sacrifice an hour of endurance, the Dell Studio 14z ($749) makes a better choice. And if you demand even longer battery life and lighter weight, the ASUS UL30A ($799) is the notebook for you. What do you call a CULV laptop that doesn’t look like a CULV laptop? Meet Dell's thin and light Inspiron 1470. The Inspiron offers enough of an all-round package to make it a tempting proposition for an entry-level system or student laptop. The Dell Inspiron 14 is an affordable 14-inch notebook that delivers good performance and acceptable battery life at the expense of durability. If your child or your family is looking for a convenient laptop for general use then the Inspiron 14 can handle daily multitasking with ease. That said, if you're willing to put up with a smaller screen I'd have a hard time recommending the Inspiron 14 compared to the Alienware M11x at the same price. The fact that the Inspiron 14 includes an optical drive and a Core i3 processor helps make this laptop an attractive purchase. However, the abundance of flexible plastics and lack of special features like backlit keyboard or more advanced ports make the Inspiron 14 far more average than exceptional.

When the Dell Inspiron i1464-4382OBK ($749.98 List, ) first came on the scene, it was one of only a handful of mainstream laptops that bundled an Intel Core i3 processor while tempting performance enthusiasts with a sweet price. Now that the market is saturated with Core i3 laptops, Dell's next logical step was to drop the price. The Inspiron 1464 ($670 direct) is about $80 less than it was before, and it still has that fantastic user experience and well-rounded feature set. The only setback is that its battery capacity took a minor hit in the process, so it yielded about 3 hours instead of 3 and a half. As with our previous review, I'd recommend buying the extended battery option.

Dell's Inspiron 14R gives new life to Dell's aging Inspiron budget laptop lineup. This includes some very solid performance thanks to the new Intel Core i3 dual core mobile processors, improved durability and a more comfortable keyboard design. All of these improvements are hampered though by a display where the colors quickly wash out when viewing it off center and battery life that falls below the competition.

Overall the Inspiron 14R offers a nice improvement over the previous Inspiron 14. The design is by no means striking, but is improved. The battery life does not make this a stand out laptop, but it's good enough for most people at 4 hours. The ability to configure the Inspiron 14R to your budget and needs via Dell.com is definitely a major selling point of this laptop. While there are some great 14-inch screen competitors such as the Asus UL80vt that offers 11 hours of battery life or the Acer 4820T that offers 8 hours of battery life they're harder to customize to your exact needs. There are a lot of great options in the 14-inch screen thin-and-light laptop offering lineup right now, the Inspiron 14R is not the best but if you can find it for the right price and specs that fit your needs it's definitely going to get the job done as a student laptop.

The Dell Inspiron 14R comes in many flavors. This particular one runs a midrange ATI graphics chip, targeting 3D gamers and high-definition enthusiasts. However, the average person doesn't fall into either of these user groups, and the graphics chip tacks on unwanted heat and resulted in mediocre battery scores. For this reason, the 14R-1898MRB is the better Inspiron configuration. That, or take a look at the Asus U30Jc-1A, our Editors' Choice, for its overall prowess.

For mainstream laptop owners, the Dell Inspiron is one of the most common products on the market. Dell's next-generation Inspiron laptops have arrived, and while it doesn't reinvent the wheel, the Inspiron 14R presents a very solid package of Core i3 performance and ATI dedicated graphics for a fair price.

The $819 Dell Inspiron 14R is a good choice for students and other consumers looking for strong performance in an attractive, comfortable design. Updating a laptop with faster parts or lowering its price tag is not enough to succeed in this cutthroat market. But throw in a design makeover, and suddenly the odds are in your favor. The "R" in the Dell Inspiron 14R-1898MRB ($749 list) could stand for several things: redesign, revamp, or refreshing, as most of the major changes revolve around the new chassis. It's still a solid laptop underneath all the cosmetics, equipped with a midrange Core i3 processor, more than 4 hours of battery life, and plenty of storage.

Designs don't change as often as components and pricing when it comes to laptops, as altering the aesthetic is more intricate and costly. Dell, for instance, updates its Inspiron line every year or so, and that time has come. The Dell Inspiron 14R-1761MRB's ($749 list) new look is not going to blow you away, as the changes in hinge design, color options, and port location are subtle at best. More important, the 14R-1761MRB, available at Staples, leaves intact the Inspiron line's outstanding user experience and affordable pricing. And it doesn't hurt that a bigger battery has been included to improve life.

The Dell Inspiron 14R range starts from Rs. 33,400. Our fully-loaded config would land somewhere in the range of Rs. 40,000. Dell's very aggressive pricing is seen here, most of their models (the 14R included) have a very competitive and wallet-friendly cost. Apart from the slight bulkiness and low battery life, we had absolutely nothing to point out against the Inspiron 14R. The Dell Inspiron 14R proves that Intel's Pentium processor is still powerful enough for those who need a basic notebook for surfing the web, watching videos, and working on Excel or Word documents. Though it scored low on some benchmarks, this 14-inch laptop handled everyday computing tasks fairly well. Those who want more oomph can spend just $50 more to get a Core i3 version of this machine. Unfortunately, the battery life is pretty short for a 14-incher (unless you spring for the larger battery). If your notebook is going to remain in one place most of the time, you might prefer the 15-inch Acer Aspire 5742 ($549), which offers a larger 15-inch screen, keyboard, and better performance with comparable battery life. Extraordinary. The Inspiron 14z has an unconventional design along with a lot of interesting features. Whether or not this 14 inch notebook with a 13" format powered by an Intel Core i5 2430M could be a success, can be discovered in this review.

The Inspiron 14z lives up to its promise as an obtainable thin-and-light. It ticks off the three check-boxes that concern buyers looking for a portable laptop in this price range. It’s fast, it has good battery life, and it’s affordable. Of course, this laptop isn’t hurt by the fact that is has a great keyboard and solid design.

If you're not interested in games, the Dell Inspiron 14z is powerful enough for all your daily computing needs—even with power-hungry programs like video encoding and 3D modelling. It's a well-finished laptop with an excellent battery life and three USB ports—that's one more than Dell XPS 14z, we'll have you know!

At $749, our Core i5 equipped unit is a bit expensive, but the $599 Core i3 basic model (which still comes with a 6-cell battery, but not with the backlit keyboard) is a bargain and, if it were my money, would be the one to buy. In most situations the performance gap won’t be noticeable, and the fundamentally good battery life and pleasurable chassis remains the same. No matter what hardware you pick, however, the Dell Inspiron 14z should prove to be a solid, quick laptop that’s more than capable of handling anything besides demanding 3D games.

We've picked faults with Dell's Inspiron 14z - and hey, some faults are hard to miss - but it's worth reminding readers that the laptop does a lot of things well. Where there's good, there's bad, but the positives far outweigh the negatives, and the trackpad buttons are arguably the only real deal-breaker - we strongly recommend that you try before you buy, as their mushy responsive is very much an acquired taste.

We were hoping the Inspiron 14z was at worst the cheaper and chunkier sibling of Dell’s premium XPS 14z, but it wasn’t to be. Its partially metal finish is a cut above, its keyboard and touchpad are nice, and it offers reasonable battery life and value. However its screen is several rungs below average, its connections are awkward to access, it lacks dedicated graphics, and all told it simply offers little over its competition.

What happens when you look at the low to mid-range of consumer laptops is that these units end up with something of an identity crisis. They cheap out on certain aspects to keep the price low, but they spec up in other regards to improve performance and a level of quality. And that’s precisely what happens with the Dell Inspiron 14z.

Dell has produced a smart budget machine with the refreshed Inspiron. It's true that the laptop relies on integrated graphics, which means its power isn't everything when it comes to gaming. That said, the 14z is a good all-rounder that's well built and comes with a decent spec for the price.

Dell brings a very compact thin and light laptop that offers some solid features with the Inspiron 14z. This includes a very large hard drive and DVD burner in a very thin profile. Battery life is also one of the best among Windows based laptops. There are a number of annoyances that prevent it from being a superb 14-inch laptop though.

In some ways, the 14z feels rough around the edges: while Dell was whittling the chassis, it forgot to fine-tune the multitouch trackpad and make sure the touch buttons were easy to press. And unfortunately, the intrusive bloatware load didn't even get a makeover. Still, the 14z redeems itself with fast performance, long battery life and an improved (though hardly perfect) design.

Without a dedicated graphics card, current games are not playable, unless at medium or low resolution, so hunt around for games from a couple of years back to add an extra dimension to your mobile computing. Our standard absolute flogging battery test wiped out the 14z after an hour, but luckily moderate use – surfing the net without too much HD video, document editing, tweaking a photo or two – gave a healthy seven and a half hours, very decent for a mid-ranger.

The Dell Inspiron 14z (i14z-6677DBK) has plenty in common with its Editors' Choice predecessor, the Dell Inspiron 14z (Core i5), like the latest Core i5 processor, a larger hard drive, and slightly better performance in gaming and multimedia, but it also retains some of its flaws, like stubborn mouse buttons and a irritating port covers. It makes a strong showing in its category, but other laptops like the Sony VAIO VPC-EG16FM add features like Blu-ray and WiMAX and cost less. For the time being, the previous Dell Inspiron 14z (Core i5) remains our Editors' Choice.

The Dell Inspiron 14z isn't part of the peacock crowd that flaunt themselves with bright designs but rather offers a sleek, aluminium design packed with decent specs. The Dell Inspiron 14z offers decent performance in an attractive and sturdy aluminium body. It has a few annoyances, but it's a good choice for computing on the move.

We liked the Inspiron 14z at $829, but the $599 version is an even better choice for bargain hunters. While you give up some performance, you get an hour more of battery life in return. The aluminum chassis is stylish, and it's worth the extra $54 to spring for the Fire Red chassis and backlit keyboard. We're just not fans of the port covers or the way the laptop's touchpad handles some multitouch gestures. Other than those minor issues, the Dell Inspiron 14z is a very good value.

The Dell Inspiron 14z thins down the bulky look of the average Inspiron laptop while sacrificing none of the performance or battery life, adding up to an affordable mainstream notebook that's an excellent late consideration for back-to-school shopping. When it comes to laptops in 2011, "thinner is better" seems to be a consistent trend.

The Dell Inspiron 14z 2011 model update turns out to be a mixed bag. While it has a lot going for it in terms of interesting design, nice build quality, great blend of ports and new technologies, it also has a couple of big gotchas. The touchpad implementation is really pretty bad, making for a frustrating user experience. The amount of fan noise the N411z produced was also a major annoyance during testing. Both of those problems might be able to get resolved with some driver updates though, I literally purchased this laptop the day it came out and it tends to be the case the early adopters are the ones that get to experience the buggy drivers that are soon updated. Those cons aside, if you want a 14-inch laptop with great battery life of up to 6 hours, thin profile and quality aluminum case build, nice bright screen and a price starting just under $600 then the new Inspiron N411z update to the Inspiron 14z is an option worth considering and comparing to some other 14-inch laptops out there.

Taking into consideration all of the Inspiron 14z's features, its more than decent performance, its relatively small body (and also a smaller than usual power adapter) and its sub-2kg weight, it's a laptop that is very enticing. It's no MacBook Air, but we'd recommend it to anyone after a small and mobile laptop for everyday office, Web and multimedia tasks.

Dell: Dell Inc. is a multinational technology corporation that develops, manufactures, sells, and supports personal computers and other computer-related products. Based in Texas, Dell employs more than 82,700 people worldwide (2009). In 2006, Dell purchased the computer hardware manufacturer Alienware. In most countries, the laptops are directly sold to consumers by Dell and each notebook custom-assembled according to a selection of options. Market share regarding sales of personal computers in 2007 (market research IDC): HP 18.9 %, Dell 16.4 %, Acer 9.9 %, Lenovo 7.5 %, Apple 5.7 %
Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500MHD: Onboard (shared Memory) GPU built in the GM45, GE45 and GS45 chipset (Montevina). Because of two more shaders and a higher core clock, much faster than the old GMA X3100. Still not advisable for gamers (DirectX 10 games not playable or only with very low settings). The integrated video processor is able to help decode HD videos (AVC/VC-2/MPEG2) , e.g., for a fluent Blu-Ray playback with slow CPUs.
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500M: The graphics core of the Intel GL40 and GS40 chipset features a slower clocked GMA 4500MHD (400 versus 533 MHz). Because of the slower core speed, full Blu-Ray Logo support is not given and the gaming performance is a bit worse.
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) HD Graphics: Onboard graphics card that is built in the new Arrandale CPUs (Core i3 / i5 / i7 Dual Cores). Depending on the model and Turbo Boost, the GMA HD is clocked between 166 and 766 MHz.
Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.
Intel HD Graphics 3000: Integrated graphics card in the Intel Sandy Bridge processors (Core ix-2xxx). The HD 3000 is the faster (internally GT2 called) version with 12 Execution Units (EUs).
Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.
AMD Radeon HD 6630M: Successor of the slow clocked (low power) versions of the Mobility Radeon HD 5650 with more cores, UVD3 processor and Eyefinity+.
Intel HD Graphics 4000: Processor graphics card in the high end Ivy Bridge models. Offers a different clock speed in the different CPU models (ULV to desktop quad core) and therefore a different performance.
With these GPUs you are able to play modern and demanding games fluently at medium detail settings and HD resolution.
NVIDIA GeForce GT 640M LE: A Slower-clocked version of the GT 640M

Intel Pentium Dual Core: The return of the name Pentium, though it is a Yonah core. In fact, it is a double Core processor with a very good relation of performance to current consumption.
T4200:
Entry class dual core CPU with 1 MB level 2 cache and no virtualization technology. Compared to the Core 2 Duo line, some power saving mechanism are deactivated.
SU4100: Entry-level dual core processor for slim and light subnotebooks. Due to the Pentium name, the CPU may have less power saving features than Core 2 Duo processors.
Intel Core i3:
330M:
The Core i3-330M is a slower clocked 350M and therefore also lacks the Turbo Boost feature and clocks with max. 2.13 GHz. Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (GMA HD 3150) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.
350M:
The Core i3-350M is technically a Core i5-430M without the Turbo Boost overlocking feature. Therefore, it always clocks with max. 2.26 GHz (of course Speedstep is included). Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (GMA HD) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.
380M: The Core i3-380M is a fast clocked Core i3. The TurboBoost, AES, VTd, and Trusted Execution functions are deactivated in the i3-series. Therefore, it always clocks with max. 2.53 GHz (of course Speedstep is included). Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (GMA HD) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.
2330M:
Dual-core processor based on the Sandy Bridge architecture with an integrated graphics card and dual-channel DDR3 memory controller. The CPU is clocked at 2.2 GHz and features the Turbo Boost 2.0 only for the graphics card (650/1100MHz).
Intel Pentium:
P6100: The Pentium P6100 is an entry level CPU based on the Arrandale core. Compared to the Celeron P4600, the P6100 offers a bit better performance due to the faster System Bus and an increased Level 3 cache. However, VT-x is not available for the P6100.
Intel Core i5:
2430M: Dual-core processor based on the Sandy Bridge architecture with an integrated graphics card and dual-channel DDR3 memory controller. The CPU is clocked at 2.4 GHz (Turbo Boost 2.7-3 GHz) and the GPU at 650 (1200 MHz Turbo).
3317U: Ivy-Bridge-based ULV-CPU in Q2 2012. Offers a core clock of 1.7 - 2.6 GHz and an HD 4000 GPU (350 - 1050 MHz). The TDP is rated at 17 W.
Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
2640M: Very fast dual-core processor based on the Sandy Bridge architecture with an integrated graphics card and dual-channel DDR3 memory controller.
13.3: This is a common display format for subnotebooks. Netbooks, UMPC and some subnotebooks have tinier displays. Nevertheless, the majority of standard laptops has a higher format. The advantage of a small display is, that the subnotebook can be small dimensioned and can be carried easily. Further the small display needs few energy, which improves the battery runtime and in consequence the mobility. The disadvantage is that the reading of texts is a bit exhausting for the eyes, especially with high resolutions.
14.0: 14 inch display size is a mixture between the small formats of subnotebooks and the 15 inch standard display. The reason why so many people like displays with medium size is, that this size is not exhausting for the eyes, does not need too much energy and the laptops can be kept quite compact.
14.1: 14 inch display size is a mixture between the small formats of subnotebooks and the 15 inch standard display. The reason why so many people like displays with medium size is, that this size is not exhausting for the eyes, does not need too much energy and the laptops can be kept quite compact.
» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.
1.9 kg:
These sub-notebooks weight less than the average of all notebooks, but represent a heavier class of weight among the sub-notebooks. 12 inch displays are normal for this class of weight.
2.6 kg:
This notebook is lighter than the average of all notebooks. It is too heavy for sub-notebooks. 14 inch displays are normal for this class of weight.
72.76%: This rating is bad. Most notebooks are better rated. This is not a recommendation for purchase.
