Three days ahead of the launch of the iPad 2 in Canada, RIM is providing prospective buyers with an alternative option. The Canadian company’s first tablet is now up for pre-order from the Best Buy and Future Shop webstores.

The Blackberry PlayBook was first announced back in September of 2010 and features RIM’s own Blackberry Tablet OS. According to a couple of press releases issued today by Research In Motion, the Wi-Fi PlayBook will be available in 3 different versions and can be purchased from a wide number of retailers upon its release next month. Those retailers include AT&T, Best Buy, Office Depot, RadioShack, Staples, Sprint and Verizon in the US. On the Canadian side of the border, the tablet will also be available from Best Buy and the Best Buy owned Future Shop along with Costco, Rogers, Chapters, Sasktel, Walmart and others. However, the tablet appears to be only available for pre-order from Best Buy and Future Shop.

The Blackberry PlayBook features a 7” LCD screen with a 1024x600 pixel resolution, a 1 GHz Cortex-A9 dual-core processor, a 3MP front facing camera, a 5MP rear-facing camera, 1GB RAM and will be available in with up to 64GB of storage. According to the 2nd press release by RIM, the pricing starts at $499 for the 16GB version, $599 for the 32GB version and $699 for the 64GB model. The prices are the same in Canada, but in Canadian Dollars, and the tablet should ship in both countries on April 19th
